What Worthwhile Charities Support Online Donations with EFTPOS?

If you are like me you may have 'cashback' EFTPOS cards of small/strange denominations, like from. These are inconvenient to shop in person with as won't cover full amount. I'd like a COVID safe/lazy way of donating these to something worthwhile. Please post links to bona-fide worthwhile Australian tax-deductible charities which accept EFTPOS.

Posting in general discussion on freebies as you may have got these for 'free' and can give a 'free-kick' to a charity.

  • Hi
Charities that help out the local community are worthwhile giving to in my mind.

  • There are zillions of good (and perhaps some not so good) charities on https://www.givenow.com.au/ but they only accept Visa/MasterCard/Amex. Also we need an option to not add a transaction surcharge as this will cause the balance of the EFTPOS card to be exceeded.

Can you not just do split payment at Woolies/Coles? e.g. if you have $15 of groceries, and your EFTPOS card has $2.53 on it, pay $2.53 with your EFTPOS card and the rest on whatever method of payment you prefer. You can even use multiple EFTPOS cards in the same transaction.

I think OP is saying that this is possible but inconvenient. (And I would agree. It's a pain to enter split payment for the exact amount remaining a few times.)

    • yes supermarket self-checkout is probably the easiest

You are on ozbargain and therefore have a responsibility to use your money to get max value.

Simply apply your remaining credit to your purchases at POS. It is the same amount of work to donate it than applying it to your purchase.

    • tax deduction is actually valuable (depends on marginal rate), as well as providing value to charity. So there is a multiplier here…

Couldn’t you make an equivalent donation for the total amount?

      • Charity tax deductions are only tax deductible if the value is $2+

        • And are only valuable to the extent that they reduce the tax payable (at your marginal rate).
So, at best, you are getting just under 50% back on your donation.

Are you hoping to donate in-person or online? As far as I can tell, EFTPOS generally cannot be used to pay for goods and services online. I know there has been news articles talking about EFTPOS expanding to support online transactions, but I am not aware of any retailers (or charities) accepting EFTPOS-only cards online at this moment.

If you are going to be donating in-person, it seems as though you will need to actually find a donation stall or visit a charity’s office in-person. Isn’t that sort of defeating the purpose of a COVID safe/lazy way of donating, since you’ll have to make the effort to travel to a particular location you may not need to visit otherwise? It also assumes EFTPOS machines a charity uses for card payments supports cards with magnetic stripes. I mention this, because I remember last year there was an unmanned Savlos donation stall at the local shopping centre that only accepted contactless card readers. No cash, no magnetic stripes, no chips. I swear a lot of the charity stalls you may find in shopping centres and other public areas these days are actually looking to sign up people to a monthly direct debit plan, rather than one-off donations…

It may be easier to spend the full amount on the EFTPOS card as part of a transaction at a Coles/Woolworths/Target/Kmart/Big W self-service checkout, or ask a shop attendant whether you can do split payments. For example, the local petrol station happily does split payments when I need to use multiple gift cards for a transaction. Yes, I appreciate it is extra effort, but it is only a few extra seconds and a little bit of extra hassle that allows you to use up the remaining value on an EFTPOS card. If you are feeling charitable, you can donate the equivalent amount (or an even larger amount) to a charity of your choice later on.

    • yes was hoping to do online as per the discussion headline 'Online Donations', but i'm aware the POS in EFTPOS is Point Of Sale.

      • D’oh! I really don’t know how I missed that in the title.
