🥩 is still one of the best/cheapest broker to invest in US stock within Australia. Also much easier too. The amount of hoops had to do through Commsec was annoying.

Can fund via Bank Card, POLi and US direct transfers via TransferWise and Revolt note different payment options are priced differently as well as the requested speed of delivery.

It's a good alternative to buying US shares as Robinhood has banned trading in these stocks.

Terms and Conditions

First post will be reserved for what Ozbargainers have won on the spin and win

The app has been a little crappy at the moment due to the volume of users but been working well on Friday. I think they will need to compensate us somehow. Perhaps more free shares 🤣

Trading starts at 12:30AM Mon to Friday GMT+10

US share market is going through some interesting times. GME Gamestop🚀 Silver looks like will be next. Be interesting trading next week.

I bet there will be a movie made. No shortage of New Movie Lines

    Damn you GoPro.

  • +1

I LIKE THE MFKN STONK!! ROBINHOOD GET REKT!!

  • +2

I got Dropbox as my free share.
I'm still a little hesitant about continuing to use Stake given the outages last Thursday/Friday, but they have put out a lot of communications via emails, Twitter posts and blog posts. So I'm gonna keep using them for now (at least until the GME shenanigans is over; I got 2.6 shares haha).
eToro is another alternative to access to US markets.

    • +1

      It was bad!

  • +10

Stake sucks. Do not use it. The last week or more the website doesn't load, the app doesn't work. Artificial limits on selling and buying.

It will probably work fine right now until market opens and then it will be completely useless until the market closes (NYSE). Can't sell, can't buy, can't transfer, RIP.

      It does sucks.
      Lost $$$ during the outage.

  • +2

What does it cost to trade on this? SelfWealth can do US stocks for US$9.50 per trade.

  • +3

this post needs more emojis if I'm going to take it seriously

    • +2

I’m a simple man, I see multiple rocket emojis, I buy.

  • I got GoPro last week. Stake has been OK for me so far but I haven't had a need to use it since I bought GME last Monday.
    EDIT: 💎👏💎👏💎👏 (or something)

    • is there a $5 USD fee for "There is a one-off fee to complete and file your US tax form"

      • Yep, though since I bought the stock with no real expectation of making any money as long as I break even I'll be happy.

        • is this the only stock you have, and even if you break even what's the point

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: It's the only US stock I have (apart from the free GoPro). The whole exercise to open an account and buy 1 GME share has cost me about $110AUD so far, and I've learnt a lot along the way so 🤷

  • -2

    Up over 800% you?

    • -1

is there a $5 usd to sign up in order to sell the free share

  • it says start on march 16th

  • +1

So for $50AUD it says I'd receive $31.11USD but when i look in google it says $50AUD = $38.13USD so i'd receiving about $7USD less then I should (guessing this is Stake fees?)

So if I end up with the cheapest stock GoPro $8.95 USD after selling & withdrawing I wouldn't really be making a profit would I with all the fees? Is there a $2 fee for withdrawing on Stake too?

Need to be lucky & get Nike or Dropbox stock for this to be worth it?

    • that's a rip off, it says deposit $50 aud nothing about transferring

      • Says there is a $5 USD fee for "There is a one-off fee to complete and file your US tax form. This is required to trade US shares."

  • +3

Stake has been absolutely terrible to use the last few days…. Would go anywhere else

Site/app has been unusable for hours
Have had multiple buy/sell orders at market price go through only to later find out they were rejected
Orders stuck at pending on market price for 30 minutes with no way of cancelling and then executed at the lowest possible price
And a lot more crap to deal with

  • +6

Stake's been offering the same bonus for eons. Not a deal

    In OP's own words

Wow they have reverted the original referral and now this is a bargain?. Surprised there haven't been anymore negs.

Here is your neg… as requested

    • -5

Load up on the negs because the deal was deleted
after I posted so this is progress. Its a long running deal and should be posted as such.

  • I use stake it isn't the most 'reliable' platform but it is pretty good

I also use CMC markets which i havent had an issue with but it only allows >$1000 trades for international shares but US/Japanese/Canadian and Nz are free to trade

  • +3

I could not buy or sell shares when I needed this platform the most at the time of volatility. Other times I hardly needed to make any transaction. So because it failed in such a way and cost me potential loss, I would give it a negative vote.

  • +4

I rarely downvote deals but in addition to the app performance issues mentioned above. They sneakily added a new rule that restricts your buy/sell limit orders to +/- 3% of the live share price. This can really mess you up if you're trading volatile stonks.

    See: https://mobile.twitter.com/hellostake/status/135576938565944…

My advice, take advantage of (abuse) the free stock offer and don't use this platform to trade unless they address these issues.

The stake team have really let their customers down last week.

  • I got a Dropbox share when I signed up last week.
Moving to the Westpac trading platform… No idea if it's any good but I like the stock.

