What Credit Cards Are Worth Switching to if Not Focused on Frequent Flyer Points?

Hey all, I signed up a few years ago on the Velocity Amex Platinum card via a points hack deal here and got the 100k sign up bonus and $375 fee, was OK cause I would use the domestic flight etc.

Situation post COVID-19 is a bit more limited, didn't get to use the flight 2020 and I know they extended etc but I'm not seeing the benefit as much anymore as won't intend to use it this year either I think or at least till year end. That said, I can save the annual fee or go for a different card etc instead as not fussed on racking up FF points as much now since the goal there was to use for overseas travel which will be a few years before that's realistic for me again.

So, with FF points not as enticing as before I'm tempted to cancel the Amex card and wait out a year and get the big sign up again next time around if possible etc. Makes sense? I'm not a big spender and missed out on the 100k sign up deals etc so trying to see what people thing now post COVID about credit cards and flight points etc.

My annual fee is due in a week or so, used/booked my Amex benefit flight for a friend to use but looking for a good reason to keep it on or switch to a better more OzBargain approved card deal that does a different rewards setup.

What cards are worth switching to if not focused on FF points?

Was a fair call as there really wasn't an obvious question until it was edited

  • Cancel it and find another card - heaps out there.

Maybe less so with Virgin points but Qantas sign up bonuses have heaps around right now

    • Yeah the AMEX 100k points was interesting, but it seems now would be an ideal time to switch out, AMEX seem to have pushed their "waiting" period to 18months based on the last post from the Pointshack deal so longer wait.

I guess the ask really is would it be better to find a non-points based card for the inbetween time.. flybuys or other gift card based cards maybe..

Depends on your annual spend to see if it's worth having a points card

What about a card that earns FlyBuys? Assuming you have a Coles nearby then the rewards will be as good as cash.

    • Yeah this seems to be most logical option and earning the fb points faster via a card like this seems to accelerate payback off shops.
Shame they don’t have gift cards like they once had.

If you are not worried about FF points… a fuss free option is to get a $0 annual fee credit card. Maybe one with 0% fee for international transactions for ease of buying stuff online.

True but I do feel that there’s the benefit to having a points or rewards card that has the same zero fee approach, flybuys cards seem like that would be best option considering groceries discount etc. but net value of say the Amex FF cards had pay fee but get fee back in value and then some…

There’s also zip pay that had their discount structure over Xmas that was good but sad it’s over…
