Do you know if this is the case with their whole range?
We have a dog with kidney disease who is only 5 , and have been basically told Hills K/D science diet is all we should be feeding her.
At this rate, we will be spending more on her food than our own.
So I'm looking for alternatives if you have any suggestions
Make your own mate. Water, rice & chicken pieces in a pot and boil till rice is cooked. Add a bit of pumpkin. Serve at room temperature.
I agree with @FBI but this might not work for everyone to always cook.
We use dry dog food but we add veges and meat to it. Not solely just dry food. We add a combo of diced carrots, cucumber, celery, broccoli stem, capsicum and sometimes fruit with meat (Sometimes raw meat, sometimes cooked.. l and canned tuna in spring water mix it up). We don't add all of them but a combo of 2-3 veg and meat plus dry food. You'll notice most of the veg is water heavy so it helps our doggo to feel full while at the same time doesn't add on the calories. It's also great because they get used to vege snacks as a treat and introduces them to various good food.
Mind you we have a Doggo under 1yr so it's makes it somewhat easier.
What do you have to back this up or as an alternative food that's at the level this is meant to be?
Simple answer.. google and research. Yes sounds like a cop out but I don't keep on hand references to my own research.
This video is helpful overview of some info and will give you a starting point.
As always it depends on your budget. I could recommend food but it's unless if it's too expensive and you won't understand why it's better over another brand.
Happy to answer any questions you may have but you'll find most of the answers you need online 😊
P.s have a look at my earlier reply on how we feed out doggo.
As per @vash5 's comment, Hill's Science Diet uses corn as their main 'filler' ingredient.
The below is an extract from a pet food review site…
"The first ingredient in this product aimed at active carnivores is… corn 🤷
That’s disappointing, and an immediate insight into how the company makes so much money.
Corn is one of the cheapest inclusions we can find in a pet food, and a very cheap way to boost protein levels in the food without using meat."
The review can be found here: https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/dry-dog-food/hills-science…
As I me mentioned in a recent post.. I would suggest you avoid this brand as its mostly made up of cheap fillers and your playing a very high premium for something that's floating around supermarket quality
