Best Spending/Transaction Account - Student?

Currently just using smart access on Commbank, all my savings are invested, so interest isn't a huge concern but things like cashback? or other benefits that commbank is lacking. Just had to sit in hold for 2 hours because Commbank thought me linking my paypal was suspicious, so not worried about switching atm… Saw the poll thread but there was no real discussion about why each card/bank was voted, and it was somewhat outdated, so opening this for discussion and input.

HSBC has one with 2% back on all paypass purchases

    • That's something I can get behind, wasn't sure if that was still live. Thanks, will await some others suggestions before diving in.

      • Capped at $50 per month, and only valid for purchases under $100.

I don't think a student's going to be spending $2500 per month very often on paypass.

          • @Drakesy: Exactly, so the earnings would be quite low and possibly not a big factor in overall value.

            • @AustriaBargain: That's not the Ozbargain attitude

            • @AustriaBargain: It beats the 0 benefits Commbank is realistically giving me, outside of a nicely designed app and ease of use. Open to hear alternatives though

@dmski: I'd consider NAB so you can keep using the same accounts and cards without fees after you graduate.

Macquarie has the best account in my opinion, no account or international fees and refunded ATM fees. They also have probably the best user interface on their app second to Up Bank and a decent interest rate on their savings account.

I still keep my CommBank account for branch access and cash deposits at ATM's.

  • ING Everyday no stupid atm fees anywhere in the world.

    • only better when overseas. better off macquarie locally.

      • Why? What advantage does it have over ING?

        • don't have to deposit and make 5 payments for free intl purchases and domestic atm rebate. also has push notifications

  • I'd consider Up Bank, NAB, Macquarie Bank, 86400 are options as mentioned above which does not charge a monthly account keeping fees.
PS: you can have a NAB bank account for cash deposits.
