Insurance for The Phone against Theft, Screen Damage

Recently upgraded my phone. The service provider, even though they seem to offer insurance, somehow, they said they forgot. Now, I am with this new phone but I am worried about theft, screen damage as the repair costs are high.

Someone said I could get these covered under home and content insurance. I was also advised to consider apple icare for the screen damage protection.

What has been your experience with the above options to protect the phone and, are there other options you suggest?

How many phones have you had stolen?!

  • Have lost one so far and broken glass. Both ended up being expensive

  • Amex has screen insurance? Lost or stolen if you have car and house/ contents you should be fine. You get mugged that's unlucky :/ you lose it… well perhaps you are unlucky? But the screen insurance from Amex is allright in my view.

They have managed to put doubt in your mind.

Don't drop your phone and buy a decent shock resistant case.

    • Good idea :-)

Check with your Carrier whether you have a Window where they can Add Insurance Cover (obviously prior to any loss or damage).

It seems odd that if Insurance was talked about, the Carrier Agreement doesn't explicitly say if it was offered and declined by you.

If it is the case that you wouldn't have bought the Phone if you couldn't get Insurance on it at time of purchase, I'm wondering why it wasn't offered or if it was declined. You could talk with the TIO about this…

Otherwise look at: https://valuables.bupa.com.au/policy?utm_content=valuablesin… for a Quote for Stand Alone Cover.

Seems it's likely all the same underwriter that the major firms are contracting out to…
NRMA has the exact same site i.e. https://insurance4that.com.au/

      Reviews aren't the greatest.

Insurance for The Phone against Theft, Screen Damage

The people who take out this insurance are self selecting - more likely to lose, break, etc. Not the population average. Hence premiums will be high to reflect this.

    • Not necessarily true. The concept of insurance itself is all about getting the cover due to unforeseen circumstances isn't it? May be the tolerance level for individuals to opt for insurance or not and how much might differ

      • I would say its definitely true.

Most of us will go our whole lifetime without having a phone stolen or lost in Australia.

Most of us will keep the phone in a safe place, because we know we don't have insurance.

So its only logical that someone who gets phone insurance is going to have a higher chance of claiming, either because they won't take as much care of it, or because they are in situations where they could lose it or get it stolen.

If you go overseas you have travel insurance anyway.

  • Portable valuables cover on your home and contents insurance /thread

  • This is why you shouldn't buy overpriced phones if you have paranoid butterfingers.

Be sure to check your home and content insurance fine print. Allianz has this exclusion:-
    - Cracked screens where there is no other damage

    • Will do. Thanks. Some said ANZ and RACV are better

    • So run it over with your car before you claim?
