Dodo Xmas Specials - $25 for 8/16GB Prepaid Mobile Broadband Data, 180 Days Expiry

280

Works out to half price for data. The 8/16Gb is to do with their off peak (nightime) is twice the data per unit cost.

Other specials too, all about "half price" (Dodo price?).

$10 for 3/6Gb mobile data, 30 day expiry.
$25 for a USB Mobile Broadband Modem with 5/10Gb data, 30 day expiry.
$50 for a Portable Wifi Hotspot (mifi pebble) with 15/30Gb data, 90 day expiry.

Deal ends midnight tomorrow (according to their web page)

Seems like they want to sell new stuff. For example I'm a dormant mobile broadband customer, yet there seemed to be no way to use my existing sim with this deal, only recharge it at the standard rate (twice the price!). So I ordered a new sim through the online form. I suppose it will arrive at my door in the next few days.

  • Note that the $10 deal is for a micro SIM, not a standard SIM.

  • +5

    they havent gone extinct?

  • do any of those little usb modems take a full sized sim, or are they all microsim? Looks like u cant get the 180 day expiry with a microsim?

    • Got a USB (3.6Mbps)starter kit a while back. Has a standard Sim that you can bust out the microsim if you want to use on other devices e.g. iPad

  • No probs. Deleting comment as not relevant. Giving +1 for great deal.

  • The 180 day expiry is great for those with a tablet which is hardly ever used away from WiFi so not worth going onto a monthly plan for.

    • But this won't be suitable for a tablet like the iPad 1/2 right? They use microsims.

      • +1

isn't a microsim just the middle that you "knock" out of the newer standard sims? Most of the new ones have this feature for the last few years.

But you're right, it would be wise to call Dodo support before buying to make sure. I found their customer service quite good in the past … I'm a dormant customer (soon to be re-activated when my new sim arrives) not because I was unhappy with them .. just got a better price for 12 months prepaid data from Amaysim a few months ago.

This deal is better than the one I got, and I grabbed it for the missus' Iconia tablet via a spare mi-fi pebble that we have just now.

Sim I got in the USB stick was the knockout to convert type.

What blocks is the data charged in i.e. 1Kb, 100KB or 1MB?

    • http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1820964 suggests per kb, but i wouldn't take it as a definitive answer

      • Thanks for that. I also confirmed with a Dodo support person and it is 1KB blocks. Also found out that it doesn't allow tethering - bummer!

        • What?! By design their $50 special mifi thingy HAS to tether the included sim to multiple computers else it can't do what it is built for. Most people in the know (like those who work for isp's) quietly admit that they can't tell whether a sim is tethered or not.

        • maybe he is referring to iphone tethering.

Cheap prices! I bought one ages ago (i think it was 5 years ago) thru cotd and it was worse than dial-up (I'm not kidding) and I used to live in St. Kilda not Woop Woop !?!

    • Err.Seems fine for me…but 5yrs ago got wireless bb with Optus?

  • I bought a Vodafail stick with data a couple of months ago and am on holiday using a Telstra stick that I bought about ten days ago.

Am I correct in assuming that these sticks are probably locked to the "fail and telstra?

    • subsidised hardware usually locked to provider/network.

  • Ooops! Hey Ozbargainers, I forgot to put in that the deal ends midnight tomorrow! (according to the website).

I'll edit the intro right away.

  • ok, I have no idea! I recently got my first laptop and want to get it online.(yeah, I know. Welcome to the 21st century!) What do I need, the usb modem or the wifi hotspot thing?Does one have more advantages than the other. I live in a semi rural area, will that make a difference?
    Thanks

    • -1

Wifi is available only in hotspots like Mcdonalds (which is very limited in daytime hours), so 3G/mobile broadbnd using a usb modem on laptop is best. 3G signal is available in all cities and many towns Oz-wide (see netwrk maps). It's easy to install & use, and its cheap. Hope this helps. Stick with 3G, unless you have known access to Wifi.
Welome to 21st century by the way!

