Doesn't seem to be available on the US site…

I just bought 1984 physical version to keep as collection 😂

    • hard bound ? I need one too. where did you buy?

      • +3

soft cover. ah just some bookstore that was going to close down because of covid. it was on closing down sales. I am sure you can get it online somewhere.

    • +7

Nice, I am planning to get one too now that you mention it.

It a bit crazy that there some similarities in the book and what is happening now that people dismiss.

      • +7

I wasn't a great fan of the book… But I think no matter the era we'll always find similarities to what is currently happening.. Which in itself is something that makes it special.

        • +16

True. Unfortunately this time it’s worse.

People in masses now don’t even see propaganda lies that is feed to them. They rather trust the outright fake summaries of reporter event or thesis (theory) dress as scientific fact instead of real trial/event showing the opposite. Everyone now now an expert without reading any medical journal because repetition of media is easier to learn from.

Big brother, changing of history, teletube, 2+2=5 and all such idea is being applied.

          • +3

@shoppingbag: Yeh it's the downside of the internet, it can propagate fake news and propaganda just as easily as legitimate news.

I do have to say being an ethnic (all be it, way more aussie now loll) we tend to not be surprised by this stuff hahahaha… It's expected from our governments and will continue to the end of time…

            • +4

@scud70: I might be drag into the minister of love building since I spoke my mind. I should tell you that I love you all before I am drag into room 101

Edit: corporate sponsor media/news in just as bad as the internet. Btw, all bets is off if it involves rats in room 101.

              • +1

@shoppingbag: Well you shouldn't have been such a thought criminal… No rats in modern room 101.. Just endless streaming of reaction videos…

                I'll take the rats lol

          • +3

@shoppingbag: Not sure if this is what you’re saying but it’s a bit of a generalisation to assume that libertarians and those against big governmental control hold all sources of truth. In fact, the anti-lockdown anti-mask crowd are just as guilty, if not moreso of blindly making statements and assertions with little scientific merit or conveniently handpicking statistics. And it’s typically these types that love to call others sheep or state that we need to take the red pill.

            • +1

@Optimusprimetime: You are absolutely right, lots of different ways to look at it though, freedom of speech, blatant stupidity for sake of having a 'voice', governments allowing such crud to misdirect while they do something else quietly… In the end just the sheer speed of how crap from either 'side' propagate is unprecedented….

Scary for my kids though… Puts the TV version of the crap used against my generation to shame loll

            • @Optimusprimetime: Yes, there is some that will be against gov & big pharmaceutical just because it against the big establishment. Establishment tend to have all the money and power so it easy for people to see anything they do is wrong. The majority of people just don’t have the expertise to clarify their stance.

Science isn’t always as exact as people think it is. If you want to talk about mask, lockdown and etc, it’s a good idea to visit aapsonline.org. Read up on who they are, their credentials and see if there is any truth in the information they provide and their free medical journals they offer. No way will I send random people on my super secret conspiracy source…

      • +1

think that if one year ago you were told government would track every one and force them to wear mask, you would laugh your head off. in the last century horror sci-fi movies, government as to force a sensor into people's body to monitor them, now everyone voluntarily carries multiple sensors, so big brother(s) (government, big companies, hackers…) can easily to get their every details, what a joke.

I always find it surprising how many parallels can be drawn from Animal Farm with current or recent events. Scarily prescient for its time.

    • Yes, Animal Farm is a much more relevant reflection on the level of gaslighting that has happened this year especially during T***p's reign.

1984 is what China is right now in real life. Also Newspeak is happening especially with what the the government is trying to do with gender neutral terms.

Down and out in Paris and London is a real eye-opener - Orwell (despite being perfectly well off) went to Paris and lived in doss-houses for a couple of years, doing menial jobs and living off his wits. The kind of place where everyone is grafting for the next drink / smoke / screw all the time. Pawning your overcoat on Monday to buy drink (mostly) and food (sometimes), shivering through the week, and then buying your coat back on pay-day.

