Would You Prefer The Cooktop on Kitchen Island?

Hi All,

Due to a constraint I am planning to put our cooktop in our new home (still in design phase) on the kicthen island. Any views? Guess there are pros and cons here but mostly from resale point of view, I wanted to know what do people prefer.

Cooktop beside the wall, where it usually is most of the time.

Depends on the rest of the layout and space available. Show us some context to visualise.

  • It's the Hartley floorplan by DFH. https://www.dennisfamily.com.au/home-designs/hartley/

I wanted to have mine in the kitchen island as well. I personally think its looks modern and classy. But the wife talked me out of it because oil splatter can go around and its easy to clean up when there is a wall against it and I agree.

Your wife is very smart! No matter how good the hood/extraction fan is, oil will still spatter everywhere.

    • Yes, I agree. This is one of the major downside of this concept.

What is the "constraint" on wanting it in the island?
I'd leave it where it is personally. Sink is much more user friendly if you have people sitting at the island. No oil spatter.
You also need to think about a range hood, will that end up making the open plan kitchen feel closed off?

Only time I'd put it in the island would be with one of those extractors that pop up out of the bench but that's all too fancy for me.

    • I was thinking to use the downdraft extractor systems but it is fairly expensive and might not work that effectively like a rangehood does.

having the cooktop on the island would mean the kitchen hood would be there as well.

    • Only thing is that it would create an obstruction to the open plan view. But I guess it would not seem so bad once I get used to it hanging there.

      • It will be pretty loud too. Not sure if one can chat with it switched on.

From a resale perspective if people have Children (or people with Children visiting) there is more chance of Cookware from the Cooktop being knocked off or pulled from a kitchen island. With the conventional against wall design, you can use the Rear Burners or Hotplates or move Cookware to the back out of harms way.

Anyone buying from you could change it (at their expense) but it could deter buyers.

Put the stove on the island for show purposes; cook inside the butlers pantry.

  • I rather have a L shape kitchen without the island.

The island would be good for spectators and filming cooking shows.

Put a teppanyaki grill in there?

I find everyone gathers around my kitchen island when they come to my house, so I probably wouldn’t want the cooktop there. I’d rather have a bigger space for prep at the kitchen island.

  • The kitchen island can be useful to sit at to have breakfast, or to put bowls of snacks on when you have friends over, so wouldn't be great to have the cooktop there and rangehood. And like others said, the wall helps contain oil splatter.

Should be able to move from the fridge to the stove to the sink without crossing a walkway

    • Ah the golden triangle.
This is true but we're talking about swapping 2 points of the triangle, not turning it in to a square.

  • Advantage is if the island looks out on to say family room and parents can watch young kids while cooking.

Serious question, do you generally spend more time prepping ingredients and cleaning up in the sink or over the stove top?

      • This depends if you mostly dry or moist heat cook re cleaning splattered oil, etc. (we are trying to shift to more moist heat cooking).

You havent even finished your home yet, and already talking resale? How long do you intend living there ?

Do people really change homes that often these days? Or buy to live happily ever after?

IMO against the wall is superior in nearly every way.

On the island has too many issues for myself:

    • Hot surfaces near where people sit/stand.
    • Fat spatter all over the island where people sit/stand etc.
    • Fat spatter on floor both sides of island.
    • Range Hood now needs to hang over head (poor aesthetic IMO).
    • No splash back (or difficult to implement) (related to second & third point).
    • Non standard approach may impact resale (possibly).

Agree. Thaks for summing it up nicely.

I agree with against the wall. It is less messy and safer. In our case we have an L shaped kitchen and bought an old workbench which acts an our “Island”. It is on wheels so we can move it around to clean or push it out of the way if we need the space. We have a shelf underneath that we can the bigger cookware on and a drawer for bits we use often. Whatever you do make sure the Island also has storage and a utensil drawer.

  • I think I would be placing it where it is. Thanks everyone for your comments. Very helpful!