    • Congrats on getting your first laptop! :P

If you only plan on using the internet on your laptop, then just go for the USB modem. If you have other computers or devices as well as the laptop that you want to connect to the internet, then go for the WiFi hotspot.
So long as you can get decent coverage with Dodo (uses the Optus network), it shouldn't make a difference which one you get.

EDIT: ignore wa01 ^… gosh.. the USB Modem & WiFi Hotspot are basically the same thing, except the WiFi hotspot means you can connect other devices to the internet, as I mentioned above. It could be slower than the usb modem as it's basically two connections rather than just one.

    • I live in a semi rural area, will that make a difference?

might. you need to check the coverage maps to see if reception is available in your area

  • wow, the 8gb sim looks like a good deal, especially since you can use it over 180 days.

what increments do they bill in?

    • I checked with Dodo support, it's 1Kb increments

      • Be very, Very skeptical about that purported data increment. I tried on one occasion to no definitive avail to find out. Maybe in reality 1mb, may even be the Optus 10mb disgrace. Also be keenly aware that if you're hoping to get downloads somewhere between the min and max on offer, that using ANY data outside off-peak time may see the entire account revert to the lower figure as a maximum.

Dodo, like Joe Camel, illustrates (pun intended!), just how far a company can go off the back of a cartoon character. How they've managed to survive, given their customer service reputation is still beyond me.

  • Great deal and great find trev! Does Dodo include free social media like fb, twitter, ebay etc like other Optus re-sellers??

    • I'm pretty sure they don't. Dodo seem to be into the cheapest 'sticker' price as a way to capture new customers with no room left to add any extras. That's just great for an old fart like me who's not much into facebook etc. But I AM looking to do more with "Diaspora' the new, open source, privacy boosted competitor to Facebook. ;)

  • Did anyone who sign up receive a confirmation email?

All I got was a transaction number on the web page after hitting the submit button.

    • Hey, got nothing either after filling in my details.
Was freaking out that it could be a scam page that takes your payment details.
Oh well, will just wait and see. In the meantime I'm withdrawing all my cash from that account!

    • Yeah, all I got was the on screen confirmation number. Wonder why they do it that way? They definitely have my email address 'coz that's how they told me that this deal was on!!

      • +1

Hey, OK, I contacted Dodo Sales, they have NO idea about my transaction. Gave them all my details, they could not find any trace of my order. And she said yes, they normally do send a confirmation email. Cancel your credit card NOW!

Can you confirm that the original promotional email you received was from Dodo?

        • that's worrying

          Cancel your credit card NOW!

that sounds a bit extreme - the authorisation that has appeared on my visa debit card is from dodo internet and the submit form is via https dodo url.

incompetent maybe, no reason to suspect fraud yet

  • +2

    dodo suck

My mom told me to stay away from the dodos

  • Stop your grizzling! Dodo support on whirlpool is good, Optus network is OK here (Hobart), what's the problem? My question is: does the $25 modem Christmas deal have a 250/500 MB per month option, over a year, the same as their starter kit? Thanks

    • +1

I reckon that the special is justa half price offer on their usual starter kits, so yes they'l probably be delighted that you choose the 250/500Mb option. It's beena long while since wasa new customer with them but I seem to recall that got to choose from a list prices when the included days allowance ran out / expired

  • Pretty good price for the wi-fi hot spot,

I snatched one up for my grandparents as they are in need of an internet connection they can use at home and take with them!

    Nice!

    • Got a random phone call at 7am this morning…

They put completely the wrong suburb down, luckily the guy rang me to confirm it all.

Said it should be here tomorrow as they posted today…. doubt it with the Xmas mail and all.

  • I keep getting a "TRANSACTION FAILED. Error: System Error" whenever I try to order.
    Anyone else got this?

    • Okay, just tried again, and it worked with a transaction ID. See if I get the elusive confirmation email…

  • hi,
wanted to knw what does the USB modem mean (bonus 5GB/ 8GB).. will i get the sim card along with it ?

