So there's actually a way to communicate with people without the use of baseball bats and hammers? Sometimes they are useful tools to convey certain feelings.

    • +12

So you know my inlaws then.

      • +2

And now for the feats of strength!

        • +3

          Serenity Now!

    • -1

Lol, I see youā€™re in Melbourne. Did you happen to get yourself fired for smashing plates with a hammer because people were eating meat in the lunch room?

      • +3

I beat my meats with a hammer

        • But do you beat your meat in the lunch room?

  • +11

    Speech isn't violence

    • +25

You're disagreeing with me. That is literal violence because you are making me hear ideas or perspectives that i disagree with our don't want to believe could be true. It sounds like you need this course.

      • +2

        Can't tell if joking?

        • +11

Pretty sure they are just highlighting what the world has come to, and referencing the course topic.

          • +3

@WhyAmICommenting: Pretty sure it's a straw man being used to mock sensitive / empathetic people.

There might be some small number of people who seriously claim to be offended by hearing an opinion differing to their own, but they are vastly outnumbered by the number of people who mock the concept of being offended…

            • +4

@abb: I reckon sensitivity to offense is a mental illness that the media is capitalising on

They're constantly writing articles about something that might offend then adding opinions from people who are offended, people who think that people who are offended by that thing are stupid, etc.

I donā€™t need this course. And you telling me I need this course proves that you actually need this course.

Any deals for courses on good old fashioned violent communication?

    • +19

Have you tried watching daily free to air news?

      • +1

Or most TV shows and movies?

        • -2

          Or republican Twitter feeds?

    • +1

Refer to "how to get impeached twice in a presidency"

    • Yep, that course is called Security guard training

      • +2

You sure there is anything to learn in Victorian security guard training? :) (j/k)

        • Basically , they will teach you the basic 3 best head butts and a finger lock moves. The rest of the course is drinking at the topless bar in the pub next door

  • +5

It's free, not necessarily funded from taxes, so what's the trick? You're giving away your personal data and they sell it to companies? Or just an old-fashioned cult opportunity? (JK, but for reals)

    • +2

Maybe like a philanthropic thing. I dunno

      • -1

More like a devious brain washing thing

  • +7

You mean I can talk to people without punching them in the kidneys every second word? Maybe this course is what I need to finally stop my criminal record from growing!

  • +6

If only the people who really need this would read it.

    • +18

Don't tell me what to do

      • +2

        Let's take it outback

        • +8

Thatā€™s a long way to drive from Melbourne…

        • +1

          Let's take it outback

Would be a great slogan for outback steakhouse

  • +4

    When they say 'non-violent communication', do they mean;
communicating with words instead of fists?
    Or;
are they implying the sociological concept that words can themselves be 'violent'?

    • +6

I suspect itā€™s somewhere in between the two, such as communicating without yelling and throwing a tantrum like a child?

    • More the second. That styles, and content, of communication can inflict hurt.

    • +9

The way Rosenberg defines violence is any communication that would attempt to remove or degrade another persons needs. He views all humans as sharing roughly the same feelings and needs, at our core. Its a way of connecting on a level that we can all relate so we can avoid judgements, criticisms and 'retributive justice' systems.

He has successfully resolved many bloody conflicts involving near genocidal clans and also in more moderate settings for relationships. Even ones spanning decades.

Its worth paying attention to in depth:

      • +2

Thanks for that, unlike most of the comments here, it was actually informative. +1

    • +1

I assume it means cleansing your speech patterns. Instead of punching down on people, or slapping people about with out-dated colloqualisms (which can be pure suicide in a corporate context), it instead focusses on finding less-crazy ways of discussing really serious topics. You'd have to be a bit brain dead not to pick up on this, in my opinion, but you know what happens when an army of people suddenly arrives on your doorstep. You can feel like you're being stalked and buried under a mountain of rules and procedures.

      • Honestly, so much of online communication is degrading and with no other intent than to achieve a ā€œgotchaā€ that empathy should be a required course before anyone is allowed to touch a computer.

Course might be a little late for Donald Trump I guess….

    • +2

Elected to lead, not to read.

      • Lead by greed he did indeed

        • +3

He's the first US President not to take a paycheck. He actually lost money. So… there's that

          • @ttacx: A salary package is more than just a wage.

            • +2

@g1: But it includes a wage. Otherwise how is it a salary.

              • +1

@Dontdoit: Just because Trump didn't take a pay check doesn't mean he and his family have not gained wealth due to the position. You'd need to look at their financial statements but my guess is that he simply choose to take his 'pay' via indirect means.

          • +1

@ttacx: A lot of his meetings were held at his properties and many donations received along the way. He didn't need to receive a wage as the Trump org invoiced the US government for each of the 280 + visits he made to his own resorts.

            https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/politicsā€¦

          • +2

@ttacx: Do you think his businesses did better, or worse during his presidency? How much do you think he would've made from the trillion dollar tax cuts the Trump administration put forward?

  • This is superb violence should be reserved for the physical realm and not the verbal !

  • As someone who frequently engages in violent communication would recommend changing it up a bit with NVC

  • +1

Never thought peace was an option. Must learn more.

  • +2

Good to see all the boomer comedians of OzBargain have flocked to this post lmao.
