Linksys Business LGS308MP PoE+ Smart 8 Port Gigabit Network Switch (130W) $89 + Delivery / Free C&C (RRP $293) @ Umart

1100

Seems like a good price for a smaller sized 8 port POE+ smart switch capable of delivering 130W of POE power. RRP seems inflated, yet this deal still seems decent.

I didn't want to clutter the post with a whole bunch of specifications, so here's a link to the manufacturer's product page:
https://www.linksys.com/au/p/P-LGS308MP/

Delivery to Sydney was $12 which made the total $101 delivered. There are a few stores in QLD available for click and collect. Website states the deal ends in 4 days or while stock lasts.

EDIT 1: Credit to DATApush3r for posting this in the comments. Umart also have the 24 port version (capable of delivering 384W of POE power) for $199 along with some reasonably priced business access points:
https://www.umart.com.au/hotdeals.html?cid=&brand=113&sort=s…

EDIT 2: A friend has one of the 8 port models. I've confirmed with him that it does have an external power brick and that he's never heard a fan running in the unit. Even though I don't have mine yet, I'd go out on a limb and say it's a fanless design.

  • This is fanless switch I take it?

    • has a fan

      • Do you have one of these Krogers? I found a spec sheet on the switch stating N/A next to the fans section, which to me would indicate it has no fans:
        https://downloads.linksys.com.s3.amazonaws.com/downloads/dat…

So not too sure on this one.

        EDIT: Just saw elecpurch's reply.

          hmm weird this doc says

          Fan support
          The switch has one fan.

          https://www.linksys.com/au/support-article?articleNum=140616

          • +1

@Krogers: This one is a bit up in the air. Guess the only way to know for sure is when the switch shows up. I'll post back here upon testing.

            • @johnno21: Damn, I hope not because reason why I am getting is to replace my TP-Link TL-SG2424P which is big and noisy. But, I guess with PoE, its inevitable it may need active cooling?

              • @cloudie9: I'd only expect a fanless option with an external power brick, which is not something I've seen although I haven't gone looking.

                • @DonWilson: This LGS308MP delivers DC power to the switch via an external power brick.

                  • @alvian: Fanless could be an option then, cool. The manual is super generic but mentions the possibility of models not having a fan ("Fan Status—Applicable only to models that have fans."). No software controls for the fan mentioned int he manual so if there is a fan it'll be either always full or auto adjusting.

    • +1

There's no fan on the 8 port (LGS308MP) according to the datasheet (https://downloads.linksys.com.s3.amazonaws.com/downloads/dat…)

    • Only the 24 port model has a fan.

      LGS308MP 8-Port Business Smart Gigabit PoE+ Switch
      Fans: NA

      LGS326MP 26-Port Business Smart Gigabit PoE+ Switch
      Fans: Yes (three 8,200 rpm)

      Datasheet

  • All 8 ports are POE?

    • Looks like it from the photo.

      • -5

but why? you still need one uplink port which DOESNT need to be powered???

        • +1

          Nah you don't.

Dunno why people couldn't say that instead of negging :/

        • +1

What if you're uplink goes to a poe powered router? Or a poe powered wireless bridge?

  • Thanks OP, needed a POE+ switch the old POE I had is being a bit weird …

  • Thanks OP - awesome deal. 8 POE ports on a gigabit managed switch!

Price almost seems too good to be true. I've submitted an order, and will wait and see if they deliver on it.

    • Are all POE switches managed? Are there unmanaged ones?

      • +2

Yes, there are unmanaged poe switches.

      • Sorry for the noob question. What is difference between managed and unmanaged ports?

        • +2

If you're happy with everything on your network talking to everything, an unmanaged switch will do what you need. If you want the option of splitting up your network then you need a managed one.

Businesses often need managed switches, it can be handy for home users as well eg to section off insecure IoT services from the rest of the network.

          • @BenR31415: Thanks. My existing one is netgear unmanaged one and though I am fairly technical, I think I am fine with devices talking to everything else.