      • +2

I'd also recommend Homage to Catalonia. It's an account of Orwell's time fighting for the Communists in the Spanish Civil War. His writing manages to capture the futility of the entire exercise in a way that you just have to laugh sometimes.

Will this copy get removed from our accounts without our permission after we buy it?

    • Please explain.

      • Censorship

Removal of information instead of debating of different view is more the norm now. It’s censorship with one side having their voice heard and creating a narrative on why the silence side got it wrong.

Fake in what way?… To what end (from an Australian government perspective)… To control people and sh*t on the economy? To reduce older age population (which is totally failing here in Aus if that's the plan)..?

I won't argue for or against how the virus came to be… But it's fake comments make no sense to me…

      Edit: Neg not from me..

Hi good question, and while I'm not the poster you are addressing, I've been trying to pull together an answer which doesn't sound crazy, as I know this is what most people think. So to answer your questions in short:

        "Fake in what way?"
        1) Testing and recording methodology leads to deception by media or interested parties, and in turn an inappropriate policy response, for example:
        - 2% (15/682) of attributed deaths occurred in those under 50. Of those deaths, 72.7% had co-morbidity.
        - Should we be locking up a whole nation as a result, arresting the economy and all the bad things that go with it? Or should we ask people over 50 who are at risk to stay indoors?
        - Just yesterday we had 60,000 tests yielding 10 actual cases, with swab samples used to determine the presence of the virus with no notion of activity or severity. Are we closing our borders for this?
        - Policy response doesn't properly consider externalities like mental health, reduced health facilities leading to lack of treatment for other issues, etc.
        - No-one likes doing the mathematics of death which I believe is why policy response is so severe. I think Australia is getting better at this however.

        https://twitter.com/NSWHealth/status/1345160004295217152

        "To what end?"
        2) Varied ends, not all of which are aligned:
        - It's not controversial to say that media want to keep a 24/7 new cycle going for clicks and money, and feeding hype is a great way to do this. Media informs public opinion.
        - Multi-national businesses have benefited greatly from COVID and would likely want to continue this trend.
        - There are groups who control the world economy who wish to push their various agendas which people are not comfortable with.
        - People including myself object these agendas to technocratic governance, marxist critical theory taught as "diversity and inclusion", and globalisation

you miss the fact it is so infectious but not quite so deadly that it wont burn itself out like ebola. if it wasnt halted at all it would have killed of 2-5% of the population. they also suspect there are longer term health issues from getting covid as well

          • +1

@bgbrendan: If it's not killing 2% to 5% of the population who are getting it, who arguably are a random group, why would it kill a higher percentage if more people got it?

          • -1

            @bgbrendan: Some questions
            - What's the 2-5% based on and what is your reference for this, can you please include a link?
            - What are these longer term health issues and are these significantly different from a comparable disease?

            Cheers

SO if it is fake, what's causing the morgues to overflow?

          https://www.9news.com.au/world/us-coronavirus--morgues-and-h…

This conspiracy theory JUNK has to stop. The reason this kind of conspiracy theory doesn't work is that it requires a VERY large number of unrelated parties to be corrupt or coerced into silence. Think about how many morticians there are world wide in different countries. Trying to co-ordinate them to agree on anything would be a mammoth task. And they aren't the only group you'd have to force into submission. It's the same reason it makes no sense for the moon landing to be a hoax or the earth to be flat, or that climate change scientists are all conspiring.

Btw businesses can and have behaved poorly, and this doesn't require a conspiracy. Plenty of this on record.

Stop making up nonsense and start paying attention to the actual facts.

          • -3

@syousef: That's a strawman, unrelated to anything I said. It seems you are the one pedaling conspiracies, as the article you linked does not actually contain any information showing that morgues are overflowing, just that they are busy. Cheers

            • +1

@meowbert: Majority here don’t like anything that goes against what they believe it true. People will always ask the “why” so they can rip through any conspiracy theory you have.

