Washers and Dryers More Expensive These Days?

I've been looking at washers and dryers and comparing to prices in the past and it seems prices are a fair bit higher these days across the board compared to say a year ago even though the models are getting older.

Given the aud is high, I can't see any reason unless it's something strange to do with covid.

Am I imagining this or are prices higher right now? And if so, any ideas why?

Out of control global demand and restricted supply: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=demand+su…

  • I am looking for a Bosch Series 8 WAW28460AU which based on this site has gone for less than $900 in the past and its $1,200 at the moment.

    • Was keen on this one too but prices are crazy right now it seems

      • If i can find it under $1,000 I will get it. Made in Germany I believe

        • I have a quote for $1,149 for this model - WAW28420AU (I believe it's 9kg as compared to the one you wanted which is 8kg) from E&S. Perhaps you can check with them to see what is their best price.

@greenfairy: I meant I wanted a German made Bosch series 8, happy with 9kg too. I find the models really confusing, aside from your one (WAW28420AU) there is also 9kg models WAW28620AU and WAW28440AU. FYI the 440 is $1140 at Good Guys Commercial if you have it and I suspect 440 vs 420 means its slightly better in some way?

EDIT: Just did a bit more research, seems the 620 has i-dos, still cant figure out the difference between the 440 and 420.

EDIT2: Seems the 440 is Good Guys exclusive and it and the 420 are identical except for 440 apparently has the Allergy Plus programme and 420 doesnt.

  • International freight costs are way up.

  • When other countries are relatively richer, they have afford to pay more for freight, which drives up the price of freight for everyone else because there's only so many airports and container ships in the world.

  • I have the WAW28620AU. Now that I've used the i-DOS feature, I can honestly say I can never go back to putting in laundry liquid myself. It's just so much easier and you really do notice how much longer a bottle of detergent lasts you. It cleans very well and is quiet.
My only issue with it (and I've read several others mentioning this in online reviews) is how hard/crispy towels are after they dry. No matter how temperature it is washed in, no matter the spin speed or amount of fabric softener, they still come out this way. The manufacturer was apparently unaware and had never heard of this issue (hard to believe).

Nonetheless, it's a great washing machine. Should it ever die, I'll probably go for an ASKO solely based on the way they look and because they have no rubber and plastic outside parts like the Bosch.

Let me know if you have any questions about the machine.

    • Is there any theory as to why the machine makes towels hard?

      • I never really found this out to be honest. If you do happen to find out, please report back! :)

        • Try turning down the spin speed, I find 1000 RRP means less crunchy towels.

    • Tempting for the extra $300 or so.

How much did you pay for it?

      • I paid $1450 for mine.

    • I have this machine and agree with you that it's a great machine especially the iDOS. Gets a very high WAF.

Re towels, we dry our towels in the dryer after washing. They always come out soft and fluffy. We don't use fabric softener.

  • Washer/dryer combos are problematic at the best of times, I would avoid and stick to single units.
