How organised is your garage?

I've been procrastinating organising my garage for a couple of weeks now. Maybe some pegboards and some other wall organisation kits.

What is your set up?

We set up two shelving units and are disposing off anything that doesn't fit onto those shelves. The aim is to not have anything on the garage floor.

    • That's the plan! I'm keen on the wall track systems but they get expensive quickly..

Got about 5 sets of shelving units.

It's pretty organised, but I still don't know where anything is.

I can't see where the bloke with the spade is supposed to go.

        Whoa

    • I bought metal shelves from this store. It was the cheapest I could find and they're of good quality.

I looked into building it myself in pine but costs ended up roughly the same.

I have a bunnings workbench that I modified with a large pegboard area at the back by raiding the cupboards that came with it and two sets of heavy duty shelves as above with plastic drawers for storing various categories of items. I was using tubs but the drawers mean not moving a tub to get to one underneath. Plus a toolbox, three pieces, made up of various bargains found along the way.

    • Do you mind posting a pic mate? Sounds like a great setup

  • Full of old boxes that I either need to keep or throw out (due to age). I don't have a garage but the typical apartment carspace.

  • Major cleanout this wk. 5 racks of shelves (2 x large, 3 x small) 1 pile of stuff that is never used but in gd working condition being listed for sale (cheap) & another pile for council clean up. Gained only a little bit of space (assuming everything sells) but everything its now tidy

I highly suggest going against mdf shelves. They're susceptible to moisture and sagging.

    • This!!

I Had some rain overflow into the garage and the mDF shelves were destroyed. Have since moved to all metal ones.

Shelving lines the walls and most of them have airtight plastic tubs on them. You know if you throw anything away you've never used for 10 years, the day after you will suddenly need it and have to buy a new one. I do throw away stuff all the time but sometimes you just know you'll need it again, even if you also know you'll never need it again.

Like any true Ozbargain hoarder, stacked to the brim of old Masters clearance products..

  • How much stuff or space have you got? Organising 2 screwdrivers a drill and a shovel is a lot easier than a full home mechanics/carpentry shop.

My garage is organised chaos. As in, there is a place for almost everything, but I’ve usually got a project or two going and nothing is put away properly. Then there is the office but, the store room and a whole car space covered in tools and parts. Fortunately it was pretty well fitted out by the previous owner with some second hand kitchen cabinetry and other shelving.

I know where my spare transfer cases, spare diff, spare headlights, spare door and most of my tools are, not sure where the workbench went though…

  • One side looks almost like this

The other side is a gym with squat rack treadmill bike etc

The middle will be my dream car when/if I pay off my mortgage one day.

Consider ceiling storage also if you need to maximise space.

and remember unless you live alone any organisation system is only as strong as the most disorganised person using it

  • A mix of some cheap sturdy metal shelving, double stacked tv entertainment units (as used in the 90s for crt tv), office style grey laminate cupboards and random wooden shelves.
