This Musashi product is the 100% Whey protein option, so is a WPC/WPI mix, but in my opinion the best value Vanilla protein you can buy from a bricks and mortar store in AUS. Part of the 1/2 Price deals ATM from CW: https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/catalogue

Yes, there is bulk nutrients based in TAS, but you're paying $49 for the same amount as this offer.

    Rubbish

Data to back up your opinion?

I emailed Bulk Nutrients to send them a sample of this to test the actual protein content….they replied with something along the lines of "Musashi are a big player and have been around for a long time. We don't feel they would be under dosing their product and are confident the content will be accurate."

      For $20/kg, it's excellent value.

      • I'm looking to get into weight lifting, would you recommend this for a starter?

        • +1

Any supplement is exactly that, just a supplement. It shouldn't replace a good diet. You only need to use a protein powder if you're struggling to get your daily macro's/calories in.

But in terms of protein supplements, this is fine. Anything around the 74-77% protein is good for WPC (can vary depending on flavour as the chocolate for example requires more flavouring per 100g than vanilla). You can get a bit higher protein content per 100g in a WPI but it's more expensive.
Don't bother with "weight gainers", if you need more calories for whatever reason and can't get them via eating, just get cheap dextrose and add some of that to your shakes.

        • I am currently using this for power lifting workouts (i.e. squats, bench, deadlifts etc.).

I find it to be a bit overly sweet but I did pack on mass quite easily with this aiding my meals.

          Currently at 90kgs / 178cm.

I will most likely change to something else but this is good for its price but not the best out there if you can afford to spend a bit more.

IMO this is a great value option to go with to reach your protein goals.

One scoop in the morning with water or skim milk and you're done. Haters will say "This product is useless" or "As long as you get your protein from XYZ, don't overspend on this rubbish" etc. I disagree and think a habit of including a protein rich breakfast 'side' like this is decent.

You'll need to also manage other areas of your diet including minimising sugar, highly processed foods and drinking a heap of water. Furthermore, adequate sleep (7.5-9hrs) is important. Additionally, you'll need to complete cardio activity as well as a weight routine linked to your goal/s.

@rawm: Awesome :) thanks guys I will pick some up. Definitely will help me reach my protein goals every day with breakfast.

dont make the mistake of thinking your choice of protein is going to have any impact on you if you are starting out lifting.

Focus on the basics. Lifting correctly, lifting consistently, on a proper programme and eating correctly.

You can use the worst protein on the market and it wont matter if youre doing the above

this stuff tastes like crap compared to the coconut chocolate wpi stuff on ozbargain. i regret buying this

In my experience this is so sweet as to be undrinkable. I gave away most of a tub to a mate (he'll eat/drink anything).

Taste is personal, but I have a strong preference for the Bulk Nutrients (I use Protein Matrix+, also a whey blend) product at $56 for 2 kg. The vanilla is also sweet (not anything like the Musashi though). Prefer the chocolate.

    • Do you mix it with milk or water? I think it's fine with water but don't make it overly thick…probably 400ml per scoop.

      • I mix with skim milk and ice cubes if at home. I definitely water down the measurements by adding extra ice. Prefer it this way.
If out I mix with water.

I usually buy the Caramel Earth Protein from Bulk Nutrients but not the vanilla.. It tastes like cardboard.. so I get musashi vanilla whey when it's on sale. It tastes like a milkshake with about 250ml of milk, a little on the sweet side but I like it. Chocolate is less sweet, and more mild on flavour. The protein matrix from BN is decent too.

Musashi has great BCAAs in their protein already, so you don't have to buy that separately either. It's great bang for buck, and the flavour is isn't bad either.

Every whey based protein should have “great BCAAs” and then some. Assuming you are taking some form of whole protein, BCAAs are basically a bullshit supplement for companies to make money on.

Only 74% protein and I wasn’t much of a fan when I tried it, but that was some time ago.

I would prefer to spend the extra for bulk nutrients and get choice of flavours and 77%-80% protein (wpc), or around 90% for their wpi but this costs more again. Think it’s just a better product overall.

If you must get it from a bricks and mortar store and just want cheap protein INC Dynamic Whey is $32.49 for 2kg at the moment at chemist warehouse and I think it has about 75% protein.

    • The only BN WPC that is 80% is raw/unflavoured. As soon as you add flavour, it drops the content a few percent.
Both Musashi and BN WPC are 74% for chocolate flavours. If you want more (you're literally talking about 1g per scoop) then go with the Vanilla.

The INC stuff is 70% but if you're that concerned about 3-5% difference, just have a slightly larger scoop. This is the case with INC as it's a 36g scoop vs 33g for Musashi or 30g for BN. Most people would probably heap them anyway or you can always weigh your whey ;)

      • I’m not a fan of chocolate flavoured protein powders so never actually realised that they have less protein content.

Even taking that into consideration it doesn’t change my opinion, store brought protein has always been a bit disappointing for me (unless your going to a gym bro supplement store and paying a stupid amount).

Nice! Just opened my last container today. Always have a spare! I use it for recovery.

  • Do you guys feel that ON is just marketing or it's much better than Musashi or other brands? The price of Musashi is pretty good. Thanks

    • +1

Most protein are similar in terms of the ingredient mix, the main difference will be with the proportions. As long as there is a decent protein percentage ~75% for whey protein concentrate, value for money-wise I opt for Myprotein when it's on sale. I reckon the majority of OzBargainers are in the same boat.

If taste really matters to you then price it in - I've heard that ON has a great flavour. Personally I'm not too bothered by taste, Musashi was my first brand protein powder - it was on the sweeter side. I wouldn't pay more than $20/kg for WPC as I buy in bulk and it lasts me till the next sale comes around, I'd get this over ON just based price even though you get 80% protein to total product.

  • I can only drink whey isolate otherwise I'll fart all day if I drink whey concentrate! Anyone else?

    • That's normal for a lot of people. Try to avoid in the office :)

TLDR: Musashi is sweet (best with water), INC is less sweet (best with milk) Based on chocolate for both.

I use musashi and flavour is pretty solid, it is on the sweeter side so it is more ideal with water,
Another cheap option from Chem warehouse is INC, less sweet and more ideal drinking with milk and goes on sale often enough(also half price currently)
Personally I am a fan of drinking it with milk generally for taste along with milk containing casein protein so it gives the benifit of both proteins fast and slow absorbing.
This is based purely on chocolate flavour of both.
