Looking to Get Bulk (15 - 20) Numbers of The Enchiridion by Epictetus

I'm looking to get some copies of the ancient Stoic text to share around amongst a team of young men I am coaching in basketball.

The Dover Thrift edition is under $6 depending on where you look, but shipping prices kill the deal and quantity available (even on Amazon) is very limited.

I understand that the book and some of its translations are quite old and may fall under public domain. I have downloaded a free PDF of the text which was from Project Gutenberg (source: https://amp.reddit.com/r/Stoicism/comments/9pfwul/epictetus_…)

Is there a way to cheaply print this PDF at a print shop (I don't own a printer) and if so, would it be technically legal if I intend on giving the copies away? The PDF is 69 pages long and all the websites I'm finding don't list costs for such things so I'm not sure if it would end up being more expensive than other available copies such as the Dover Thrift edition.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

all the websites I'm finding don't list costs

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/resources/pdfs/guides/print-a…

    • My closest OfficeWorks is around a 40 minute drive away which is why it wasn't my first option. Also I don't quite understand the costs there. If each page ends up costing 8c, it almost makes it as expensive as the official Dover Thrift edition, only without the Fragments.

If I were to theoretically print this booklet double-sided, in B&W and on A5 size pages, how would I work out the price? Or would I have to ask Officeworks directly?

      • Give them a call, they will be able to quote you.

This is pretty heavy stuff.. How old are your athletes?

    • 17-19

It's more the main principles. Stuff like the dichotomy of control, judgements of events and accepting things as they are.

The idea is that they will gradually learn to not be as frustrated with common mistakes. Just an idea at this point that may be viable with a cheap copy of a book they may find useful as they get a but older

$5.75 each and free shipping for orders over $60, which you will meet.

Alternatively, download free version and email to them. All young men will have at least one device to read it on, right?

    • Theoretically yes. I found that link this morning, but unsure about the time and actual quantities they have on hand. Will check Officeworks prices then may resort to this method anyway.

How old are they? Honestly I reckon most people will need to be a little bit past the young teen years before they really appreciate stoicism.

It's easy to relate to once you're into your thirties and a bit more sure of yourself and your outlook is long-term, teens are still stuck in the years where they're trying to prove themselves and chasing instant gratification.

    Cant hurt though.

17-19 year Olds. I've taught some stoic ideas for the last season or 2 with this group. Mainly the dichotomy of control and trying to lessen the negative connotations of mistakes and "failure" as they inevitably occur.

👍 can't help with the book, but well done.

  • I just googled the book and found this summary on youtube TOP LESSONS FROM THE ENCHIRIDION, BY EPICTETUS - maybe have your basketball team watch this.

You then go through some of the items in the context of basketball. Having them read the book first might be too heavy and deep to start with (if they don't fall asleep reading it - I've only seen this for first time, but I would imagine it's not some easily grasped).

I think you want to team to practice and embody those lessons - have them openly speak their minds and see how you can influence them as a coaching.

    • That's also a good idea. Might go with this to start with and then consider the books at a later time
