Another day, another fine for Kogan's dodgy marketing methods. I"m sure many of you have felt the pain of buying something from Kogan and automatically being subscribed to their mailing list, then felt the frustration of not being able to easily unsubscribe.

i bought their mobile plan
which one?
Who would have guessed? Bought from Kogan, spammed. Blocked Kogan, then received Dick Smith emails. Blocked then emails from Matt Blatt.
Just block * @ * . *
Interesting, how does that work?
It doesn't. But if it did, it would just block all incoming mail.
@[Deactivated]: This guy unix 's.
for all the dodgy practices people still list deals on Ozbargain …
personally think the store should be banned
Banned would be a bit unfortunate as there are bargains to be had at times - maybe require a layer of moderator scrutiny first?
Yeah baby!
I don't support banning Kogan (and the other stores under their banner). They are popular and successful for a reason.
They are obviously not the only company to be caught out with these types of practices:
Businesses have paid more than $2.1 million over the past 18 months for breaching spam and telemarketing rules. The ACMA has also accepted nine court-enforceable undertakings and issued 10 formal warnings.
I have bought a few things on sale from them, and never had an issue. They do have bargains sometimes
The only issues was once when the photo of a product was incorrect so I got a slightly different model of what I thought I ordered.
I logged a support call and they refunded my money and said keep the productYet people still buy from them..
They need to up these fines, Kogan's marketing department needs a good kick up the backside. It's basically a slap on the wrist for them and then they continue to do it.
The article suggests that Kogan has addressed the matter. Do you have evidence that you cannot unsubscribe?
Bought a $3.95 sim pack last month, was signed up to every email from them under the sun.
Have you unsubscribed?
@GG57: I unsubscribed last week on my secondary email account. From 3-5 emails a day to zero, so far it works.
Only bought the one thing from them about 2 years ago, never again, despicable company.
@GG57: I've unsubscribed from them about 10 times.
Unfortunately i had $500 of free credit from their credit card that i had to burn through.
Every time i purchased something they sign you back up (there's no way to opt out, it was literally a condition of sale).@Drakesy: So, happy to use their free credit.
And they provide you with the opportunity to unsubscribe, which is the compliance.@GG57: No. Email Marketing must be opt in.
No. Email Marketing must be opt in.
Not just that, half the time if I open the emails on my phone you can't even see or load the unsubscribe section properly.
I have to click on something in the email, login to the stupid website and then unsubscribe or delete the account.
Excellent.
KGN $2.2b market cap …what is $310k ?
This is just a cost of doing business for them. Probably works out cheaper and more effective than paying for advertising.
I recently ordered Domino's and said yes to a complimentary $50 Kogan voucher. One button to click "yes" - got the voucher, and then multiple spam emails from them since then.
After seeing this I decided to check out how easy it is to unsubscribe. Clicked on the most recent spam email, had to hunt a bit for the unsubscribe link, but that took me to a page where I could choose to only receive one offer per day one offer per week or unsubscribe from all offers.
However under that radio button list there was a click "here" hyperlink to unsubscribe from "all emails" except transactional ones. I clicked that and they claim they have unsubscribed me. No account and password necessary, so it looks like they have implemented the change mentioned in the article.
My advice to any of you struggling with spam is to get a simplelogin account. Simplelogin lets you create "Aliases" - email addresses to use to sign up to things. These aliases forward emails to your actual email address, and if you reply from your actual email address, the email will be handled via simplelogin and appear to the recipient as coming from the alias. Your real email is never leaked or revealed to anybody, which avoids it appearing on data breach lists that get used for spam, and if one particular alias is causing yoy bother, like for example, you can't figure out how to unsubscribe from an over aggressive kogan, you an simply deactivate the alias with a single toggle switch, so it will no longer forward you emails from that individual alias. Use a different alias for each sign up to ensure you have a hassle free spam management solution anytime.
26th Jan - purchased a product from Kogan (did not explicitly subscribe to marketing emails).
27th January - received a marketing email from Kogan and then promptly unsubscribed.
28th Jan - received 2nd marketing email and unsubscribed again.
29th Jan - third marketing email from Kogan, unsubscribed third time and reported to the ACMA.
Sick of this Kogan spam. The fines have not stopped this behaviour.
Absolutely crazy. First time Kogan user.
Bought an MX Master 3 last Tuesday. Since then, exactly one week later, I have received over 20 emails none of which were related to my order.
Mind you my order is yet to be shopped.
It won’t be due to ship for another week according the order details. Ridiculous! I’ll have a mailbox full of spam by then! Why the hell anyone would pay $12/month for their Kogan First service is beyond me.
It has put me off using them again!!
This is great news, I also had issues trying to get rid of their spammy emails despite unsubscribing!
I don't buy from them often but I'm hoping my recent purchase doesn't trigger another influx of emails.
Thankfully not. Refuse to buy from them after all the stories here about grey market products, poor customer service, fake deals, price gouging, profiteering during pandemic and more. Yet people still do…
