  • Noob question (I've tried googling but have not been able to find a definitive answer):

Any idea if the upscaling applies to FTA tv? I understand that it's not possible to run an antenna cable through the shield, but is it possible to download freeview/freeviewplus or other FTA tv channel apps from the play store and then have that content upscaled? I recently bought a hisense q8 for my parents who mostly watch FTA tv and the quality of most of the FTA channels is not great. The HD channels look ok, but the non-HD channels look quite poor - worse than how it looked on their old full-hd samsung plasma. I get that the source is quite poor for most of the non-hd FTA channels, just wondering if there is any way to get "clear" FTA/live tv on newer 4k TV's and if anyone else has had this issue? Some forum posts seem to indicate that even high end 4k TV's like the LG C9 have this same issue with FTA content in Australia being such low quality. Wondering if I just have to tell them not to watch non-HD FTA channels? Thanks in advance

It will upscale the catch-up app content, however, that's quite an inconvoluted way to watch live channels.

A better way is to install the Australian live channels on the "Google Live Channel App" using these instructions… https://www.matthuisman.nz/2019/01/live-au-iptv-channels-on-…

The maximum resolution of most content is only 720p though, but that is often higher (resolution and quality) than FTA. The Shield upscaling will sharpen this content further.

You don't need a shield to install the channels via this method, I'd recommend you test it on your built-in Android TV first.

      • Thank you so much for the response and info!

The Q8 runs on the vidaa platform which is really not great, so I will be getting a device to plug into it anyway in order to use android/google tv and the related apps (wish Hisense sold their higher end QLEDs with android built-in!).

So my decision on whether to go for a cheaper option (e.g. chromecast with google tv or foxtel now box) vs the nvidia shield really hinges on the shield's ability to upscale and whether it is really as good as people say and whether it will apply to FTA/live content. With about $200 difference in prices, and the fact that the gaming capabilities and plex server capabilities will likely not be used…the upscaling seems to be the only differentiating factor…much to think about - THANKS AGAIN FOR THE REPSONSE, VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!
