Berliner Weisse beers are exxy…
Yes but if you extrapolate that price out into a 24 pack, it comes to $127 which is more expensive than any 24 pack of sour beer available at Dan's.
Two Birds isn't exactly some niche craft brewery either.
Having said that, god bless them for using 375ml cans.
Hence the beauty of homebrew. I put down a 17L Berliner Weisse fresh wort kit for the princely sum of $59 which included the Lallemand Yeast.
Its exceptionally tasty and if you start experimenting by adding fruit during the ferment you can come up with some awesome variations for nowhere near as much as commercials charge.
Now of course all the naysayers will comment on how much it costs to purchase all the kit and therefore homebrew isn't all that viable or beneficial. Fair point………but you can pick up a lot of kit second hand, it doesn't need to be all singing and dancing and there are some very inventive people re-purposing existing items with success. Once you have it then the economies of scale begin to shine through.
@jollster101: I love this style of beer and I'd like to give home brewing a try. Is this a difficult style for a beginner?
@GirlFriday: It depends. I didn't brew the entire batch from scratch with grains etc which makes it a lot easier. My local homebrew shop sells what are known as Fresh Wort Kits and they do all of the hard work of taking the grains, malts, hops, water etc and then doing the magic that turns it into something resembling beer or lager. (This is the link to the Berliner Weisse they do - https://www.grainandgrape.com.au/products/category/DGGKTHHG-…)
So I buy one of these kits which is basically a cube that contains ~17L or wort. I take that home with a sachet of recommended yeast which I also buy from them and then pop that into my fermenting vessel (having made sure that it, and everything involved in the transfer, has been sanitised). Then keep the fermenting wort at the right temp for the yeast (in this case around 18-20C) and let the yeast do their thing until they have digested all the sugars within the liquid and turned it into alcohol.
Then you need to worry about bottling (or kegs which is what I use).
None of it is really difficult, it's just a bit daunting at the start. If you can ensure good hygiene and sanitisation as well as temp control then you have a good chance of making decent beer…..especially when using FWK's.
@jollster101: Very succinct explanation!
@HomebrewFC: Thanks.
@GirlFriday: Have a look at this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICY9j1cV_Ek&t=93s
The home brew shop I use has a number of videos online and the one above relates to the use of FWK's. It gives you an idea at the end of the day.
16pk cartons. Pfft.
the 16 pack carton turned me off, even for the discounted price.
Is it cherry berry? What is Hop XPA. Or maybe this is bikes? Cool descriptions.
I have for sale CdU GPIL, updatet version, don't ask me what is it, I bought it thanks for OZB. Just $85.
Downvoted because I don't know what is XPA. Or upsets that you have no idea what it is CdU GPIL? Covid or beer affected?
New vaccine soon will help you mate. Just be patient.
Ordered the XPA off this deal yesterday. Tried a Black Hops limited release with Eclipse hops that was great