  • +3

Dodo sucks. I ordered the Portable WiFi modem last night but forgot to put my suburb into the address field (I'm used to there being numerous fields for details.. and only realised my mistake after I'd hit "Buy Now"), so thought I'd better call them in the morning and check if they had the order on the system.

The CSR I got through to was unaware of the promotion so they said they'd speak to their supervisor and call me back.
An hour later and no return call, I thought I'd call them. Got through to sales (who had no idea of this promotion, I had to read out the url to the guy), who then transferred me to customer support.

Customer support also had no idea of the promotion, I had to repeatedly give them my information, and wait on hold while (I assume) the CSR went to and fro from the supervisor, all to no avail. The CSR said they'd have to get my details and call me back within 24-48hrs (by which time the special offer would've ended) so I ordered a second time while on the phone see if it would go through to their system (with my full address this time). Checked my bank account immediately afterwards to find that the order had obviously gone through twice (wasn't sure the first time whether it was some other transaction withdrawing funds from my account). Gave the CSR my 2nd transaction ID and once again they couldn't find my transaction on the system, but the account of someone else instead.
They got my details (AGAIN), and said they'd call me back. I asked if I could speak to someone who manages their social media presence with a view to sorting out what's going on and possibly replying to everyone here. They don't have any social media team, and apparently someone from accounts manages the Facebook page, so I asked to be put through to them.

I finally spoke to a guy (English-speaking!!) who got my details, transaction IDs, and said he'd speak to his manager when he got out of a meeting and would then call me back..
I informed him of OzBargain, and how Dodo really need a social media presence and someone to sort out things like this. Didn't sound like he was going to do anything about that though…..

Sounds like an EPIC stuff up at their end. From what I gather, the transaction ID's created by new orders are being linked to existing customers accounts.
Not so sure I want to proceed with this order… if either of them exist…….

EDIT: the guy from accounts? just called back. (30 mins later.. that was quick!) he informed me that orders placed as part of this promotion are not automatically added to the system, they are added to a spreadsheet and manually processed once the offer has ended.
He's emailed the appropriate department and arranged for my first order (incomplete address) to be cancelled, and for the 2nd order to be processed instead.

So to those of you who are wondering what the heck is going on, don't fear. According to this info your orders have been received. Hopefully they'll email once they've manually processed the spreadsheet. (sounds primitive!)

    • +1

Ugh, well done for getting to the bottom of it at least.

I actually did the exact same thing - my computer did the autofill for the form and I forgot to double check it, so my order just has my number and street on it, no suburb or postcode. However, I've been too lazy to chase it up just yet. Hopefully when the poor person manually processing the orders gets to mine they'll realise and ring me :-)

      • no worries! yeah hopefully they'll ring you! if not, call Ivan (ID - 00212) from customer relations or accounts. ;)

thanks for digging to the bottom of this mess. they could have handled it a bit better by telling customers what was going to happen

      • no worries! yeah i agree, trust a telco to mess up like this!

Update from earlier post: Dodo supervisor confirms that billing increment is in fact 10mb - a.k.a the worst case scenario. Not surprised. Thanks to Optus I guess for showing them how to get away with a doing an unconscionable 10,000 × Telstra horror.

  • I spent about 30 minutes on the Phone with Dodo today, to see if #1 it was legitimate, and #2 what are the terms and conditions before handing over my credit card number.

She confirmed it was legitimate, but she did not have access to any details as it not a product they can sell over the phone. She said she would transfer me from sales to customer service, it rang twice then I was disconnected. not a great start for a communications company.

Does anyone know where the "Deal ends midnight tomorrow (according to their web page)" quoted by the OP is? I can't find any mention on the web page.