The mountain of “experts” the media bombarded us and the continual retraining of “effectiveness on mask” will make people believe their educated view point.

Instead of disputing with others, why not read some medical journals and non-gov/pharma establishment info. Even senate hearing on early treatment for covid is very informative.

@shoppingbag: Hi, all of the links and statistics I quoted were from the Australian Government or World Economic Forum, nothing I have said is conspiracy.

Thanks for the links I'll have a look.

                • +1

@meowbert: When you put out possible agenda/proposed reasons to the action is where people will fight against you. Since we aren’t mind reader, or at lease I hope no one can read my mind.

I have very little trust on most governments body myself.

There is lots of corruption, where even the two most influential and prominent medical journals have be caught releasing falsified medical studies on covid 19 treatment. Ours and many other government around the world still base our response on those proven retracted articles.

The number of medical articles that only provide a thesis (only theory) for a response of covid 19 is used by government as medical/scientific certainty. Logical fallacy where the chain of facts made to proven a false statement are published. Computer modelling is used to definitely rule out treatments which has later prove to be very effective is still being denied to many. Because of that, I am more cautious when reading any publish information from reputable source.

People will fight you with tooth and nail because it hard to accept the disconnect between their known truth and what a small minority is saying. It like you claiming that their religious beliefs and all those who practice it is wrong base on your interpretation of the reasoning behind the action.

Not that I am disagreeing with you. Just pointing out where people have a stance on your take. While for mine, they will just claim it outright lies propagated to hinder a unified response to a medical crisis with censorship being the correct response.

Edit: I will retract everything I say and am willing to feed you to the wolves rats if I am drag into room 101!!!!

            • @meowbert: Your argument is a conspiracy theory that the virus is "fake". There is no straw man here. I showed how a subset of conspiracy theories including the one you put forward isn't at all likely. You might want to familiarize yourself with the term "straw man" before you use it.

I'm not going to argue further with you because it's very clear to me that you will dismiss or twist any evidence I provide that contradicts your pre-conceived notion of what is true, as you just have. This isn't my first rodeo, and I don't see a point in wasting my time.

So my final word is this: Your assertion that the virus is fake is insulting to every person who loses a loved one, every person who is sick, every loved one affected, every person who treats them, every person involved in trying to contain the spread or help create a vaccine. You really need to take a good look at yourself and what you allow yourself to believe. You're basically calling all of these people liars and fools.

              • -1

@syousef: Try reading what I wrote.

Perhaps if you did, you would see that I was responding to the question "fake in what way", and my response was primarily that the ongoing policy response is disproportionate, and doesn't consider externalities. I never said no-one was dying, nor did I insinuate anything anything you said in your emotionally laden 2nd paragraph.

So yes, it is a straw man and you are obviously here to rebut an argument I am not making.

                • @meowbert: First of all, no it is not fake in any way. I doubt you understand how the math of understanding pandemics work, but the modelling shows how quickly a handful of cases can become overwhelming. I could point you at videos that explain it really well, but you're very clear about having your own mind made up. Still, y\ou didn't manage to debunk anything. Not one single thing. There is no straw man in my argument, except in your own mind.

                  • -2

@syousef: Perhaps next time read what I wrote as opposed to grabbing a word and building your entire non-existent argument around it.

                    5/10 points for troll effort.

                    • -1

@meowbert: I read what you wrote. Perhaps you're the one have trouble comprehending, so let me take your own words and amend them. The ongoing policy response is NOT disproportionate, and DOES consider externalities. There are no straw men - I am using your own words. There is no trolling, just because I don't agree with your unsubstantiated claims based on a misunderstanding of the evidence you think you provided. It doesn't matter how many times you repeat those accusations - repetition does NOT make them true. The real statistics and science are out there and show that the response is entirely appropriate. You just don't want to accept them because they don't fit your preconceived ideas.

                      • @syousef: All you've said is that I am wrong many times, and then said absolutely nothing to back it up aside from making rude, inaccurate accusations.

