PSA: Down Under Host Webhosting Closure

Down Under Host are shutting down as of 10th Feb 2021 with services switching off by 10th Feb 2022 and suggestion to transition to 'Dream IT Host'.

Many people took up their $8-9 per year hosting packages and makes you question the fallacy of such cheap hosting providers. Maybe. Anyway, heads up on below and good opportunity to backup/migrate your data today.

Hi

It is crucial you read the entirety of this email as it will affect your website and domain services with us.

For the past 24 months, Down Under Host has provided Web Hosting and Domain services to Australian residents at an extremely affordable rate. Our team comprised 3 part-time employees, with an extremely tight profit margin. Over the past year, like many other businesses, COVID-19 has forced us to downsize to 1 part-time employee.

As a business did not want to fall into the trap of increasing our already extremely low prices for the benefit of an extra support member (we would be looking at an increase of almost 300% per hosting package).

On the other side of the fence, we spend the majority of our time on support tickets and provisioning services, this may seem like a positive, however, as a business we have aspirations for additional services to improve our offerings to our customers and the future of Down Under Host.

Luckily for us, we have created great relationships with our suppliers which has allowed us to keep our prices low and performance high.

With this in mind, we have had to re-evaluate our position as a business and determine the future of Down Under Host.

After much consideration and communication with our suppliers, Down Under Host will cease trading effective the 10th of February.

All services with us will continue to operate until the 10th of February 2022. However, no technical support will be offered for this time.

What now? One of our suppliers, Dream IT Host has been with us since we started almost 2 years ago and has overlooked our services on a technical level. We have granted Dream IT Host full access to our services and they have ensured a seamless transition to their services. Dream IT offers an almost identical solution as Down Under Host, except they have a lot more staff and provide more services.

To migrate your services to Dream IT Host, please use the below URL, this will allow the staff to correctly associate your service with us: https://my.dreamithost.com.au. Once signed up, please submit a support ticket with your website URL and they will migrate your website across seamlessly. Same applies to domain names.

Please remember your services will operate until your next billing date, however you will not be able to renew. All Down Under Host services will terminate on the 10th of February 2022.

Our Terms of Service and still enforced and are legally binding.

We thank you for your trust and support over the past 2 years and wish ALL our customers the best for the future.

Thanks,

Dylan and the DUH Team.

  • Interesting the Rep was last online yesterday…

  • I've been using Smallweb's Melbourne services and they're good: https://smallweb.net/order/main/packages/budget/?group_id=49

Hosted at FlowVPS as far as I know.

  • Anyone done the research into alternative cheap providers?
The parents have a static .com.au web page (just a picture) plus an email address, lite usage.
    $8 annual was perfect.
Looking at OzB deals with in web hosting category looks like they will be up for $40/year :(

Smallweb above (2GBP = ~$3.60 AUD/year) in Melbourne, or can another option is lifetime hosting in LA or Germany for 10 Euro (= ~$15AUD) at MyW (see: https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/169180/2021-lifetime-o… ) .

I've been using both providers for just under two years now (MyW in LA), no problems whatsoever.

I've also got a service in Singapore from this mob https://talk.lowendspirit.com/discussion/2521/webhorizon-sin… - they are 3USD = ~$4AUD a year however I've only had it a few months so can't comment on long-term reliability, but it's been fine so far.

2GBP says 'Email Disabled', but I guess I can stretch to 3GBP plan.

        • Bugger, sorry about that, I had email enabled when I got mine.

      • Just to clarify, for the MyW lifetime offers, it's 10 Euro annually?

      Yup.

For a.au domain name I would recommend moving it to Zuver good pricing and includes everything that people would need. For the static website I would just pop it up on Netlify for free.

The final bit the email part is going to be the difficult one without knowing what they actually require. How many addresses? Sounds like one. No additional forwards? and how much server storage do they need for email.

And to be honest depending on how much time you've got left on your contract you might be able to actually get away with leaving it there until they actually switch the servers off on "10th of February 2022" and just have a backup plan for a quick switch over.

From the above message it sounds like Dream IT Is now in control of the service if it's not already on their infrastructure anyway. It wouldn't surprise me if Down Under Host Was one of Dream IT WHM Multisite reseller clients already anyway.
