PC Died, Replacing with a No-Frills Casual Use Desktop PC - Recommendations?

Gday

Im a bit out of touch with choosing a new budget PC. Its just for web browsing, email, and youtube really. Have a few ssd drives I can hook up myself. Can anyone tell me what sort of price range and corresponding specs would be reasonable? or PC's theyve bought recently?

My old one had 6gb ram and a 1-point-something dual core processor I think.

Thanks

Look for one of the refurb SFF desktops, should be fast enough for your needs - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/Refurb%20SFF

After my Macbook Pro went in for a service, I started using my Raspberry Pi 4.

Primary use case, Citrix virtual desktop into work.
Secondary use case: Light web surfing.

I've actually decided to sell the MBP and see how long I last on the RPI4! Big difference in capability of course between a $3500 laptop on a $100 SBC.. but ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I may get a NUC or something to run my own home windows desktop in a hypervisor and then just use an iPad Air if I need something portable, VPN into home Windows machine if I need to do anything more generic and grunty. But that is all hypothetical. The RPI4 is doing the job!

Have you considered a tablet, if your said usage is only to those activities?

I daily use this. Great value for $105. Only drawback is not having USB3 (you can add a separate PCI-E card). If you have DDR3 RAM in your old one, you can add them as well (it has 4 RAM slots) along with SSD.
i5 2400 3.1GHz (3.3 GHz boost) is really good even to play some games if you upgrade the GPU. It is a Mini Tower (not SFF) and you can have a full size GPU.
I have upgraded it with 16 GB RAM + 240 GB SSD + GTX1060 and play some old games as well.

    • thanks mate, thats a good option.

noob question: can I add other ssd's to this machine, what would indicate i can compatibly add it onto this sff?

      • If it you have a SATA SSD, it should be compatible with any PC right now if it has spare SATA ports. As I remember anything after 2004-2005 should have a SATA port. You can check the PC's manual and SSD's model as well. I don't think you have a NVM SSD in your old PC by looks of it.
