Error Code 2000-0511 on Dell G3- The Video Fan Failed to Respond Correctly

Hi everyone, Today while using my Dell G3 on my bed, I heard a small sound and continued to use for around another half an hour and put my laptop to sleep mode. After turning it on, it warned me with this error code 2000-0511, validation code 96055.

I searched online and found some users mentioned to use can of compressed air. At the moment laptop turns on, but I believe the temperature is high and GPU fan speed shows as 0. So my questions are-

1.Is it worth trying the can of compressed air ? if yes, should I just spray it at vents ?
2.Can I keep using it or have to wait until it gets fixed ? My warranty expired two months ago.

Thanks..

If it’s 2 months out of warranty Australian Consumer Law will have you covered. Contact Dell for a resolution citing ACL if they kick up a fuss about being 2 months out of warranty.

I wouldn’t go into detail about using it on your bed though, you might have starved it of cool air. Not familiar with a G3 layout, but laptops sometimes suck cool air through vents on the bottom.

    • Contacted Dell, they did some tests and ordered the part, tech will come to fix it. They said if it’s physically damaged by me I have to pay for it. So have to talk to the tech and see if I avoid paying for it.
      Thanks !

      • If it hasn’t been dropped, squashed, had liquid spilled on it, then you should be fine. Remember, don’t tell them about the bed!

        • What bed 😉
          Cheers !

  • Mindful I have similar problem with the video fan on my xps and it ended up Dell has to replace the motherboard. Make sure you back up your stuff before fixing it.

    • Yeah I saw similar cases online. My laptop have two fans CPU AND GPU. Saw videos of someone replacing the fan.

  • What was the sound? Like a beep or something? Or the sound of something breaking?

If it was a beep, might of been a warning noise of device getting hot.
If it was a breaking noise..most likely a failing fan.

I wouldn't use until fixed, GPU will overheat quickly without a fan.

Try get fixed via ACL with Dell, but if you can't wait (may take some time for them to agree to fix), I'd source a replacement fan via eBay or something and install it and see if that resolves the issue, of it was just the fan motor dying, might be a quick and reasonable cheap fix.

    • Definitely beep/tick sound.

ETA for the part- don’t know 😐
      Cheers !

using my Dell G3 on my bed

Where the vents blocked by a doona or similar?

Possibly stuffed fan wrapped in hair and fluff and God knows what.

Can the cover be removed and the fans inspected?

  • Yes, there is dust/lint blocking the vents.
Dell will send a tech with the part. Should see how it goes..
    Thanks!