Let me spoon feed you since you can't grasp the concept of a rebuttal - where are your real statistics and real science which you've mentioned multiple times, where do they consider externalities properly? Note that ninemsn is not considered a scientific journal so don't start there.

                        • @meowbert: I've said you're wrong many times because you are wrong. I've tried to explain to you why the conspiracies you have put forward don't work. And yes they are conspiracies - even if you source your data from the ABS you don't source your conclusions there.

You either can't or won't understand my arguments. If anyone has been rude and inaccurate it is you: You are the one who has accused me of trolling. You are the one who has insisted that I am using straw men when I have clearly refuted the points you have made.

When I have presented data and refuted what you have to say, you have accused me of using straw man arguments, and dismissed that data. When I have not presented data, you also complain. You can't have it both ways. You also reference very questionable web sites which are not scientific sources and act as if your point is proven.

The statistic on worldmeters are collated from the official sources of many countries and those are cited below. You literally can't expect better than that. Even if they're off by a factor of 2 (and to be clear, in general, they are not) it's still a major pandemic. Sure they aren't perfect and there have been corrections to the official data - that is to be expected given how this pandemic evolved - but overall the data is pretty damn solid, and being sourced from a large number of agencyes from many countries, I'd call them pretty reliable.
                          https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Another excellent site that has collated and presented data here. The video explaining this
                          https://aatishb.com/covidtrends/

Here is a very good basic introduction to the math of pandemics and why when you're dealing with a logistic curve in the exponential phase you need to act quickly or things can get out of hand. It also introduces basic layperson's modelling (no where near as complex as professional science) that gives you a flavour for what happens when different groups interact. It should be clear from this that we aren't over-reacting.
                          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kas0tIxDvrg

Here's a little more on the SIR model that is the basis for the more complex models that those modeling pandemics use.
                          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrp40ck3WpI

So it doesn't matter if Australian government statistics don't show a terrible death rate, because we've seen what has happened in other countries, and we know how to model what this pandemic will do if we don't act. By the way the World Economic Forum is not a scientific resource that specializes in epidemiology, and one would EXPECT their bias to be the economy.

Of course I'm already quite certain from your past posts that you'll ignore everything I posted and just call me a troll, rabbit on about logical fallacies I have not made. By the way, you still haven't explained why the morgues are so busy. And you're still calling people in other countries where those morgues are overflowing liars and fools. That is very much a conspiracy.

                          • +1

@syousef: You are a very passionate person and care about the live lost in the pandemic. It make sense that you wish to correct misconception that could hinder our response to the pandemic.

Could I draw your attention to a few information.

Firstly the senate inquiry on early treatment of covid 19 in the US. Where the CDC won’t give any recommendation on treatment before hospitalisation.

                            https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/hearings/early-outpatient-treat…

                            https://www.hsgac.senate.gov/early-outpatient-treatment-an-e…

Then there is the compilation of medical research on covid 19 using different medication.

                            https://c19study.com/

Wish budesonide was also on the list. It hasn’t drawn enough attention to it yet.

As for computer modelling, it just a model. The design of such model can show anything you wish it to base on the design. It can be totally fictional. Any experts can make a lie total believable and we are at their mercy unless we educate ourself; Which is unlikely since then we all need to be expert on practical everything.
Any corrupted global organisation, with it members in high positions in various government health departments around the world, can used the modelling for whatever purpose they have their design upon.

I won’t talk about the death, media coverage and covid 19 cases. I want to see the resolution of this situation in a humane manner as I am sure you and meowbert do too.

                            • @shoppingbag: The CDC has been manipulated by the government administration and they interfered in what the CDC was permitted to say.

