Are there any websites that offer free sms to send and receive? I need one that actually has a physical mobile number as I want to use that onto social media apps without compromising my own as it needs to verify the actual number .

Refuse to use apps or deal with businesses that require a mobile number.
It's hard, yes, because so many just assume that a) you have a mobile and b) you want to share that with them.
Also lobby your MP because many government services assume you're willing to hand them a mobile number, too.
You can't authenticate to a service with a mobile number when overseas so use of mobiles for that purpose geographically restrict your use of that service.
People hand over their mobile number far too willingly.

So, no Google (incl Youtube, Android account, etc), no Microsoft (Outlook/Hotmail, Office365), not sure about social media (I can actually live without them)….
A lot of those like many, once signed up, you can then login and remove your mobile number. It's sites that don't allow this is what I dislike and tend to avoid.
You can use Clickatell to send sms for free, you just "test" it. Testing just means you can only send a message to one number and can't bulk send out messages (which would cost money).
Personally I got a new number as I was getting sick of spam and continue to use my original number in websites (I put the sim in an old phone)
It's easier just to not be a troll then try to hide your identity …
Alternatively just buy a cheap second sim?
