True/False?? Claim from Hyundai Dealer: "Kia Is a 2 Year Old Hyundai"

I was at a Hyundai dealer today looking at i30 with my sister who is looking for a new car,
The dealer made a claim which sounded odd.

"Hyundai creates a new model eg 2021 i30, then 2 years later, they release the parts and technology to Kia which then gets put in that years Cerato.
So for example, if you buy the 2019 i30 you're getting the same parts as the brand new Cerato.
The engine and technology in this year's Hyundai models won't be in Kias for another 24 month cycle"

As far as I knew, Hyundai and Kia share the same parts and engineering factory in Korea.
Then they have different design, tuning and marketing/sales departments.

I tried to verify this claim online and can't find any evidence that it's even partially true.

Scratching my head and wondering if someone knows for sure if this is TRUE WHATSOVER or SOMEWHAT true or just car salesman bs?

Thanks

  • Do you want to by a Kia or a Hyundai?

Many of the similar spec'd cars for each have the same items/features in them. Buy the one that you like.

    Load of crap.

They come out of the same factory/s in most instances; almost like for like on tech and engineering.

Primarily design and styling differences, minor spec differences and variances in warranty in some cases - but minor.

Drive both. Buy whichever car you actually prefer - they're both Hyundai-owned.

    • The head company is Mobis, not Hyundai.
Kia and Hyundai are a subsidiary of Mobis.

Try another dealer. A decent dealer will tell you the good points of their product not make up stories about other brands.

That would mean a dealer that tells you only what you want to hear.

Hyundai owns the majority of Kia. They share development and technology. Sometimes Kia is used as a test for certain products over Hyundai.

The tech doesn’t filter down LOL. But, the Cerato is about 1 - 2 years away from a new Gen. This is probably to avoid them from competing with each other.

    • It's due mid '21 so it should be in hire fleets Feb/March and in dealership's holding yards March/April if KIA still works the same. KIA is big on not running out of stock.

      • @This Guy - I thought that’s just 2021 model, not the new generation?

I was under the impression next generation is around 2022.

        • I doubt it. They are apparently adding new engines and adaptive. Both require significant engineering. Your source might be referring to the rumored hybrid power train.

IIRC the BD added ~150 metres of glue, thicker windows, a face lift, an ICE update and bolt on active safety tech. But the BD was just a face lift….

That said, your knowledge is probably better than mine.

They are both sub companies of Mobis.

@blank-404 Mobis is a sub company of Hyundai.

      lol

    • You sound like a failed car salesman for one of those unreliable, overpriced European boxes.

No proof offered to back up your fanciful claims……..

      Alright knobzy

  • Sounds like salesman malaka that uneducated would believe

  • No, I don’t think so. Kia also make military equipment, and vehicles, as well as their consumer line of vehicles, so I imagine that they have a degree of innovation, and advancement in the same way Hyundai would. I think Kia make some excellent vehicles.

I drove a work car that was a kia cerato. I'm not a car person, but i'd say it's a great car for the price.

You sales person was trying to use distrust to close you. It is a bad strategy, as now you doubt everything the sales person has said.

KIA and Hyundai have factories next to each other and have discrete factories. Many parts are cross stamped and can be used inter changeably between both brands across many of their models.

Who releases a model first comes down to internal politics. KIA got the stinger platform first, but although it has been in development as far as I know for over 5 years with KIA, Hyundai looks like it will release a Ute as Hyundai already sell commercial vehicles.

The drive terrains in most of their models are stupidly old designs. Their engines seem to only change for emission laws, and as far as I can tell the 2 litre's are a heavily developed licenced Mitsubishi design from the 80's. The first modern gearbox is their 8 speed. It was claimed to reduce emissions, but the competing 8 speed gear boxes were used because that design is stupidly cheap (I have no access to KIA purchasing so I have no idea if they are using the same unit).

The group generally spend money on improving usability, like designing tooling to work on a wider variety of steels so they can turn crumple zones, or improving adhesive design to reduce vibrations and chassis stiffness.

But, all manufacturers do that. Pick the cars you like and go test drive them. And if your sales person tries to plant seeds of distrust in you, just think of how much of a pain in the rear that dealership will be if you ever have any problems and walk out.

IF Hyundai were two years ahead of Kia, why is the Hyundai Warranty 5 years and the Kia is 7 years? lol

    • +1

Hope this doesn’t sound stupid, but if you release new tech you might be less certain as to its warranty life, but two years later you have had more time and experience ironing out issues and placing fixes, so you can be more sure of offering two years more confidence.

      I’m of course only theorising.

      • But that also raises the question of whether the new tech was ready for release.

dealer is full of it. If he lies about that then what else is he telling porkies about?

  • I don't think he meant it literally lol.

  • Go to a KIA dealer and the salesman there will say the opposite!
