Imitation Firearm Permit - Gel Blaster NSW

Hi ozBargainers,

Have anyone successfully obtained a "Imitation Firearm Permit" for Gel Blasters in NSW on the grounds of collections purposes? Or even, any purposes?

I'm just wondering if there is a point in getting a gel blaster if it's not clear whether the authority would ever grant a permit for it.

Thanks all

Mod note: According to NSW Police:

The NSW Police Force Firearms Registry wish to advise that in NSW an
expert determination has been made that a gel blaster has been classified
an air gun1 , which is defined as a firearm2. The gel ball has been similarly
classified as ammunition3

In addition, gel blasters that substantially duplicate in appearance a military
style firearm4 are classified as a prohibited firearm.
Please be advised that it is an offence to possess or use a firearm, pistol or
prohibited firearm unless the person holds the relevant licence or permit5

Further, it is an offence to supply, acquire, possess or use a firearm that is
not registered6

Given the above information, it is recommended that if you are in
possession of a gel blaster in NSW or you are considering acquiring a gel
blaster, that you seek the relevant advice.

I have no experience in seeking a permit for gel blasters.
I know some people who have collectors permits for non-firing fire arms in NSW.
My general comment is it will be difficult to get a permit for a gel blaster that fires, but you can pretty easily get one if you permanently disable the gun and treat it as a non-operating collectible like a movie prop. This probably isn’t what you are after.
If you want to import working guns, you will likely need an exemption from the minister, and it will be very tight (e.g. for items at this location, used for this purpose) and you will likely need to show a pretty tight reason (planning to operate a business using these for team building activities, for example).

If you want to play around with them for a bit of fun, it probably isn’t possible in NSW.

I should add the exemptions above start with a shooters licence, so if that is a pain or too expensive, that’s your answer.

  • They're banned, you can't get a permit for them just like airsoft.

Reeeeeeeeeee! How dare you start a thread about toys designed for children.

    • Because no offences are committed using gel blasters at all…