Saying "computer modelling, it is just a model" is like saying "a hammer is just a hammer" after watching someone build a cabin from scratch. The point is that the models, even if not 100% predictive will have features that are predictive. You can vary the parameters and see that for almost any pandemic a small number of cases quickly grows exponentially before levelling off. So a handful of cases will quickly explode into something unmanageable. How quickly is important but there are a wide range of values for which the response needs to be the same. The modeling we're talking about is being done by MANY organizations and the variations on the SIR model is the gold standard that has been used to model pandemics long before Covid came on the scene.

If you refuse to discuss the deaths and Covid cases why are you even commenting? The whole point is to prevent harm including death and long term circumstances. If you take that out of the equation there's nothing to discuss.

                              • +1

@syousef: I am sorry, I will know better to respond to you in the future then.

Hope you keep yourself and your love one safe through the pandemic and stay inform.

                                • @shoppingbag: You too. I would very much like to see as little suffering as possible all round.

                          • @syousef: I can't or won't understand your arguments because you haven't presented any that respond to the points I've made. Instead you have just been presumptuous and arrogant, stop wasting my time.

                            • @meowbert: All I read is you refuse to comprehend my responses and would rather insult and abuse me than try. Right back at you on the time wasting.

Its all hype until someone dear to you dies. One colleague (overseas) recently lost 6 direct family members to covid. Doesn't matter who you think benefits, it will still be coming for you too.

          • @Popo: Yes I agree with your sentiment, as I mentioned no-one likes doing the mathematics of death.

    • I love it when someone raises their head above the mind controlled sheep, great comment bargainhunting2020.

    • I wonder what people like you do for a living…

  • Title not available for purchase at both AU and US sites

  • +2

Just got all of them for free on the AU site - cheers!

  • Cheers OP!

  • All the US site is no longer free

    • It is working for me. I just got all of them free from the US site a couple of minutes ago.

    • They all look free to me currently.

      • I get what you're saying but have tried all the titles many times throughout the day, still not free. Or not available. The audiobook is free. Bah! anyways, i'll wait for another time

  • Some reviews claimed that it is “Riddled with errors and advertisements”, not sure if I want to download them

    • Moron starter pack, I take it you have yours.

Why do George Orwell deals always bring out the OzBargain pseudointellectual cringelords by their dozens?

    • +1

Because we love our conspiracy theory.

    • +1

Perhaps you'd like to give an interview? Then we'd all know the answer.

      • I can't wait for the next time 1984 is free on Kindle and someone posts a deal here on OzBargain.

The comment section is going to be an exact replica of this deal and the previous dozen Orwell deals where people think they're being clever by pointing out how prophetic the book is. It's so trite and boring.

I'm glad you continue to enjoy it, though.

        • I've actually never read it. I'm one of those lucky/blessed people who doesn't desperately need to. ;-)

        • You know that you needn’t read the comments to future deal on Orwell’s books.

Those books is just about the potential danger of establishment and to be wary of propaganda, censorship & etc imo. Thus you get lots of people talking about how they see it being apply to us and to those abroad now.

When the media fail as being the watchdog for an out of control government/establishment, what system do we have in place to protect the people? Court of law? Police? Constitution?

People just wish to voice their concerns and here where’s we perceive other like minded people might reside.

  • Is anyone else unable to get a copy? Almost every time there is a deal for free e-books on Amazon, I can never get a copy.
I am logged in to my Amazon Prime account, I try both the US and AU sites. I have the Kindle app downloaded on my computer. There is just no option to purchase/add to cart or anything. I am on the Kindle version of the book, and I can see the options to buy other versions (hard copy, soft copy, audio etc).
Is there some reason there's no option to add the book to my Kindle library? Am I missing some step?

    • Maybe you have ad blocker software installed? It hides the buttons on some websites when I have it turned on.

Alternatively, most of the books posted are found as torrents. Install something like qbittorrent (PC), or Flud (Android), and I'm not sure what to install for apple stuff… then search for the title on The Pirate Bay and click the magnet symbol.

  • No longer works for AU. price now is $1.09 for Kindle edition.

    • As per the post comments, the first two are not free but the rest are.

  • All coming up as 0.99c in Aus store
