Pretty much all the vanilla maps/areas are gone. As far as I could tell when I played it after beyond light launched (didn't buy the expac), you kind of need to buy the expansions to get into it? I could be wrong. I believe you can still play for free (I have Forsaken & Shadowkeep) but not sure what content you actually have access to apart from 1-2 maps to explore.
I'm lucky I didn't spend more than $20-30 on the expacs lol Don't see a reason to.
Actually just googled it to be sure, this reddit post covers a bit about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/gzrjxu/remo… so basically you can play the game for free but you get next to no content.
Yup if you've never played it before it's probably not bad for the 10-20 hours of freeplay you will get.
But all the cool exotics and bosses and big content is locked behind paywalls. But at least as a new player you won't have half your inventory 'sunset' like long time players did.
I loved the story and feel like I got good value from it, but won't be playing anymore. The new classes broke PvP beyond reason, and losing all the weapons you spent days/weeks farming for is just a bad choice.
I think the Steam review ratio speaks for itself

Very Negative (68 reviews)Yeah I didn't mind it too much. It doesn't help that I bought the game cause of a miss click, so I was already salty from the get go. But it was slowly growing on me. I was never gonna spend money on it other than expansions on sale but the way Bungie has gone about it in the last few years has pretty much put me off. I'll probably finish the story in Shadowkeep & maybe some of the quests if I can do them but after that I'm just uninstalling it.
If this is a paid version then what's in the free version?
Hardly anything.
Just an endless treadmill. I enjoyed my many many hours into Destiny 1 and 2, but be prepared for your hard work to become useless as they bring more expansions out. But I guess that's the nature of these games. Bungie at every turn will screw you though.
I enjoyed Destiny 1 but something told me not to get into D2 and I'm glad I ignored it.
So is this the new edition?
This is all 3 expansions
There is also a paid DLC element to D2 in the form of four seasons a year which introduce new content. This edition gives you access to the current season but you will have to purchase any after that.
My understanding is that most past content has been removed or made redundant by the latest expansion. Additionally 'sunsetting' means any loot you get will inevitably become redundant.
