Approx $50 cheaper than the lowest local price. Not a bad price for a brand name, capacitive touch Android Auto/Apple Carplay, Double-DIN with DAB+. No physical buttons on unit which is a deal-breaker for many but should work with steering wheel controls via adaptor. Will hopefully work with factory reverse cameras with only simple mods. Most probably doesn't include a DAB+ antenna however they can be had for about $30 or less via eBay etc. Obviously a risk if a warranty claim is required but that's up to you to assess.

UPDATE: Could possibly drop to as low as about $538.05 after 4% CashRewards cashback however that needs confirmation.

Pioneer and Kenwood will not need SWC adaptor for most models as it can read SWC signals.

Speaking from experience as I just bought a Pioneer unit with no physical buttons (and unfortunately no steering controls), I have buyers remorse. Head unit is great however I miss physical buttons (especially volume dial).

    • Yeah, agree. I put Pioneer DAB+ Double-DINs into previous cars and although excellent units I found the touch-controls (especially the critical ones such as volume) a real let-down. Newer units such as this may be better as they're capacitive touch however nothing comes close to a good old fashioned tactile button or knob control. Steering Wheel controls are a must IMO.

    • do after market wireless steering controls work?

can be as low as 30 bux.

      • I've seen them but never tried them so can't comment sorry.

was just something for oxblood, given he has buyers remorse, maybe one of these could get him over the line.

    • These wireless controls that attach to steering wheel are what I used in my other car.

  • Got an older GD i30 and the headunit is not only rubbish it failed again (no audio) after warranty replacement - this is perfect timing for a deal but there's so many adapters and harnesses and facias to work out… I'm finding it a bit overwhelming. I've removed and reinstalled the existing unit to get an idea if it was a dodgey connection but car audio is not my area of expertise and finding the process a little complex.

I found a few sites that have really easy to use menus where you select the car model, fascia + harness kit, headunit, optional USB/AUX adaptors to retain the OE connections, steering wheel controls etc but by the time you select all the options end up with $1200-$1300 purchase. How much extra do you need to spend on top of the above headunit to get steering wheel controls and USB carplay/ USB android auto? Ideally I'd want wireless carplay/ android auto but that depends on extra $$$. My wife's got iphone I have android so wireless would make sense to avoid 2 cables.

This is my second car, it's low km and looked after incredibly well (it could pass for 4yo car when it's almost 8) but I dont want to spend big money on something that's gonna get driven 5000km per year max. Getting the exact same unit from a wrecker is not a good idea because of the failure rate of these headunits (first generation GDs non sat nav). I would get one if wreckers were giving them out for free but other than that they're not worth much.

Yeah, it can be confusing, especially when you want to do it all at once! How about doing a reccie and taking detailed pics of how the factory unit is connected inc. detailed pics of all the unplugged connections themselves then go from there… researching & buying only what you need. Alternatively just get the $100 fascia kit and a new head unit just to get you back up and running then add the other bits and pieces (reverse camera adaptor, steering wheel adaptor, DAB antenna etc) at a later stage after you know exactly what you need.

      • You're right - fascia + steering wheel adapter is only thing I need to get going - I can listed to spotify via bluetooth to start off with before working out the extras I need for DAB radio or reverse camera (I dont have one and dont think I would bother with a hatchback). I will also leave full carplay and android auto functionality for later even though it seems to only need 1 cable from back of the unit to the existing USB connection in the car.

Wreckers are selling the upgraded headunits from the later generation i30 for a lot of money. They are more reliable and can be firmware upgraded to carplay and android auto but once you add it all up they're about the same as a brand new unit that will probably last longer. Here's an example of what ppl have been retrofiting into my generation i30:

$484 for that OEM unit from a car with 29,000Km (ie. it hasn't been used much) looks like an absolute bargain to me.
Have you compared it to the new-from-Hyundai price ? I'm guessing it will cost well over $1000…

          • @Nom: I think it was around $800 for my unit that got replaced under warranty by Hyundai but I didn't pay for it. I would guess this newer unit would be more. Problem with this $484 unit is that it's not plug and play as is. The wrecker has to carefully remove the AUX/USB jack assembly because connection has changed a bit (not many wrecker sell with this) + I got to source another separate USB lead… one you include postage a brand new unit with warranty become a bit more appealing. The annoying thing is you have to find both main parts and they're in high demand because of the amount of headunits like mine that fail… Early GD i30s sold like hot cakes so there are a few other ppl in the same situation as me.

FYI @Slick7… I just finished the research & purchase of all the adaptor cables & other bits & pieces I need to put this Pioneer into my Corolla. The total came to just under $200 and only because Corollas only need a couple of cheap little pieces of plastic to mount the new unit instead of needing an entire new fascia so yes, your Hyundai will need $300+ of extras (but probably not too much more).

          • @SteveAndBelle: any tips on how you conducted your research? what sort of fascia and adapters did you get? where did you purchase from?

I'm not finding any stock of the upgraded i30 headunit from wreckers - I could wait it out but getting frustrated despite using the second car 2 times a week. All I have is a giant annoying clock on the display. I am listing to music from my speakerphone :(

@slick7: The Aerpro site is probably your best start and should help with cables, harnesses and adaptors but it's also good to simply Google for pics of the rear of the factory unit and compare the plugs/sockets to whatever after market unit you decide on. Also good to just have a quick look at the factory unit itself and the existing cables/loom. For the fascia though I'd probably just Google that and try to find the cheapest one that you consider acceptable.
