After being cut, the squid is battered and fried using high heat. It can then be garnished with any preferred spices and prepared with marinara sauce, mayonnaise, cocktail sauce, or another favourite dipping sauce.

@Fredfloresjr: Since you asked, I very rarely purchase seafood in restaurants, in part for this reason.
Australia has quite clear country of origin labelling rules and am I not aware of any oceans that are countries.

@Fredfloresjr: Yes - we ask in restraurants the country of origin of their seafood before ordering. It reinforces to the owners that many consumers actually care about the source of what they eat. And when buying seafood to cook ourselves, we only purchase Australian product. Most calamari in the market seems to be comimg from China. We travel quite some distance to purchase local product from a specialist seafood retailer just so we can avoid the imported product.

When it comes to deceptive and misleading advertising, then yes…
I'm sick of businesses following the deceptive practices of 'marketing' people (either directly by paying them, or without thinking by imitating other businesses who do). These insidious people advise businesses constantly deceiving us is wise, to justify their own jobs. The same businesses who claim they want to build up a good reputation with repeat customers. Being deceptive like pricing jacking before markdowns, does NOT endear a business to customers. It IRRITATES us, shifts our focus to ONLY the price because the business has made it clear they don't respect US. After listening to those marketing fools once, businesses have to listen to them again spending $$$ on advertising fighting an ever-losing battle to maintain customer numbers and 'good will'!?

Squid tubes are currently $9.50/kg at Coles. Usually about $12/kg I think.

I bought the calamari strips when I grabbed a few things from one of the previous deals. I cooked some of them up a week ago and they were actually really good: tender and tasty. I've not had the squid tubes from Coles for quite a while, but last time I did it was kind of tough and chewy. It served a purpose (I stuffed it with prawn and chicken, rather than cutting into strips and serving like that) but the calamari strips from Gourmet Foods was certainly better.
I'm not going to comment on whether it's a deal or not, or whether it was sourced sustainably (I'll pay more attention to the source next time) but I thought it was good quality given the price.
Yeah I was just putting it up here because I checked and saw the discount, plus you can do more with tubes.
It's easy to get squid wrong too. I heard a chef say you either cook squid 2 minutes or 2 hours, lol. (Something like that anyway.) I have noticed Coles squid tubes have gotten ~30% smaller. And they used to be $8/kg not long ago, then it went to $9, then the jump. It's a huge jump from 8 to 12 so I stopped buying. Actually I think I stopped because they jumped to $14! Next I noticed no-one was buying them. (They used to sell out constantly but were now getting marked down or thrown out because no-one was buying.) After two times of that my local Coles stopped stocking it because it wasn't selling (well, duh, I wonder why!).
I don't forget rabid price gouging like that so $12 is still too high to win me back. Pity too because I was enjoying making squid rings cause I got that down to a fast easy process. When they jumped to $14/kg I'd just learned how to do that crisscross thing with a knife to make Chinese squid & broccoli, got the sauce just right, timed steamed broccoli just perfect… then $14. Forget that! Everyone must've said the same because the 'no sale' process above began. They've only had them in my local Coles again for a few months. Still crawling off the shelf like a politician from beneath the fridge in the dark.
Selling for 11.90 as recent as 13 January, not a bargain.
