Warranty Issue - Oven Light Globe

The light globe of my oven stopped working. When I removed the cover, I found the globe was completely crushed and the globe socket was probably also melted. I have new spiral globe but the socket won't take it because the threads inside socket are all gone.

I contacted manufacturer as the oven is still under warranty for another 6 months, but they are refusing to help stating I caused the damage so not covered under warranty.

Does anyone can provide advice how to escalate/resolve this matter?

  • Does anyone can provide advice how to escalate/resolve this matter?

    Read this, this, and this.

  • First step is usually threaten to go to ACCC.

When you say spiral globe, you don't mean a compact fluoro do you? Definitely don't use that in your oven. Only use oven globes that are designed to handle the heat.
I'm assuming the faulty globe was the original and not also a compact fluoro, otherwise I can understand why it would have exploded and melted the socket (and in which case you will have a hard time claiming it under warranty)

    • I don't have any idea what type of original globe was used in the oven.

I am trying to replace it following and it matches with specs as per manual i.e. 230V, E14, 25W.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/philips-oven-globe-25w-t25-clear…

      • Ah ok, yeh that's the one. By spiral I guess you meant Edison Screw..

Yeah, you'll just have to persist. Arm yourself with some info from ACCC, if you still don't have any luck contact ACCC and see if they can offer some suggestions, and lodge a complaint.

Often just telling the company you are going to lodge a complaint with ACCC is enough to get them moving. Care to mention who it is you're dealing with?

You could also tackle the issue thru the retailer who sold you the unit. Don't let them fob you off to the manufacturer.

When I removed the cover, I found the globe was completely crushed

Do you mean the glass of the oven globe was already in pieces? That is.. unusual.. normally the filament inside the glass is broken, but not the glass surrounding it.

and the globe socket was probably also melted. I have new spiral globe but the socket won't take it because the threads inside socket are all gone.

If the glass has been "..completely crushed.." you still need to take out the metal base of the old globe before trying to put a new one in. Have you done this? This will tell you if the old globe was a screw-type or bayonet-type.

If "..the socket wont take it because the threads inside socket are all gone.." then you might be trying to use the wrong type of globe, as bayonet sockets don't have any threads to screw into.

    • Following is what it says on the manual

REPLACEMENT OF THE OVEN LIGHT GLOBE

In order to avoid the possibility of an electric shock,
ensure that the appliance is switched off at the isolator
switch, before removing the light globe.
► Set all control knobs to the off position and switch the
oven off at the isolator switch.
► Unscrew the Light Globe cover. Unscrew the blown
      light globe.
► Replace the globe with a new oven globe with the
      following parameters:
      ► Voltage: 230v
      ► Power: 25W
      ► E14 Oven globe
► Screw the Light Globe cover back into place

The cover definitely is Edison design as I needed to screw it anti-clockwise to open it. Based on above, took that the light globe was also Edison type.

      • With due respect, it might be best to have a qualified person take a look. They can tell you exactly what the issue is.
The cover of the light isn't an 'Edison design', it it just a thread.

        • Yes my electrician is coming over for another work so I will get him to also look into it.

The manual clearly saying E14 globe, so isn't it Edison version?

id hazard a guess that the bulb has blown out and left the base of the bulb in the socket. Seen it happen before. Remove with a pair of needle nose pliers. With the power to the oven off obviously….. not sure if that would count as warranty and a broken bulb would be considered a consumable

  • Did you cause the damage?

    • How can I cause the bulb to blast and melt the socket?

I just opened it after the globe won't run on anymore…

  • Do you have the metal base of the old globe out of the oven?

Everyone is guessing this still has to be removed.

A blown bulb is wear and tear, not a warranty item.

  • As many have commented, a globe would not be covered under warranty. However, if I understand your post correctly, the socket into which the globe screws is damaged / melted? If this is the case, definitely covered under warranty. Insist the manufacturer sends a technician to inspect the damage.

I had a similar situation with my car where a globe overheated and melted the socket. Dealer initially tried to fob me off, but eventually caved.

  • With due respect everyone, I can only see E14 25W in Edison version. When it says E14 in the manual, doesn't 'E' stands for Edison?

My electrician is anyways going to look into it when he comes for a separate repair work.

Try posting a photo of the socket and damage. Your descriptions are vague and open to being misunderstood.

  • Can I ask the brand of the appliance please?

  • Update

The manufacturer has agreed to send the technician free of charge to change the parts. Thanks everyone for your advice and guidance!

Mod: please tag it as resolved.

    • What brand is the appliance?

      • Smeg
