17" Laptop Question - Looking for a Cheap One with Good CPU (Budget $1500)

I'm just wondering if anybody knows a great deal for a laptop with the following specs, maybe under $1,500 obviously the cheaper the better. Something really that has a good CPU, to futureproof it. It's a desktop replacement and I'm stuck in one room all the time with the desktop. It's for university and I'd like more screen room when studying. I have a small laptop for when I'm out, but a bigger screen would be good when I'm in the house for the big tasks I do. I have a lot of things open

  • 17" screen (touchscreen would be amazing)
  • CPU that has a benchmark minimum of 15k or greater on cpubenchmark.com
  • Not too concerned with graphics
  • 16GB+ of RAM (maybe I will need more as I have so many browsers and tabs, I don't really know).
  • 256GB+ NVME or something quick to start up.
  • At least 2 USB ports
  • Removeable battery
  • Don't care about weight but it has to sit on my legs and I want to walk.
  • MS Windows
  • Long battery would be good so I could sit in the garden too.
  • Hm maybe a screen that can be bright for the garden lol

I think that's everything I can think of. I don't care about brand etc. Is this asking too much for a big screen?

  • "A screen that can be bright for the garden"
For this one you can buy an anti glare screen protector (matte) and stick it to your laptop. Should be less than $50.

For 17" laptop with $1500 budget, you're asking too much for a brand new one.

If screen size is your priority, consider a Surface Laptop with 3:2 screen ratio. 15" will look like 17".

I would recommend Huawei MateBook X Pro for $1500 range for office productivity.

  • +1

Maybe I need to try find a big 15" or save more. Or wait for Black Friday.

Finding one on eBay is difficult because I always have to check the processor speed. I want something faster than my desktop as it's getting old (i7-4770).

Thank you all for your comments.

  • This seems to look like a near miss but someone might appreciate it.

I get confused with screen sizes. Some say 15 but look really big but other 15 are small. I recently got a travelling netbook that was 13.3 and I thought it would be bigger than my last 12" but it's actually smaller. Anyway I found:

    • AMD Ryzen 4700U
    • 16GB RAM
    • 512GB storage
    • 12 hour battery with fast charge
    • 1.8kg

Biggest issue I see is no backlit keyboard which I didn't think about, and no web cam!! Seriously I thought all laptops had a webcam.

I'll keep looking at putting things here I think are good which I find Ok, maybe it will help people who are also looking. AMD 400 range machines seem cheaper and faster than the Intel ones.

  • This seems ok, not sure if the processor will be good enough down the track though. What do you think? Any opinions will be appreciated.

How do you know if more RAM can be put in it?

  • How annoying. I bought the HP one and even though the advert picture says backlit keyboard, there isn't one. It's very difficult to see the keyboard. Can hardly use it at night and I'm constantly lifting it up to see. They shouldn't lie lie that, now I'm stuck.
