Shall I Get Another Opinion with Faulty Air-Conditioning? or Shall I Just Pay $799 + $880 for The Installation of New One?

Hi, I have a problem with our air-conditioning as it wont turn on, the brand is Dimplex and its around 8 years old.

After costing $150 for the guy to come and have a look he said indoor board and compressor are faulty and they are not able to get the parts.

They suggest we replace the whole thing for around $1679 ($880 installation costs + $799 for the new unit, this one———-> https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/kelvinator-c25kw-h32kw-revers…)

What do you guys think? Is the cost of $880 normal these days for install and removal? Or shall I get a second opinion instead? Or anyone knows whats the rough replacement costs for the indoor board and compressor will cost in rough figure?

I am in Perth so nothing can be done till the lock down ends……………

Thanks many

Don’t repair it, the problem is your buying poor quality units, which are cheap however won’t last. Install depends in the location, should be roughly $600 for basic back to back.

    • The one they suggested have 5 year warranty, so should be ok for 5 years at least I hope. You reckon I should ask for a bit discount as at the moment they are quoting $1679

Aircon installers are often motivated by profit and recommend products that will benefit them. I’d get a few quotes with better quality brands. Otherwise you will be back in 5 years looking for a new Ac.

Get a Daikin. It will be <$2k installed

        • How is the quality of Daikin? Better panasonic?

          • @Aerith-Waifu: We only use Daikin or Mitsubishi Heavy Industries at work, mainly Daikin.

These are the two best quality units but Daikin has better warranty support on the rare occasions we need it.

Yeah funny that, I had a guy check the air-con in my unit and he said there was a leak and needed repair and re-gassing. He was charging $500+.

I told him later in the day that it was actually still under warranty (had 1 month left) and he later recommended that it actually just needs a clean and a service. Dodgy as.

You should get a 2nd and a 3rd quote for a new installation.

Contact the good guys, they should have installers as well. $880 seems abit pricey, thats more than the cost of the unit.

    "Air Conditioning Installation (available)
Use The Good Guys Home Services for a hassle-free Air Conditioning installation. Your licensed installer will unpack, install and test your new air conditioner, provide a demo, clean up and take away the rubbish"

    • i reckon. wouldn't it be an easy swapover? i had a new install for $500

If you are swapping to the same brand yes more than likely, but different brands propably not.

    • Oh nice. didnt know they had the service. I will check it out.

$500 to $600 for a back to back install & another $100 for removal and disposal

    • $100 for removal sound a bit much, I might as for a detailed quote and see what the detailed quote says.

      • how much would you charge?

      • not if the gas inside is disposed of legally

    • You had to pay for removal?
Usually a bit of coin in old units.

  • It depends on how far the pipes need to be run but $880 seems a bit high.

    • As the pipe is already there, wouldnt this just be a straight swap?

      • Might need to change the pipes, as could be different sizing.

    Pick a better brand:
    Mitsubishi heavy industries
    Mitsubishi
    Fujitsu
    Daiken
    Etc

    • Kelvinator and Panasonic is no good?

      • I currently have 3 different brands

I just had my Panasonic serviced under warranty and the parts took 3 weeks to arrive.

Fujitsu serviced for free my dodgy cheap installers faulty instal. - very impressive.

Mitsubishi heavy industries is working fine

Kelvinator, has never been one of the top brands.

Go with blooms list, except skip the Mitsubishi only

Using old pipes can be fraught with issues, not worth the savings unless the installer is one you can follow up on.

        • ok thanks for that. appreciated

$880 is way too high, I would aim for around $500 if its being replaced as half the work is already done.. I also have that aircon installed in my bedroom it's really good and dead quiet also really good on the power bill since it's 5 star energy rated

    • Good point. I will look for another quote instead