    • pretty sure it ends tonight. the girl i spoke with was going to just call me back in 24-48hrs with more info, but then realised the promo ends midnight.. you might wanna see my post ^ there for more details.. ;)

    • Sorry all, that's my bad! … the closing time was in the email I got (as a dormant customer?) Here's the exact wording:-

"Free delivery with all Dodo prepaid offers, Australia-wide.
Sale must end at midnight on Tuesday, 13 December 2011"

I hope they don't extend it because the discussions above seem to show that nothing gets processed or sent until after the promo closes

  • Is there a time period for activation before the sim & data is voided? Later activation [when needed] = later start of 180day data period?

    • Likely auto activation within 7 days if not activated earlier.

      • According the Whirlpool forum its not auto activated but you have only till 31 Dec 2011 to activate the SIM.

    • That's one of the things I wanted to know, but telephone sales do not have any information on this offer. If you want to find out you need to ask for customer service instead.

  • Well, the Dodo Xmas special page is still up this morning and the form on the page still seems to be accepting input, so maybe people can still buy.
If other Ozbargainers can still grab this deal, I'll see if I can remove the "expired" notice.

    • it appears to have disappeared now

  • anyone know how long it should take to get processed/sent out?

  • Anyone received any confirmation email?
    I haven't as of yet.

Only indication is authorised transaction on my card.

    • Same boat, can see the transaction on my card on the 14/12 but no email from them and nothing in the mail.

  • i just received dodo sim in mail today (ordered on 12th, mailed 14th, received today)

  • I just got my sim. Ordered on the 11th, mailed on 14th.

  • So is there any expiry details on the sim you have received?

Can it sit in a drawer until you need it, and activate it then?

    • the info that arrived with the sim is very sparse. just a sim number, activation code and a number to dial

      • Thanks for that.

        • +1

According to DODO rep at the Whirlpool forum you have until the 31 Dec 2011 to activate the SIM card. Thats not much time

  • Anyone know if it can be used in an iphone and tethered? If so, how?

  • still havn't got my sim..ordered on the 13th :S

    • Same situation, ordered a USB model on the 13th.
Called them yesterday, and after being transferred to customer service, they managed to look up the transaction ID I supplied to them. They said shipping should take 5-7 business days, so I'm going to see if I get it tomorrow.

    • Appears Dodo is sending things out at all different times; I ordered sim the 12th received 9 days later the 21st.

    • Likewise.

  • +1

Got my SIM card yesterday. Activated today by phone. Was good to go 30 mn later.
But it did not work straightaway, I had to change the APN to dodolns1. (Thanks Whirlpool !)

    • +1

just in case anyone else is wondering (and i had no idea), you ring up and enter the control # & last 4 digits of the sim number, wait 30 minutes then connect to internet using the above APN (dodolns1) and you should get redirected to the dodo signup page, enter details and you're away. i never had to use activation code?

      • A big plus vote for mattgal, and others who have been posting tech support stuff for this deal here! :)

Someone should tell the Dodo REPS to get active here. This Xmas promo is different from their usual offers in a number of ways (activate by 31/12/11, the 8/16gb 180 day allowance etc.)

Special deals need special social media support for sure, and where better than at Ozbargain where the main talk is about special deals (bargains)? :)

  • Got mine yesterday, originally Toll tried to deliver it on Thursday but they wouldn't leave the Portable Wifi Hotspot in the letterbox it needed to be signed for, had to arrange redelivery for yesterday.

When I check my usage on https://accountmanagement.dodo.com.au/account/usage.aspx though, it's got the 180 day 8/16GB deal not the 90 day 15/30GB hotspot offer. I forgot to take a screenshots of the original deal, could some kind soul upload a pic to tinypic.com or somewhere with a screenshot?

Oh and here in Northcote, I get 200KBps on speedtest.net, the hotspot supports 7.2Mbps HSDPA which is good but seems to only support 900 and 2100 3G networks, and it's a Huawei E5832.

      • Woo hoo, thanks!!!! Will let everyone know how I go, might be pretty hard to get through to them until after Christmas I reckon, although I was on hold less than a minute when activating my Sim, couldn't get it to work via the phone menu options, had to speak to someone.

  • munted - let everybody know if you actually get that fixed.
Everyone who hasn't received/activated - remember if you use even 1kb of data outside off-peak (12am-7am), the max download reverts to the lower amount on offer. There is no half-way measure.