            • +3

@EnALup: If you are technical I would strongly advise having your IoT devices ("smart" devices, lightbulbs, etc) on a different network than your home server/Synology for example. You can use an Untangle firewall (of pfSense if you are more technical) to manage the traffic in and out.
Too many too vulnerable devices to keep an eye on each of them individually.

              • @tm001: I have used pfsense but that is too hard for me to deploy properly. The forum is not really kind to noobs. I now use Sophos free firewall for home use. Much better although I have not explored all bells and whistles.

  • Did someone say link aggregation.. tempted but moving to 10 gig network at home.

    • I'm keen to move to 10g too but it's still not as mainstream as it should be yet! What gear are you looking at getting?

    • I believe LACP aggregation splits traffic by MAC address, not whichever port is ready to transmit, so you won't necessarily get a speed boost between two hosts.

There's some jiggery-pokery you can do on Windows to get it to use multiple connections for file sharing so that it will take advantage of having multiple ports available, but I don't know the details.

Source: I set it up on my UnRAID server, and didn't get the 2x Gigabit speed boost I was looking for.

  • I am looking at getting a 24 port POE+ switch, is it worth getting a used managed router and just use it as a unmanaged switch? There are used cisco POE routers being sold for around $100 occasionally. I might not need all 24 ports but I would definitely need more than 8.

    • Are you in VIC? i have one spare PoE (doesn't support PoE+) which you may find it useful for your project.
PM me if you are interested.

  • Awesome price for a compact 8-Port 130W POE Switch without fan! Grabbed a few. Cheers OP!

    • It looks to have one fan though, but no information on how loud it is.

  • Will this work with Ubiquiti ac pro? Possible setup as follows.

NBN router/modem-> this switch -> ubiquiti ac pro

    • +1

      Yes it should.

    • The NBN device isn't a router though afaik. So it would be:
NBN device > router/modem-> this switch -> ubiquiti ac pro

      • Sorry that’s what I mean, I should have said NBN device (FTTH) and then router/modem (AirPort Extreme).

  • Are these PoE ports auto sensing i.e. can I connect both PoE devices like the Unifi AP and a regular non-PoE device like a printer (or similar ethernet based device) together? I would rather buy this than buy a 4-port PoE switch just for Unifi APs and a regular switch separately for the other devices.

    Appreciate any help.

    • +2

      Yes

      • Great; thanks for confirming. Ordered 2.

  • Warranty and Support:
    Limited Lifetime (most countries)
France, Germany and Spain – 5 year warranty
Australia and New Zealand – 2 year warranty

    Strange business decision.

Also strange that it seems not rack-mountable despite what Linksys claims.

    • +1

      EU has stronger consumer laws.

      • -2

If I buy this in say Mozambique, I get lifetime warranty. Mozambique has stronger consumer laws than ANZ?

      • +1

Funnily in Australia you could probably go them for 5 years of warranty anyway, because they offer a 5 year warranty somewhere, the expectation is that it would last 5 years makes sense.

But that would be a fight you'd have to take to small claims court or something.

    • Probably supports it, but maybe this SKU doesn’t come supplied with the ears?

      • I can't see mounting holes for the rabbit ears on the side of the case.

  • -4

Hey guys, this looks like a really good deal.
But I have no idea what a Gigabit Network Switch does. Should I still get one?

EDIT: I own a gaming PC. What I can use this switch for?

  • Thanks OP! Grabbed one.

  • From the website: https://www.linksys.com/cz/support-article?articleNum=140427…

    1. Does it have fan support?

Yes. The switch has one fan. Fan failure is indicated by a blinking yellow SYSTEM light.

    • Only the 24 port model has a fan.

      LGS308MP 8-Port Business Smart Gigabit PoE+ Switch
      Fans: NA

      LGS326MP 26-Port Business Smart Gigabit PoE+ Switch
      Fans: Yes (three 8,200 rpm)

      Datasheet

  • Bought 3. Thanks OP

  • +7

They have a 24 port POE+ switch and access points as well:
    https://www.umart.com.au/hotdeals.html?cid=&brand=113&sort=s…

    • +2

Wanted more ports, so got this one.

