Issues with Ryobi Chargers and Batteries

Is it just me that I keep having issues with Ryobi chargers lately?

I've been buying ryobi cordless tools since they were still blue colour.

So far I counted already 4 chargers went kaput without any good explanation.

Also some of my batteries can never fully charge, only 3 bars full.

I know about 4+2 years warranty but that's not my point.

Tools are great, but I am VERY disappointed with their batteries and charger.

  • Obviously I can only share my experience, but I've also been using their gear since they were blue and yellow. I've only had ONE battery pack fail, it was a NiCd that no longer held a usable charge. Both of my chargers are still in good nick and my 2 lithium batteries are still fighting fit.

  • I have two OEM 2.5mah batteries. One failed and doesn't hold charge at all. The other is going strong. I paid $45 for a 6mah knock off and it's been rock solid. The OEM charger has been fine. There is only 1 year warranty on batteries. The 4+2 year warranty is on the tools themselves I believe.

I have discovered (via google, as you do) that some people found a particular Ryobi One charger model ( BCL14181H) was prone to failure, even though I’ve had no troubles with it. Perhaps a particular production run.

    • Yes I had 2 of these failed. Upon opening one, the controller chip cracked just like people said

  • All my charger issues were fast chargers. I even bought new kit 2 years ago year and the charger was DOA.

I always buy from Bunnings, never 3rd party.

These questionable quality issues are bad enough to abandon Ryobi and find different brand.

Of course everyone's experience vary hence I want to know

I work in a returns position at Bunnings and I can honestly say that it is not a common occurrence for Ryobi batteries and chargers to be returned.

  • I run both Ryobi and Makita tools. I've had in the past ~10 years around 8-10 batteries of each brand. Have had 2 Ryobi batteries not hold their charge but due to age would have thought that to be normal. Well outside of the warranty period. Makita ones have all held up though. Of the 20 or so Ryobi skins I've run only had one fail - a line trimmer where the plastic holder for the line has failed. Other than that all the motors have been rock solid.

  • 4 chargers in how many years?

I also have had Ryobi (both the blue and green versions) and haven’t had any issues with batteries or chargers other than what you would expect for age (with the original blue drill and battery I had)

Is it possible you have an issue with your wiring at home and that’s what’s frying your chargers?

    • 4 chargers issue in last 10 years or so

Not very often but shouldn't just happened either

  • Had one battery that just went dead a year or so ago. Was probably about 1 or 2 years old.
Charged it a few days prior with no issue, went to use it and nothing. Charger wouldn't recognize it….Not sure what the issue was but was replaced fine.

  • I'm trying to repair a failed BCL14181H charger.

On inspection a burnt copper track was obvious, but now why? So far found one of a pair of power schottky diodes has converted itself to a 2 watt 1.3 ohm resistor, so now I have another why.

Still investigating…. but I didn't know the failure rate would be high for these chargers.

  • a bit late but I've had one charger and one 1.5mah battery fail, not sure model number but its around 2013. Made me want to switch brands but I got a second hand charger for the time being
