28 Degrees Shopper's Protection and Claiming on Items That Include 'bonuses'

Hey all.

Does anyone have experience buying an item that includes a 'bonus' and then making a claim on a discounted price for the same item without the bonus?

e.g. Samsung sells the S21 with bonus Galaxy Pods.

I'm thinking if it's better to buy the more expensive Samsung from their online store with the bonus, compared to say the education portal which is cheaper but includes less desirable wireless charger.

Even though I'm paying a lot more now, at least I get the Galaxy Pods and can make a larger shoppers protection claim in the future when the price does drop (as long as 28 Degrees doesn't care about the initial bonus I got).

Has anyone tried to make a price protection claim in the past with similar circumstances?

  • I've only succeeded in this when for example I buy the item from JB HI Fi and the bonus itself is a claim through the samsung website. Since it's more of a manufacturors perk. My JB hi fi receipt wouldn't have any mention of the bonus on there.

    • I did exactly this last year with my S20. Bought it from JB Hifi for RRP $1349 and then claimed the Galaxy Buds through the Samsung web site. There is no mention of the buds anywhere on the JB receipt. I was able to successfully price claim the S20 for around $950 since then. They don't even ask for a receipt most of the time. So yes it does work.

  • if it's a bonus by redemption or something that is an incentive to get you to buy (not something that is added to the item) then you can claim.

    damn, that is a bad explanation. If they quote you a price then offer you something to make you buy it, not something to 'throw in with it' then yeah make a claim.

    Damn, still not a good example…

  • I believe if the bonus is via redemption then the price protection claim will be approved but if the bonus is provided with the product at the time of purchase (and listed on the receipt) then you will get a knock back.

  • Thanks for the feedback all. The 'by redemption' part seems to make sense. I guess ultimately, it depends what shows on the receipt you provide.

    I'm looking in the PDS and a few lines are making me feel that my example with a Bonus MAY be potentially rejected or scaled back:

    'The item with the lower price must be exactly the same as the item you bought, including size, colour, quality and condition, make and model number, attachments and accessories and the lower price must occur after the start of your Shopper’s Protection policy'.

    'Price Protection does not cover a lower price: offered as part of a special deal involving other items or benefits'.

      I have a feeling that would mean if you bought a dryer for $500 and you later saw the same model in a Good Guys catalogue stating "Buy this washing machine, get this dryer free", Latitude Finance would not refund you $500.

  • I'm not sure how Samsung process these bonuses. If you can find out, you can give a definite answer.

    Let's look at Apple.

    Currently their back to school promo is buy an iPad/Mac, get a pair of AirPods.

    The invoice will show the following:
    iPad (at full price less the cost of AirPods)
    Airpods (at full price).

    So if the iPad is usually $1000, it will charge you $750. If done through the apple online store (not sure about in person), it will be two separate amounts charged to your credit card. If you returned the iPad and not the AirPods, they would only refund you the $750.

    If you were to then claim a price protection, you would need to claim it against the $750 (although you could do full price, but only $750 (or 75%) was paid for on your cc, therefore only 75% of the difference is refunded.

    Having said that, if on the other hand Samsung charge you the full price, and list the bonus as $0, or by redemption, you could submit a claim for the entire amount.

    The bonus normally won't appear on the invoice and is redeemed separately anyway. You don't even have to mention that the bonus exists.

    I have always got my PP claims in this way.

    I believe that with Samsung, the bonus item is shown as $0 but the item is shown at full price. So on this basis, I assume there should be no problems with claiming the entire amount.

      When I bought an S9+ they had a promo with a free 512GB SD card. The phone was 1049, and the card was worth 349.

      The way they presented it on the receipt was that the combined items were worth 1398, but with a 349 discount (25%).

      It listed the phone as being $849 and the SD card costing $200. Be careful!

      But I was still able to successfully claim two price protections on the phone and in the end paid $745.

      This was from Samsung EPP store, but I don't see why it would be any different from their normal store.

      To be safe I would go with someone other than Samsung.

  • A lot of replies here mentioning that "it's okay, if it's not mentioned on the receipt", but it is not the honest way of doing it. No wonder the company is not offering insurance to the new customers, as there are people on this platform who are abusing the system. Hope they cancel everyone's insurance for good.

    • I don't see a manufacturers bonus claim as having anything to do with the original purchase as it is a completely different component. It's not "thrown in" as a bonus like if the shop said buy this and we throw in extra x. You have to take your receipt and then go claim it through the manufacturer, if you don't you don't get said item.

      • I have often seen that there is a price difference when there is a bonus item. For i.e. OP states "Samsung from their online store with the bonus, compared to say the education portal which is cheaper but includes less desirable wireless charger." - now OP is wanting bonus item as well and then trying to price match against the education portal or cheaper price, when the item is not identical anymore, which is against the terms and conditions. As someone else has mentioned "Price Protection does not cover a lower price: offered as part of a special deal involving other items or benefits", the only reason 28 Degrees will approve it because OP/other buyers will not mention the bonus item or the receipt does not state it clearly.

        Similarly, with the iPads - Apple's prices might be higher but these days they are throwing in AirPods - if I am intentionally purchasing the expensive product and then price match it against the cheaper offering - while being hideous about the bonus item, is intentionally defrauding the system.

        • I understand that but you said a lot of replies, I see 7 replies that are honest and more along the lines of redemption bonuses and 2 that was similar to the example you posted above. Most people are talking about redemption bonuses which are different to bonuses included in the product you are buying.

    • If another 28 Degrees customer bought the same product and was entitled to the free bonus (at the manufacturer's expense, not the retailer or Latitude Finance) but the customer actively chose not to redeem the free bonus then should they be allowed to claim price protection on the original product? What about another customer who bought the original product and intended to claim the free bonus but forgot to do it by the deadline?

      What if you bought a $2000 phone and got free wireless earbuds (RRP $319) and a few months later the phone was $1300 and the earbuds $100? Those free earbuds are starting to look pretty expensive.
