Sony Xperia 5 II 8GB RAM / 256GB in Grey or Blue $1008 Delivered, Black or Pink $1012 Delivered (Import Stock, HK) @ MyMobile

280

Have been eyeing on the phone for awhile till I saw MyMobile has it, seems like a good deal.
This phone is usually priced $1100> (without the duty).

[BLUE] (https://mymobile.com.au/sony-xperia-5-ii-dual-5g-256gb-xq-as…) $1004
[BLACK] (https://mymobile.com.au/sony-xperia-5-ii-dual-5g-256gb-xq-as…) $1012
[PINK] (https://mymobile.com.au/sony-xperia-5-ii-dual-5g-256gb-xq-as…) $1012 if you fancy this colour

Most their phones are imported from what I've read from previous threads, but we wouldn't need to pay the extra import duty due to them settling it.

and a few peeps on Whirlpool have bought it through them nil issues (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/348j8kv3)
comes with 1-year local warranty.

not as good as the previous CLOVE UK deal around 920$ with bundled headphones but was the 128gb variant.

P.S. this phone has a headphone jack.

  • Add me to the MM satisfied customer list.

Also - this includes GST - so there's another $91 or so if you can get it back - Norfolk Island anyone? :)

Any deals on the Xperia Pro?

    • +2

i've never looked into the Xperia Pro as its way above my budget and I do not have a camera.
      Good luck hunting :)

  • why no successor of Sony Xperia Z Ultra with bigger screen maybe 6.9"?
anyone still using it? body so thin and sexy…….

    • +1

Loved mine but it was just too fragile. Cracked screen in my pocket then when i got it repaired it fried itself. Modern phablets aren't that much smaller than the ultra and don't have the chunky bezels that ate up so much pocket real estate.

    • Tell me more about that body…

  • +5

This is an insane price for this phone - it was selling for over 1,300 late last year.

  • Awkward placement of fingerprint sensor on the side, something to watch out for if you're left handed.

    • +4

Can use middle finger to unlock when hold it on left hand.

      • +1

Yep that's how my old Xperia (X Compact) is set up. No complaints at all whichever hand I pick up the phone with.

I've seen other people use rear sensor ones and whilst it's probably no big deal in the grand scheme of things, being able to unlock it in how you normally hold the phone anyway seems a whole lot more convenient to me.

    • +3

I've used an Xperia with this finger print configuration and found it to be the most natural of any location (including front or back, both of which I've also used). Also, it's interesting that you're criticising it for a feature that a twice more expensive iPhone doesn't even have.

      • Good to have your feedback on it, as I dont have any experience with side fingerprint sensors, only ones at the back. Not sure how iPhones come into the picture though?

        • I love the side fingerprint reader, primarily right handed phone user though. Also like the rear one on pixel 2, I find the both of them more reliable than in display ones I have used.

        • I've had the back fingerprint sensor on an Axon 7 and now the side fingerprint sensor on the Zenfone 7 Pro. Side is much more convenient to unlock I've found. Back was always annoying, particularly with a case. I use both hands and for my right I have the thumb, index and middle fingers while for the left I have the thumb and middle finger.

        • +1

An iPhone is somewhat of a benchmark. I mentioned it because I find it interesting that the same people who critisise Sony for having the fingerprint scanner on the side, don't critisise the iPhone, costing twice as much, for not having one at all (and don't even get me started about the headphone jack, or the notch).

  • without the duty

But how will I be able to answer the call of duty on this phone without it?

  • +3

Bought one last week and waiting for delivery. They ship from Hong Kong warehouse to the Brisbane shop then they Auspost it to you.

Edit: had the Xperia premium xx with the same fingerprint scanner. Was really convenient. Only downside was to be careful when putting it in your pocket, the scanner was sensitive. Can't comment on the scanner sensitivity of 5 ii yet though.

  • Sony always offer great sensors but the software side is lacking and Sony have no incentive to improve camera quality as it could take away from camera sales.

    • +2

Sony have no incentive to improve camera quality as it could take away from camera sales.

This is very a strange statement, especially considering the size of Sony's phone market - it competes with other phones, not with dedicated cameras. And by all accounts, this camera is very good.

      • Sony doesn't compete with other phone makers in all segments they said that themselves. plus this phone is not even top 20 on DXOmark scores just above the Mi 9 pro.
        https://www.dxomark.com/rankings/#smartphones

        • dxomark is an absolute sham. Stupidly subjective scoring scale and reviews.

I hear that mkiii is coming out soon

  • Tempting but I will wait for its successor (https://www.gsmarena.com/first_sony_xperia_1_iii_renders_sho…) as I don't like the top bezel. If they keep the same pace as last year, it is four months away :(

    • If money's no object, then sure

    • Interest rates are low, so good once its released, get cracking and find the best home loan you can. I hear Athena and Well Home Loans are good options.

    • global shortage of silicon atm, I'd imagine phone makers are going to have to pay up for the next generation of phones

  • Anyone had any experiences with using the Xperia 5ii here in Aus?
I was under the impression that we miss a few of the crucial bands?

  • +4

I have this phone and really like it. the skinny aspect ratio makes it nice to use one handed, but also means most videos don't fit the whole display.
The camera/s are great and the shutter button is a nice feature to have. (Which includes a half press focus)
The device is very snappy compared to my exynos S10 and battery is fantastic.
Android is minimally modified, just how I like it, just updated to android 11 which brought in a few handy new features not present in stock android 10.
So far I have not been able to get Wifi calling to work which is one of the major downsides to buying this phone.
Doesn't have super fast charging or wireless charging which is a plus in my eyes since the battery should last longer without the heat stress.

    • Do you happen to use the pro-apps much?

as am actually looking at getting it for shooting short films/youtube videos.
instead of getting professional camera gear and all.

      • +3

I use the pro camera app, but only in auto mode, so kind of pointless really but I prefer it over the stock one.

    • Had any issues making calls and using Aus sims?

  • 1000+ means you get slugged $300 import duty?

    • +1

apparently mymobile imports into their store,
and then ships out to you from their brissy? store.

    • Listed price includes GST. So the price is under 1k. No customs.

  • Cheaper elsewhere AU$994 with 1yr warranty and free insurance (not sure what the free insurance entails). However, shipping cost maybe extra and might work out a bit more expensive at the end. https://www.becextech.com.au/catalog/sonxp5ii256gbbluins-p-1…

    • +2

Yep shipping cost kills that deal, and alot of ozbargainers havent had good experience with Becextech.

  • Does the phone work on Australian Bandwidths in the metro areas?

    • +1

Yes, it supports all Australian bandwidths including our sub-6GHz 5G networks. That includes Band 28, which provides reception along country roads and country areas. I used an XZ1 Compact for 2 years in Sydney and it worked flawlessly.

  • Been wanting to buy this phone but was so unsure with Sony Withdrawing out of Aus but will pick up one now :)
