These are now only 2 layers. So no deal imo.

    • +3

The Viro Block always was 2 layer.

      It's 2 layers plus V-block

I have both the originals and these

  • +3

Are these the masks everyone was saying was terrible last time?

    • +9

I believe so. Nothing more than a big company designing something in an afternoon and calling it finished.

      • +8

More like picked something from a catalogue and stuck a brand on it.

    • +2

Yes, they're horrible. Got given some free with an order mid last year and have never used them. Dispoable ones are better quality and more comfortable.

    • I bought a 5 Pack last time and thought they are pretty good. More comfortable. At least on my head. Doesn't get as hot when breathing either like some disposable masks.

      • You're supposed to wear them on your face.

  • +1

Are the Uniqlo ones any good (3pk $20)? All the companies are just trying to profiteer off the pandemic. Stupid prices for a little bit of cloth..

    • +7

Definitely get the Uniqlo masks (comes in 3 sizes) - they are heaps more comfortable and much easier to breath than the Bonds ones. I also tried the Cotton On masks, but the Uniqlo are still the best I've tried.

      • +2

Another vote for the Uniqlo mask in terms of comfort. The disposable ones always give me an itchy on the facial skin. However for some reason the disposable ones tend to breathe easier (nothing to do with quality as I blew through it and it doesn't go through).

      • I concur with this assessment.

Got the bonds ones, were uncomfortable. Have the Uniqlo ones, heaps better.

      • What’s wrong with the cotton on ones? I ordered a few from them.

        • +1

I found with the Cotton On ones it was difficult to breath and also after putting them through the wash they shrunk a bit so now they are too tight and uncomfortable

    • Uniqlo ones are overated.

      No nose covering.

      Feels Tighter than disposable ones.

      • +2

Buy the right size. The only problem is that even L may not fit larger heads.

    • Theyre soft and comfy, a bit small and slightly tight at first but actually stretched a bit after a few washes now perfect.

Doesn't work well with glasses (bonds one do a better job not fogging the glasses up)

  • +7

    Face undies?

    • +1

You took the words right out of my mouth

      • +1

Get your face out of those undies

  • I know some people re use this kind of cotton mask for months, and not even replace the inner layer.

    • +14

      same with the undies

      • Saves on washing powder - bargain!

      • +3

These get 4 uses to a wash like undies, right?

  • thanks OP, bought 2

  • +6

These are great. I’ve used these all year (replacing after 20 washes) with no issues. The terrible ones people are referring to are the completely different ones they released a few months ago after these Viroblock masks had sold out. I was given 2 for free in my order and after one use; never again! Huge sizing and not comfy at all.

    • +3

Yeah the inferior masks were the 3 layer ones. Just avoid them. The masks in this deal is 2 layer and much better quality.

    • Yeah I bought some right before lockdown started as masks were selling out.

I have Uniqlo ones as well. The first Viroblock ones are pretty comfy, only 1 size though, and only good for 20 uses (they come with little cards to keep track).

I officially used up 1 mask.

The uniqlo ones are softer but IMO the layers come apart and it annoys the crap out of me if I'm exercising or walking around the shops quickly.

  • now that's a good deal

  • +1

Strange, I'm signed in but it's trying to charge me $5.95 shipping still. Usually it's free.

EDIT: Went back and tried again, now $0 shipping. Odd.

    Here we go again…
Seriously guys especially Sydney which I don't think will keep masks as long as Melbourne, just spend the same amount on many, many actual rated masks like those Bunnings KN95 ones (I think ones like 3M are again better but hey, just being realistic about price/availability). Get some actual protection not this cotton fabric gimmick stuff. Go "proper", or go cheap like those other deals.
For those $20 masks which beats me people loved, you can buy enough "once-use" masks to rotate through one a day and have the other in the sun for a whole week if you really think it's got COVID on it.

Mask is mandatory mostly to stop unaware covid positive patients spreading covid. It do not give much protection if you are near someone with covid not wearing mask as you can get infection through your eyes too. Only N95 is not going to make much difference compared to these imo.

Note- Once use mask are for one use. U put in on and properly dispose without touching the mask outside part. Not for taking off and on throughout the day. Again for stopping the spread for unaware covid patients it works fine not so much as a protection.

      • -2

Evidence that eyes are the main source of infection? Guess those nurses complaining about only having surgical masks are stupid then?

Yes I realise a "cheap" KN95 is unlikely to be as good as a branded N95 as I mentioned but at least it's got stuff it's meant to certified against, not just made up fabric protection devices. Clearly you didn't bother to even read the link either. Only people like nurses or tradies who really run the masks all day are once off. Tossing one after a couple hours at Bunnings or out in the garden is the biggest waste ever.

        • +1

Eyes are one of the route of infection not the main. N95 mask ( Properly fit tested) provide better protection specifically against aerosolized form of the virus which can occur in hospital under various scenarios ( Intubation , positive pressure etc). For regular use and reduce spread any mask you can wear comfortably should provide good protection specifically if the person next you is also wearing one.

Regarding one use its not about waste its about safety. Same as one use gloves.

          • -1

@Hellcat: So going back to my original point then if single use is someone's main priority then these fabric masks don't meet that requirement either. Yet more expensive than the other options.

    • +6

Masks with vents are completely inappropriate for this covid scenario. We're trying to ensure covid doesn't spread out from infected people, not protect your respiratory tract from pm2 5 particulates. Masks with vents funnel your breath (and everything in it) into a small opening and projects it out in a concentrated stream. All that covid spittle will stream out at a higher velocity and infect everyone near you. Please wear a mask that stops outward spread and avoid standing next to anyone wearing a vented mask.

      • -1

Then get one without a vent. You haven't seen many types of certified masks have you or even the one I used as the main example?
Either way doesn't make a $5 piece of cloth any better value. It's like falling for a fake marketing chemical that beauty companies come up with for their products.

This whole thing about face masks to prevent spread only really came about because they didn't want people buying up the limited supply of masks that gave proper protection to the wearer.

  • I thought 3 layers ones are the recommended ones.

  • +3

    Waiting for the crotchless version.

  • So what is HeiQ Viroblock?

  • Ordered 2 for free with $10 b’day voucher

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/173503

  • These were very, very poor quality & went rapidly in the bin. My advice is to avoid them at all costs.

  • Anyone know or have recommendations for a XL mask?
Tried a stack of large ones from various places like Uniqlo, chemist warehouse etc but can’t find a reusable that fits!
