AV Converter Box Questions, Help!

Driving a 5 year old car that has anOEM DVD player/ screen which takes a 3.5mm jack as source with external RCA+audio female plugs for AV inputs.

Currently my setup is a cheap $60 bucks small AV converter that runs off a USB power from the ciggy plug, and can take USB drive.

Does anyone has any AV converter box to recommend that can be USB powered and take inputs I.E iPad or iPhones or even USB C Samsung phones? Bonus if it can output directly via its own 3.5mm male jack.

So far I haven't come across anything similar on the market.

TIA

I don't believe there's an all-in-one device that achieves what you're after, but how about:

HDMI2AV (although this is what you may already have)
    +
USB C to HDMI Cable, or Lightning to HDMI Cable (although this states that some iOS video apps won't work)

If it were me, I'd go with something like an Amazon Fire Stick or a Xiaomi TV Stick, hotspot it to my phone (or use one of these OTG adapters to connect a flash drive to play local media), and control everything with the remote.

A standard 12V USB Charger should be capable of powering one of the above sticks, but if you're also planning on occasionally using it to charge your phone at the same time, it's probably a good idea to purchase a fast charger instead.

    • I use this setup for my old projector with iphone

      • where did you find the 3.5mm male plug, converter box and the input cable used for the iPhone? am keen to know. thanks

        • I can remember but they are all the same. The iphone connector is always ezcast and the 3.5 is rca ends(has extra connector on doodle end. Plug in random rca to get it to work if no pic-sometimes white rca is picture)

  • Go visit your local Jaycar. They won't be cheap, but if they offer you a solution and it doesn't work, take it back for a refund.

    • I tried bringing the 3.5mm male plug to Jaycar saying it outputs AV + audio, they don't even have a duplicate cable to start with.

      • Lame. My local Jaycar is excellent, going so far as to check stock at office works for me when their cable was too long for my purpose (to be fair, I had my phone out and was about to check myself).

I am an Electrical Engineer. For personal projects like this, when I don't care about delivery time, I will use Aliexpress or deal extreme to find a complete solution. Soo many people shit on China, but their engineers create fit for purpose products for a reasonable cost. I stayed back today screwing around with a 10 million+ dollar system today because of an Australian designed part. I will be ordering replacements for another two Australian designed parts on Monday (they didn't fail like the first but I still need to bypass them to support the first part which isn't as easy to replace).

If you can't find anything searching yourself reply and I will search for you. When I used Ali in August delivery was 6 weeks to three months.

        • That's a good idea suggesting Aliexpress and DX, didn't think about that. Will canvass and hopefully find something suitable. Cheers, and have an awesome weekend!

          • @LurvinOZB: You have a few options to convert to a HDMI source. I would suggest a casting dongle. Then use a HDMI input to RCA output:

            https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000231260924.html?spm=a2g0o…

At $5 a piece I would buy two in different brands as HDMI can be iffy.

I would buy a few new, extra RCA to 3.5mm's of a variety of brands as these fail too.

The linked converter box looks like it could be powered via USB by a cheap car charger.

Your casting dongle would most likely need power too, depending which you choose. If you use something high end you might need a beefy USB car charger.

Some casting tech will only cast video, others will require a wifi access point. It will come down to what supports your current phones. Your tech might also support video out via cable. You would need to check that and purchase a suitable converter to HDMI.

@This Guy: dang, thats a good find and its cheap as chips to roll the dice too! awesome! i think I might setup an account on Aliexpress! Thanks for this mate, appreciate it! Gonna explore more on this gold gem site!

Will click a few more clicks and eventually I would find the RCA 3.5mm cables …