    • +1

I’m tempted to replace my 2 AirPort Extreme with this setup seeing that it supports 802.11r.

Airport exteme with wifi turned off -> this switch -> linksys ac1750 (2x) which offers one wifi ssid. This is definitely cheaper than ubiquiti.

      • +1

Ubiquiti UniFi Managed PoE+ 24 Port Gigabit Switch with 2 SFP Ports
        Ubiquiti Networks UAP-AC-PRO-5 802.11ac Dual-Radio Access Point - 5 Pack
        Total: $1,698.00

Linksys Business 24 Port PoE+ Smart Gigabit Network Switch (LGS326MP)
Linksys Business LAPAC1750C AC1750 Dual Band Cloud Wireless Access Point x 5
        Total: $644.00

So you are saving about $1,054 for a 5 pack of APs and a switch.
If you only wanted 2x APs and the switch then you'd save like $491 going with Linksys vs Ubiquity.

        • +2

          Thanks.

I only need two AP and I think I can live with one AP as a start if I place it in the middle room. This one is also on sale for ac2600 for link aggregation https://www.pclan.com.au/linksys-lapac2600-au-business-pro-a…

          • @xorprime: thks grabbed 2 APs, that’s my house sorted.

          • +1

@xorprime: Yeah, thank you very much for that link! I initially ordered the AC1700 but canceled that, kept the 24 port switch order with Umart and got the AC2600 with PCLAN. Much better deal with 4x4 MU-MIMO and AC2600.

        • thanks - anything equivalent to the Unifi dream machine as well? Or is it ok to just hook up the switch + 1 x access point to UDM? Am I losing anything by going this route?

  • +1

    Damn, I need 2 x 4 port POE switches.
Maybe I can cut this one in half

    • +1

Absolutely, just be aware that you'll only get half the total amperage per half.

  • $19 delivery to Vic!? Excessive.

    • $12 for me in 3135

      • $25 to 3184 ….very expensive courier from PC Lan.

        • PC Lan also have the Linksys LAPAC2600 listed on their eBay store for $149 including free express delivery if you are eBay Plus member (and free returns too, i.e. effective flat rate $10 delivery per unit

  • Thanks OP. This is a great deal for a 8 port POE switch. Got one.

  • Thanks OP, bought 2 … not really sure why but I'll find a use for it somewhere. ;)

  • Why does this have to be business, I can use this personally too… 😛

  • What can I improve in my home network using this switch? I have non POE switches, to connect various devices.

    • POE switch wont help you improve your network, only helps with providing power to devices that support it, or providing power to hard to reach devices. If you have a bad wifi, you can combine use this to power the access point from the deal posted by @DATApush3r above. You can place the access point to an area with poor wifi coverage

      • Thanks. Looks like not for me in that case. My whole house is wired and I had some old modems lying around which I converted to access points.

  • Thanks OP. Got one

  • Great deal, thanks for posting!

  • +1

Pretty neat, emulator for the HTTP based UI for the 24 port version.

  • +1

FML. Went out of stock as I was just doing a checkout for 2 units lol..
Anyone knows how loud the 24-port model is? Planning to put it in the study that doubles-up as guest room.. Would it be too loud?
Some googling says that it's about 30dB (3 fans), which is "supposed" to be the equivalent of whisper/quiet library.

    • +1

      It’s in stock right now

      • Yep, looks like its back in stock.

  • I had a Linksys 48 port rack switch once. It was hard to describe just how crap it was. Cisco well and truly went out of their way to make sure it didn't complete with their cisco kit

  • Thanks! Purchased 24 port version for upcoming security camera install.

  • Nice one. Few other good deals there at the mo too. Thanks!

  • Out of stock again.

  • Got the 24 port. Going to go in a rack at the top of the pantry. Hope it isn't overly noisy

  • +1

So a bit late but picked mine up. 8 port is definitely no fan.

  • +1

Yes, like all other reports these little beauties are 100% Fanless!!
