DSL being decommissioned - NBN not yet available

I am facing an annoying predicament for my retail business and wondering if anyone had any ideas.

I currently have an ADSL phone/internet plan with TPG and have received a disconnection notice stating TPG is decommissioning their ADSL network in the area on 1 Feb. I received this in December and at that time the shopping centre my business is located in had an NBN connection date of 31 Dec. However this has now been delayed with no ETA provided. I have spoken with TPG and 1 Feb is still a firm disconnection date despite this.

The only provider I have been able to find that seems to be able to offer anything at the address is Telstra via their ADSL network. It is essential for me to keep the business phone number, however in order to port the phone number, it says I need to contact them (which is a nightmare in itself) to sign up rather than sign up online. When I have finally been able to contact them they are unable to locate my business address in whatever database they are looking at. However if I elect not to port the number it allows me to go through the sign up process online and can find my address no issues (WTF Telstra?)

Telstra has submitted a request to add the address to the database however knowing Telstra this will neither be a quick nor smooth process and I am not confident I will be able to be connected by the end of the month.

Does anyone have any other ideas here? Are there any ISPs that still resell Telstra ADSL? I just need something to hold me over until NBN is connected.

This is really strange. Usually, the copper network should only be disconnected 18 months after NBN is available for your address. Put the address of the premises into the address checker at https://www.nbnco.com.au/ and see what the technology type is, whether nbn is available and what the actual disconnection date for the cooper network is.

    • Yeah, this is all that comes up: Link I suspect NBN has been long been rolled out to all the surrounding residential areas just not to our small shopping centre which is why TPG no longer see the need to maintain their ADSL network. It seems like Telstra will allow me to join up to their ADSL network if they could locate my address in their database so I don't think the actual copper network is being disconnected as yet.

I had this happen…it was super irritating! I had to switch over to a 4G plan for a while, luckily it was all sorted in a couple months. But yeah, totally sucky

I would also make sure you confirm with TPG that they will cancel your account and not charge you anymore. I kept getting charged by Dodo, who then refused to refund me the money.

    • Sure is super irritating! I was thinking about mobile internet, but my problem is how do I keep my phone number and lack of data? Someone on WP has suggested a VOIP solution so I'm going to start looking into how that would work.

My other problem is the internet at the store is pretty much used purely for streaming video all day, 7 days a week so unlimited data is important which I'm not sure mobile internet would cater for?

Super weird how TPG doesn't want your business. I'd probably start making arrangements now in case you get cut off and lose the number as getting these things sorted/ported can take a few weeks.. You should port it to a VOIP provider. I've used Crazytel and Mynetfone. If you make no outgoing calls at all, you can probably go on a plan with no or very little monthly fees and just pay a small amount for the number every month/year.

For data, perhaps TPG's Felix might be useful: https://felixmobile.com.au/ (unlimited data capped at 20Mbps).

Telstra is an absolute nightmare! Im trying to sign up to their adsl network (no nbn and sketchy mobile) and it has been nothing but trouble. the right arm does not know the left arm exists so trying to contact them then get things connected is just PAINFUL!!!

How on earth this company is still in business is astounding. Pity they are the only ones still connecting adsl services… i certainly would not be signing up with them if there were any other alternatives!

  • I will PM you. I can help you out with the phones. I am sure we can work something out for the internet too.

  • I read somewhere that Optus is doing fixed wireless, have you looked into that?
Also re the phone, I don't know if this is possible, but can you port your landline number to a mobile Sim?