    • does it really work like that?

the only description they give is "Double Off-Peak Usage - Usage range is shown as minimum and maximum allowance. Receive double your allowance during Off-Peak Hours (12am to 7am). Maximum allowance based on off-peak usage only. Minimum allowance based on peak usage only. "

i read that as between 8gb and 16gb, not either 8gb or 16gb: "Minimum allowance based on peak usage only". i don't think you are correct

i've only used my dodo sim a bit on offpeak so far since i've got another tpg sim which i'm currently using during the day.

i tried some offpeak downloads and dodo does appear to give double your data in offpeak (recorded as about half of what my ppp stats said). speeds are the same as tpg. data is accounted in 10kb increments. so far my dodo service has been fine!

  • Rang up Dodo to confirm (data charge increment charging -10MB), but also to confirm data download business. I told him I didn't expect him to use the word 'scam', but to acknowledge that it was effectively a marketing ploy and that the lower figure as a maximum was all most people would achieve. He said yes. Vis a vis lower and upper data figure I took that to mean an 'either or' situation.
I guess the only way to know for sure is if someone successfully gets beyond the lower figure threshhold…

    • Rang up Dodo to confirm (data charge increment charging -10MB)

i think dodo meant 10kB (0.01MB). it is easy to establish from the usage page:

      used: 35.36 MB
      22/12/2011 12:00:00 AM 6.18 MB
      22/12/2011 1:00:00 AM 9.78 MB
      22/12/2011 2:00:00 AM 1.5 MB
      22/12/2011 3:00:00 AM .84 MB
      22/12/2011 4:00:00 AM 1.91 MB
      23/12/2011 12:00:00 AM 12.45 MB
      24/12/2011 12:00:00 AM 2.37 MB
      24/12/2011 1:00:00 AM .33 MB

if it were 10MB increments all data usage would be multiples of 10MB

the totals from my ppp stats:
      23/12/2011 DOWN = 23644350, UP = 584227, TOTAL = 24228577 (24.23MB)
      24/12/2011 DOWN = 4224202, UP = 816214, TOTAL = 5040416 (5.04MB)

as far as i can see, i am getting what i am paying for.

another nice feature is the usage only takes a couple of hours to update which is fantastic compared to tpg's crap accounting which takes a day or two to update. i supose dodo lose financially if they don't have real-time usage stats for cutting off prepaid vs tpg who don't care because they will happily charge for excess data.

but to acknowledge that it was effectively a marketing ploy and that the lower figure as a maximum was all most people would achieve. He said yes. Vis a vis lower and upper data figure I took that to mean an 'either or' situation.

i do not take that as saying that you only get 8gb or 16gb. i interpret that as saying many people will not use their connection during offpeak hours so they will effectively only be getting their maximum peak allowance (which is 8gb) - same as peak/offpeak quota advertising for adsl.

you could have misconstrued their answer, they might have misconstrued your question, they might have had nfi what you were asking.

      • update: tried peak usage & it has been updated in records

        24/12/2011 7:00:00 PM .22 MB
        my records: DOWN = 200785, UP = 26575, TOTAL = 227360 (0.227MB)

peak & offpeak usage are shown in different colours on the breakdown. total usage has gone up to 35.58MB from 35.36MB in my previous post. works as expected and is inline with the dodo's advertising of the plan.

  • As regards first point about data charging, all telcos measure to the KB. The increment that they charge/session round is what varies, along with the decimal point they display on their usage page. What constitutes a 'session' also varies, but finding out a given telco's regime would be like pulling teeth.
Anecdotal evidence by many is that for some telcos as little as a minute without a change/refresh of webpage makes for a billing step, with others suggesting a variety of triggers/times. The most trusting have decided that telcos only round up once every 24 hours to their stated increment. Balderdash!
Having had experience with Optus, I'm not so trusting. Numerous, disturbing, otherwise unexplainable, and in recent times clearly displayed realtime usage billing step anomalies that put your teeth on edge!
Mattgal, within you're posted data figures for each given timeframe would likely be at least a few sessions, with a 10MB sting in each one, along of course with actual downloaded amount.
As to the last point, as indicated in the post above, until such time as someone in this thread or elsewhere can prove that with a mix of peak and off-peak use they have achieved a mid-point download figure, I'll remain skeptical…
Mattgal, I've just missed out on winning an Ebay auction, so I'm officially in a bad mood, but nonetheless, Merry Christmas!!

