Car Insurance for UberEATS and Food Delivery

I was looking into potentially getting into doing some food delivery/UberEATS as a casual thing on the side of my full time job. The problem is, everywhere I look for insurance, they don't offer it for 'food delivery'. Some insurers have the option of 'rideshare', but as far as I know, this is different to food delivery. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Is there anyone doing food delivery and if so, what insurer are you with? Is it considerably expensive, like I've heard? Happy to hear any other comments etc. on the matter. Im in Victoria.

  • Bingle

    • I've heard a couple of things about Bingle being no good. Havs you had any experience with them? Also not sure if they cover food delivery

      • You're going to hear negative things about every insurer, there isn't a perfect one

        • This is true. I just double checked Bingle and they definitely don't do cover for UberEATS :(

      • No but they are only one in the market that would cover you!

UberEats driving hasn't got the same regulation as Uber driving. Vehicle registration, driver background checks and licensing (depending on state)

I am wondering how insurers are going to know you are an UberEats driver? They going to get an expert to sniff and pinpoint you could not have had all that food in a personal capacity last night.

    • Maybe the big ubbereats hotbag will be the giveaway?

      • Is it requirement. Just use a non marked hot bag. Why would you leave a hot bag in there for the assessors to see? Most claims are now over the phone and you take it into their repair facility (unless you can choose your own repairer).

If there isn’t anything specific for Uber eats, I guess you just disclose that the car would be occasionally used for work/ commercial purposes. See what responses you get with your inquiries. Please post the results here. Information is a two way street. It would be nice if you could share what you find.

There's actually a food delivery option when selecting insurance, but a lot of the time the quote shows a message of 'we cannot cover you for this use'.

I contacted Youi, who said they cover it, but it was going to set me back $3000 :(

check RACV TPP, their business price and personal price is same when I checked. I think part time business (not GST registered) is also covered with private. I am not sure though so better to check with them.

  • ubereats says you are a contractor, therefore you are running a business.

If you use the vehicle substantially for ubereats then it has to be registered as a business vehicle and insured as such. This will give you lots of tax deductions.

If uber eats makes up a small proportion of the usage then it's private usage with "some business use". When you fill out the insurance application you tick that box.

    • Is there any downside to registering my car as a business vehicle, even if I was only doing a handful of hours here and there?

      • I would say there are some tax advantages but you should discuss that with your accountant

  • did you end up finding an insurer for ubereats? I'm looking into this as well.

  • Has anyone found a insurance company in Australia yet that would be specific to only using your car 6-8 hours per week? Thanks.

  • Check out AAMI they responded with $1400 per year!

  • I wonder if your employer will cover the extra premium cost to adjust it to cover ubereats?
