Education Pathway Plan

Hello,

Needing advice on what to study to progress a career inside IT / CyberSecurity.
I recently applied for a Cert 4 in CyberSecurity @ TAFE but i read reviews it's not really good.

What steps should i be taking in order to gain employment as fast as possible being as i am mid age.

What other qualifications and experience do you have?

  • Do you have a bachelor degree already? A graduate certificate, diploma or masters would be better. And you don't have to have an IT background already to do it.

If you don't have a bachelors but do have a few years of IT work history you can use as prior experience to be allowed entry to a graduate program (at least with CSU you can). If you have no IT experience and no bachelors though you won't be able to.

  • What do you do now? Sound like you are in IT already?

  • I don't have any background in IT but i am very IT smart. What i do now is not related to my chosen new career and i don't have any degree. I did enroll into a cert 4 in cyber security but 2nd guessing it because i didn't want to do useless courses which won't get me job ready.

Cyber is a very wide field and you might be able to teach yourself a lot. However if you want to write exploits then a cert might not cut it. Maybe it is more realistic to work your way up from helpdesk to a cybersecurity role than undertake a degree at this point.

      • I actually don't mind studying for 3-4years to gain knowledge into my career. Ideally i will be working part time at my current job and studying full/part time. I figured i would skip the basic cert 2 in IT because i have comfortable skills with computers far more knowledgeable than the average person.

        • Certificates are signals to HR to get you through the screening process. If you can’t get through the screen then it doesn’t matter how much knowledge you have. If others have certs and they are applying for the same jobs then you will not be competitive

          • @Icecold5000: Understood, I need a starting point is this a good cert to pick up?

            • @easylife: No idea. Maybe a good start would be to go through linkedin profiles and see what people is positions you want have in the way of qualifications. I would choose the cheapest and most time effective cert possible if this can get you an interview

    • Yeah I don't think a cert in cyber security will get you anywhere. You'll be competing against people with degrees and postgraduate degrees and experience. Maybe go for a general IT cert and get a helpdesk job, work your way up from there?
