Car Insurance: Adding Drivers for Short Periods?

Been looking at a few insurance quotes recently, and the one im willing to try has a $2000 extra excess for non listed drivers which is fair enough

I called up to clarify and they said im welcome to add nominated drivers even for a day and then to remove them after the trip
its a monthly repayment so it might increase but you only pay until you UN nominate them,

Do people actually do this,?
as far as I can remember all my policies had a anyone can drive it and be covered, unless they are under a certain age. etc. etc. etc.

seems like if I added/deleted a driver everytime someone else drove your car your policy would be 10 pages extra long and might put you in the "high risk" category

  • I don't understand.

Are the extra drivers family or randoms covering a Uber enterprise?

Maybe these non listed could Uber it or Rent a Car with their own insurance?
Ask them for the $2000 excess upfront plus if they will cover a loan car when the worst happens…

    • Not uber drivers or any sort of business
      Completely private

Eg i have a few family members who might use my car when when theirs is being used.
Or I might lend to a friend once in a blue moon

      • Generally you have the primay named driver and can add up to 5 by name as occasionals.
Otherwise look at short-term or temporary insuance policies.

  • Do people actually do this,?

    Yes I do.

A lot easier to just go with a premium insurer with no need to nominate drivers. You might pay a bit more but anyone can drive the car, worth it to me.

  • Is the vehicle Private or Commercial or what?

If you regularly loan to more than one or two drivers get a policy that covers everyone. You don’t want to be caught short if you don’t remember to nominate someone and making lots of changes could make the insurer raise your risk rating and up the premiums. .

You may also find a policy that requires regular drivers to be nominated (family) but still cover other driver with an additional excess. You’d need to make sure that the other driver may incur the extra excess if they drive, or be prepared to pay it yourself.
