[PC,MacOS,Linux,RasPi] Free Game - Celeste Classic 2: Lani’s Trek @ Itch.io

Moved to Forum: Original Link

To celebrate the third birthday of Celeste a sequel, Celeste 2: Lani’s Trek, is out now and free to play!

According to The Verge, "Celeste was one of the most acclaimed games of 2018, but what you may not have known is that the tightly designed platformer was an expanded version of a smaller project developed in four days at a game jam. Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry created the original Celeste for the Pico-8 platform, and now that version has a sequel called Celeste 2: Lani’s Trek."

"…you can download Windows, Mac, Linux, and Raspberry Pi versions for free from Itch.io, or play it in your browser at that link."

It's not a AAA game or anything, but as far as indie titles go it was one of the big ones.

"It won many awards, including the Best Independent Game and Games for Impact awards at The Game Awards 2018, where it was also nominated for Game of the Year."

It was also one of the first games I went and downloaded when I got access to it on GamePass. I'm only a couple of chapters in but loving it so far.

Plays a lot better than it looks! A bit like my ex-wife!

        • +5

You're missing out on a lot of really great games if you only care about graphical fidelity and realism…

          • @Tiges98: Reading Tiges98's comment fills you with determination!

        • It's not really representative, it's just the Flappy Bird effect.

    • +7

      nobody has heard of it.

I got the game free from Epic Store, played it till completion (minus the golden strawberry) and bought another copy from Steam, and played the main game + DLC.

Bold of you to assume that you represent everybody

The dev behind this game - Matt Thorson - also has another great game which has solo and couch co-op modes: Towerfall Ascension

    • +3

You mean Maddy Thorson. Yes, he identified with his character in Celeste enough that he became her (Madeleine).

A bit disingenuous to post this as a deal under the name 'Celeste 2' when really it should be called 'Celeste Classic 2' which is what it's listed as on itch.io and fully explains that its a sequel to Celeste Classic - which has always been free, not Celeste (2018). Posting this is like finding any free browser based game and posting it as a deal, which it really isn't.

Not even something like Deltarune Chapter 1 was posted as a free deal when it came out and that game is a legitimate sequel lol.

    • Just a tad misleading then

    • +3

I was gonna say, how did Celeste get a sequel and I wasn't aware of it? Reddit would be full of hidden gem memes.

    • -1

Apologies, that was unintentional. The deal page refers to the game as "Celeste 2: Lani’s Trek" in the screenshot, and the download files are "Celeste 2". original article also refers to it as Celeste 2: Lani’s Trek. The only reference I found to "Celeste Classic 2" was in the page title.

It's more than just a browser based game as you can download it as an app for four operating systems so it's still a good offer…..and free!

Was the review by the same"Verge" that build epic computers??

    • +1

Some say they wrote the review using a Swiss army knife.

      • Well i heard that it was written with a wet bit of pasta… but i may be wrong

    • +1

It's a news article, not a review lol

I upvoted this deal just to raise OzB awareness of pico-8! It is such a cool product, an all-in-one retro fantasy console and IDE. I have built (95%) a plug-and-play arcade stick for playing the "roms", which are shared freely as .png files with the games in the header. I have the parts en route to build a C64-style retro pc/keyboard from a raspi zero w. I got it with the itch.io racial justice bundle last year.

    • Noice! Are you going to release it?

      • hey sorry if I mislead you, I'm not a dev or anything, just a fan. I have used some arcade buttons and a joystick to make a plug-and-play hardware console of Pico-8. I can post a pic if anyone is interested, but it is still covered in painters tape. I need to order a badge or sticker or something to finish it off…

        • Ahhh sorry I misread. What stick and buttons do you use? Thinking of upgrading the standard setup on my Hori arcade stick to Sanwas.

          • +1

@ramboando: Sort by cheapest including postage on eBay. Buy it now! Ha!

    • Oh pico-8 is a real thing? I just thought it was the fake system used in the game

    • Pico-8 is an “imaginary” console.
The dev released a software emulator that runs on windows/Mac/Linux and includes some programming tools.

It is reminiscent of running an old 8-bit system on an emulator. It is fun to program because it has limited complexity compared to a modern system, again seeking to recreate the feeling that came with a c64 (or a vz200 in my case) where you could have a go at writing your own games.

If you like playing retro emu games check it out. If you think it would be fun to write programs it is worth playing with.
      A licence is about $20.

  • According to The Verge

According to the verge you need a swiss army knife that you hope has a screwdriver on it to build a PC.

    • Well if they're ever giving away a free PC that requires building feel free to post it on OzB! lol

    • This seems to be a heated discussion, someone get the thermal paste applicator

  • +2

I'm not sure free indie games that were made in 3 days can really be classified as a "deal". There's literally thousands of freeware titles that could be posted, but I don't really think OzBargain is the place for it.

    • -1

It's free. It's made by the makers of one of the best indie games of 2018. And it's got the upvotes to show. Length of development time alone isn't a sign of a good game…..look at Cyberpunk 2077 for proof.

      • Rofl. Another of the "if people vote for it on OZB it must be good" crowd. Sorry, it's still not a bargain.