    • Not sure why I got negged - is the westpac platform worse than Commsec?
I already bank with Westpac, and the fees seemed similar to me

Would be good to know what other Aussies are using, if not Stake.

    • +2

seems to favor the cheaper shares, I got dropbox too

      • 22% chance of getting that.

        • +1

So far I got: Dropbox and GoPro from a referral.

The chances of getting a better stock also doesn't appear to be to affected by how much you deposit.

          Here's my experience:

          Me: $100 deposit = Dropbox
Referred friend: $5000 deposit = GoPro (I also got GoPro too)

          • +1

@cd-v: Mate it tells you the chances above.

            • @Korban Dallas: Just wanted to post some actual data to complement the advertised 'odds'

  • +1

yep disappointed with Stake after trying it out last week.
    Look elsewhere.

  • +3

They got rid of funding via Credit Card and now only offer POLi to us. No way I'm handing over bank login details, and I can't see how to direct deposit funds to them. Now what?

    • Strange you are buying shares with a credit card. Kinda like using a credit card to pay off your home loan. Don't even think you can do that with Commsec. Could be wrong.

    • You get a Macquarie cash management account with Stake. You can fund that directly then transfer from there to your US wallet without having to hand over any account details to Stake.

  • +1

I had three people use my code and fund their accounts only to receive two free stock. I haven't been able to utilise the app or website for over a week as it was down or buggy. Now I find out that the only way I can fund my account is through polipay. I'm really disappointed in stake.

    • Poli is not the only funding method. You get a Macquarie cash management account with Stake which you can fund directly then transfer from that to your US wallet. The reason people miss this option is because if there are no funds in the Macquarie account then it is not an available option when you go to transfer funds in STAKE.

    • +1

I have just signed up. Polipay counts me out funding easily with my current banks (ING & Macquarie). Direct internet banking transfer seems to be disabled as an option, I have sent a help-desk enquiry. Also $GME, $AMC and $NOK are all blocked for buys atm.

      • +1

Update on funding non-poli from Stake , "The best to transfer at the moment would be using Direct USD transfer from a US bank account or through a third party FX provider e.g. Transferwise."

        No thanks

      • Guys, I'll say this one last time: if you have a STAKE account then you also have a Macquarie Cash Management account in your name. You should have received the details of this account when you originally signed up with STAKE. If you did not or cannot find your details you should be able to gain access to the account by following this link and proving your identity:
        https://online.macquarie.com.au/personal/#/error/trouble_log…

        • Hi Aldroid, link does not work for me
And I did not get details of a Macquarie Cash Management in my name on signup
When I login to my existing Maquarie banking there is no mention of this account

          Sounds like something has changed

          • @acapella: OK, so in the STAKE app when you go to "Personal Settings" -> "Funds & Balances" -> scroll down to "Banking", is there no "Macquarie CMA (AUD)" listed above the "Withdraw Funds" button?

  • So whats tue best alternative for us to use. Is there something akin to robinhood here

    • If u only want to trade major stocks, go with etoro. Otherwise go with IG or IBKR. They’re cheaper overall (hence u only see Stake comparing to the expensive ones), and they also have their referral program that are more certain than this spin the wheel from Stake.

  • +2

STAKE has been great up until a week ago. I've been using the platform for 2+ years without any issues whatsoever. Honestly, I think the "issues" they are having at the moment are more political than technical.

    • Stake worked amazing last night. Was on it for a few hours.

If you rely on it to be a day trading platform I can see why people were annoyed. But honestly, probably should be using commsec.

      • I beg to differ. Perhaps it depends what you were trying to do. I had orders on certain stocks that were not fulfilled (even though the price dropped way below my limit order). And yes I am aware of the 3% margin. Worse still, when I tried to cancel the pending orders the system failed keeping my funds tied up for hours. This has been a common occurrence over the last week. Plenty of unhappy STAKE Black customers on Twitter and Reddit channels have experienced exactly the same thing.

  • +1

GME, AMC and NOK can't be bought on Stake anymore. Poor form.

  • Take care with Stake, their +6102 nsw support number goes to message bank. Trying to find out what's happened to my Revolut to Stake USD to USD direct transfer done on the 1st of Feb and no response from their support team on email.
Are there any Stake reps here?

    • They reply via twitter and app store reviews promptly.

    • Sent a support email enquiry. Got a response in 2 hours today.

  • This broker has turned to trash ever since they made you pay for black.

The core features of trading are missing. What a joke. This is no longer a deal because everyone that joins now will be missing the core features.

    EDIT:
It looks like old members got shafted too if they didn't have $5k on march 2020.

  • +2

It looks like Stake are also offering free Bumble Stock ($39USD worth) from 11th Feb-28th Feb.

    • "This content is restricted in your region"

  • Almost feel like their free stock is a scam

Got a $3.2 usd worth stock invested $300 aud for it.

Sick of this. Scam free stock

    • I got a Nike stock. 🚀 When someone used my referral link.
