Suggests they're trying to clear stock of iPads and lock people into plans in readiness for iPad 3?
Thoughts?

I think they will continue to sell the iPad 2 at a cheaper price point (maybe 16gb only for $400?), then make only a 32, 64 and MAYBE a 128gb model for the iPad 3. This would allow apple to compete with the 'cheap' tablet market by continuing the iPad 2, and selling the iPad 3 at the same time. I don't think apple will make an iPad nano, or iPad mini, then its too big to be an ipod touch, but too small to be a full tablet. The iPad 3 I believe will be released around February-April 2012, so I'd say wait for that.
According to MacRumors the smaller iPad will be 7.85 inches: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/12/23/this-is-what-a-7-85-inch…
don't think so. http://www.tuaw.com/2012/01/10/on-the-idea-of-a-7-inch-apple…
It's highly unlikely that the iPad3 will be out any time soon. Look to the schedule for the major electronics shows in the US, this is where they are typically announced and any launch dates are announced then, or shortly thereafter.
Don't think there is another major electronics show for a few months so it won't be till after that.
Dear Sir/Madam,
Apple basically never announces products at trade shows. I say basically because I do not know everything, but I have never witnessed them doing so. They typically do not even have a presence at trade shows such as CES www.socialbarrel.com/apple-to-have-bigger-presence-at-ces-20… .
They always host their own events for product announcements.
I believe we will be seeing a retina display iPad 3 suitable for replacing textbooks very soon, possibly 19/1/12. No evidence, just a hunch.
Know your stuff before making it sound so.
As tristanmarsh has said, Apple basically never announces products at trade shows. If anything they announce while trade shows are on and steal the thunder. :D
I doubt that we'll see an iPad 3 as soon as Jan 19, but there could be an announcement considering Apple has announced an event focusing on "education" http://www.tuaw.com/2012/01/11/apple-announces-jan-19-event-… According to this page it'll probably more like a March release http://www.tuaw.com/2012/01/11/next-generation-ipad-rumored-…)
The rumours are rife. But it would appear that maybe they will have the ipad 3 and 2 selling at the same time. Like the iphone 4S 4 and 3G, to give lower entry points. and then maybe if rumours are correct an ipad jnr with 7in screen as a Kindle alternative
