Decent Android phone under $200

So I was too slow getting hold of the Acer Liquid Metal when it was knocking around at sub $150. Looking to buy the girlfriend a nice Android phone that will handle most apps and basic usage without chugging and has good battery life. All seems a little quiet coming up to xmas, any suggestions?

  • Unlocked or locked? If you want unlocked, try the LG Optimus One P500 on eBay for around $119 shipped. It only has a 600mhz CPU, but at least has 512mb of RAM.

Alternative, Huawei Sonic for $188 via Woolies/Dick Smith — also unlocked, and runs Gingerbread natively. However, the stock ROM has quite a number of bugs (replacing it with CM7 highly recommended) and the phone isn't crash hot at performance either.

If you don't mind getting one locked, there's the LG Optimus Spirit (3.2 inch, 800mhz processor) for $150 which is a Telstra handset.
Seems to have a fairly decent review: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1808134

For Optus, there's the Galaxy Ace which goes for $199 and has a 800mhz CPU.

    • The ace is also available on Telstra for the same money…. and recently (until yesterday) had a $40 recharge card included for free at BigW.

  • HD2000 Android 2.3 OS Smart Phone TV WiFi GPS 4.3 Inch Touch Screen Cellphone $160 also a good choice.
