Can I Upgrade My GPU? Dell Inspiron 15 7580

Hi all,

Pretty much as the title suggests, I'm not too flash with computers. Managed to change my RAM not too long ago and feel very clever, so now I'm looking to update my GPU.

I currently have a stock "NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) MX150 with 2GB GDDR5 graphics memory". I'm almost purely trying to speed up my photoshop processing using Topaz plugins, but it takes about 15 minutes a photo and task manager hovers around 85% - 95% utilisation of the GPU, so I'm pretty sure that's my bottleneck.

When I was looking for RAM the websites all seemed to have a compatability checker, but I can't seem to find that on the GPU websites. Have I missed it somewhere? And does anyone have brand / model recommendations?

Thanks!

    Most laptops no.

    quick google shows similar question

Re: Can I upgrade my mx 150 to gtx 1050 ti in inspiron 15 7580 laptop
@Shashanktech absolutely not. First, you will find that the GPU is soldered onto the motherboard, so you can't simply remove it.

    • Ah thanks, I was going through places like Nvidea websites searching for compatability tools.

      Shame.

    • By most pharkurnell means 99.99% of laptops have soldered GPU. The only one I can think of is the Alienware m51 which has a modular GPU.

yeah it a no as pharkurnell said

just adding some info, the only laptops with upgradable graphics cards use MXM gpus and because a combination of the form factor and the fact that they dont really bother making low-mid end MXM gpus only those really THICC desktop replacement laptops have MXM gpu slots. So its extremely niche, and form forbidding for 99% of laptops these days.

    • Good to know, thanks for the background info.

Google "external gpu" but I would not personally recommend going down that route. Just letting you know what is out there.

I think external GPU requires specific conditions - like a thunderbolt connector — so he can't go down that route.

      • Without a thunderbolt connector, an external GPU can be connected via the m2 PCIe port but that's really hacky.

      • Not only is thunderbolt 3 or 4 needed, a external monitor is also recommended given that it’s performance will take a hit

Google how to speed up Photoshop on your laptop
Is it possible to have PS use the CPU & Ram rather than the GPU for rendering

Otherwise Maybe an inexpensive desktop would be money better spent unless you need mobility - GPU easily upgradeable
