Had a price alert on this which I forgot to unsubscribe from after I have purchased this for $368.24 from Amazon… anyway, hope someone will find this deal useful.

Have had the phone for around 2 months now. I have installed Pixel Experience custom ROM on it, and it has been excellent so far.

Question for OP - you've got the Pixel Experience ROM - can you use Google Pay and your Banking apps on it? I suppose my question is "Does it pass SafetyNet" which is Android's test for security for devices.

This phone intrigues me, but I'm not a fan of MIUI, so the only way I'd bite is if I could run a stock-esque Android that doesn't have a bunch of bugs to do with Bluetooth and whatnot.

    • I'm using LineageOS and I can't use Google Pay - however I can still tap for my payments via Commbank just fine.

      • That's interesting, though I'm not with Commbank - I know their app was a little different to the regular Google Pay implementation.

I guess I'll keep looking around for information.

        Thanks!

    • Not OP but I use LineageOS 17.1 on a Samsung Note 9 and if you don't mind messing around with Magisk you can usually get your device to pass SafetyNet checks (I've got Google Pay working on mine and has been for over a year) but like any workaround Google can and will break it at any time by adding additional checks.

      • I remember Lineage was one of the only ROMs that passed SafetyNet a few years ago. It's a shame that it's not passing now.

I don't really want to muck around with Magisk, but maybe I will have to…

        • The long and short of it is you change your build fingerprint to a device that only supports basic SafetyNet testing instead of advanced (and Magisk can trick basic tests into passing).

https://github.com/Magisk-Modules-Repo/MagiskHidePropsConf/b… has all the info you need if you want to look into it further

@Rhuarcian: There is two things, the first is as you say the build fingerprint which you can easy check in play store to see if your device is certified (basically checks to see if the device is using a certified build fingerprint).

The second thing you could do as an alternative to using magisk is flash a modified kernel which basically removes the safteynet checks and therefore passes safteynet. No Magisk required. Lineage dont allow this as it goes against their Charter. I think the reasoning is that they dont want to allow hacks to pass safteynet by default as it goes against what Google is trying to do. If a user decides to do this for themselves using magisk or modfied kernel then that is up to them.

    • I use PixyOS and managed to get everything working on this phone including NFC Payments/Banking and Government Apps using Magisk Hide, and EdXposed as well as the Device Properties property thingy.

I don't really recommend trying to do it, but if you're already comfortable with Magisk etc then its pretty good.

The camera really feels like the weak point, since the photos it produces for me are terrible. The custom camera apps like GCam and TRCam etc aren't good enough imho. The macro lens is pretty much useless as well. ANXCam only for A10.

Sorry for the late reply. I don't use Google Pay. As for the banking app, the ones I have (NAB, Up) work fine.

  • ~$336 after 4% cashback at cashrewards, pretty good especially as you're buying from Amazon and not Banggood/Aliexpress and beholden to their long shipping times and general dodginess.

    • and that 2 year warranty 🥵

  • I recently bought a Poco X3 but the battery is not reaching 100%…just until 87%. I'm totally sad with this situation cause just starting and my phone is having this issues.
I contacted Xiaomi and they mentioned that is not an authorised reseller. Since I purchased my product from an unauthorised reseller I am not covered under Panmi warranty and technical support.
Purchases made outside their scope cannot be claimed under their services.
I don't know why they mentioned 2 years of warranty if they are not able to cover it. At the moment, I am here with my problem without any solution about warranty from Xiomi because my phone was purchased from Amazon.

This review seems pretty concerning considering the prominence of the "2 year warranty" in the listing. Have you looked into the warranty at all yourself?

    • Where did that person buy from? Amazon UK??

      • Yeah that's from the Amazon listing OP posted, one of the top displayed for me — apparently they're Australian as well. "Reviewed in Australia on 26 January 2021"

Edit: Unless it's some Amazon weirdness where they bought from a different seller who lists on the site but their review was aggregated under the one listing, but I don't think Amazon tells you if that's the case.

        • Amazon catalogue and aggregate a whole bunch of reviews under 1 listing (specially for those that shows you the option of Third Party Seller).
Nonetheless the user has tried to get local Xiaomi warranty on a grey import, he should be dealing with Amazon which will tell him to free ship the item back to seller and either get a refund/replacement.

  • Bought Banggood for A$309 last week for the same spec. Does the UK version has Band28?

    • +1

      I think they all do?

    • I think all Poco X3 NFC has band 28, but there is a Poco X3 without b28 or NFC. So all NFC editions do.

Guess China has no real need for NFC, since they just use WeChat or equivalent which uses QR codes for payment and other. Only the tiniest bit less convenient than nfc

    • All Poco X3s have B28 and so do all Global RN9s.
www.mi.com or Kimivil is your best source for reliable info,… NOT the sellers listing.

Be aware Banggood have had my order for 3 weeks and it's still processing. I spoke to their orders team this morning and they are saying another 2 weeks before they get stock😭

      Amazon took forever for mine.
I received mine on the 15th January, ordered on the 10th December

    • I bought from them on Jan 28 and they are still processing. Says "Estimated to ship before February 9, 2021"

    • I contacted Banggood yesterday and they said they're looking to restock before 13/02. Bloody dodgy the way they do their business. Poor form.

      • Did the Banggood listing show "in stock" or "Expected to ship before Feb 13" when you ordered?
They are usually pretty good at showing stock status but sometimes people overlook that.

  • Great phone, really impressed with the battery life.
Still not sure I notice the whole 120hrtz screen, but it doesn't seem to be affecting battery life much.

Camera is really good. Most impressed by the thermals, I've never seen a phone stay so cool - even under GPS use.

  • Thanks for the deal OP

  • I got 64gb prior to xmas, still running stock ROM with no issues..

    Great phone.

  • Running ArrowOS on it for 2 months now which is being updated almost daily! No problem at all. Great phone for the price. A little too heavy at first but you will get used to it and after a while other phones feel too light (and not sturdy enough!)

    • Have you got Google Pay working?

      • Not using any of those stuff. The first reason I go with Custom ROM is to get rid of Google and you are asking me about Google Pay?

        • Well, to be fair, I didn't know why you went with a custom ROM - for instance, I do it to get rid of OS bloat.

Also, I've installed AOSP before, and installed the smaller Google packages instead of the full fat ones to get some of the benefits but skip the rest.

I totally understand the position of de-googling though, and have thought about how to do this without losing the convenience - it's pretty hard!

For my own use case, I want to be able to use banking apps and Google Pay on my phone, but not need to deal with the OS level ads and spyware that you get on many of these budget phones (MIUI, ColorOS, etc.)

          • @Droz: I know but at the end of the day you can either have privacy or convenience unless you can work your way out from time to time by learning new tricks to get things work the way you like.
People here complain about fiddling with some settings in Magisk or tweaking some root files to get what they want! Well, if you don't want to own your phone and get your own things done, better stick with the stock ROM and give up your privacy to big tech.

  • would this be considered a good upgrade from OnePlus 6?

    Cheers!

  • How does one install pixel experience rom and if you could use banking apps with it?