    • Mattgal, within you're posted data figures for each given timeframe would likely be at least a few sessions, with a 10MB sting in each one, along of course with actual downloaded amount.

one ppp session in offpeak on 23, used 24.23MB, accounted as 12.45MB by dodo
one ppp session in offpeak on 24, used 5.04MB, accounted as 2.7MB by dodo
one ppp session in peak on 24, used 0.227MB, accounted as 0.22MB by dodo

      daily totals:

      22-12-2011 20.22 MB
      23-12-2011 12.45 MB
      24-12-2011 2.92 MB
      = 35.59 MB

quota is 8GB. offpeak usage is accounted as half of what you actually use. simple.

i monitor my usage locally from the ppp stats on my computer. my local totals match dodo's totals to within an acceptable level (accounting for tranmission losses, etc). there are no 10MB stings. this might occur for optus's retail wireless services, but it doesn't appear to be the case for dodo. your concerns are unfounded.

As to the last point, as indicated in the post above, until such time as someone in this thread or elsewhere can prove that with a mix of peak and off-peak use they have achieved a mid-point download figure, I'll remain skeptical…

just did so a couple of posts up

      • "24-12-2011 2.92 MB" tends to suggest it is not recorded/charged per 10MB, not per 1MB, BUT per "KB". Thanks, I believe any logical customer can follow that in terms of this (Dodo's) offer.

  • Mattgal, apologies for not reading your data as closely as I should have. I was a bit distracted, and more than a bit inclined to reference Dodo practice to Optus where each and every bit of usage is displayed as one 10240kb increment after another, with those increments clicking over in a variety of both predictable and offputtingly unpredictable ways.
If Dodo are as different in practice as your data does indeed suggest, with no hidden sneakiness factored in at some point, that may well constitute a telco revelation.
I may still carry a touch of prejudice though, because I keenly remember reading a Choice Mag reader survey a few years back that placed Dodo dead last (by a country mile) for both tech support and customer satisfaction. Prepaid rather than postpaid as the safe bet maybe.

  • Postscript: I bought the $25 for 8/16GB Dodo SIM (good deal) and have been trying to use it in an E160E USB modem around Melbourne. I am finding the Optus network coverage to be surprisingly poor. I blame Optus, not Dodo.

I carry an Optus mobile and can compare the two. The mobile (Nokia E63) receives Optus better than the USB modem. In Burwood VIC, the USB modem is showing about 3 bars out of 5, the mobile 4 out of 5. The USB modem connection is fine.

However, in St Kilda, the coverage is very poor. Inside, but near a window, the Optus mobile shows highly variable signal strength, from one to 4 bars and varying constantly, and the USB modem connects but shows generally 0 (zero) bars out of 5 to 1 bar out of 5. In St Kilda, just a few Km from the CBD of Melbourne, this is appalling coverage from Optus. Really bad. My impression is that Optus have been quietly under-investing in their network for years and just milking the customers as the network gets more saturated.
I am finding that Optus mobile broadband is worse now than it was 1 year ago in terms of being able to connect and sustain a 3G connection. And I have the opportunity to use a number of Optus resellers; it is a radio coverage problem first and foremost.

  • I'm reluctant to stick up for Optus, but as one who works in the far north west of Australia, their coverage has been getting better every month for the last several years. For example there is Optus coverage at the tourist site of Windjana Gorge but no Telstra! Smallish towns like Derby now have reasonable Optus reception where there was none a few years ago.

It may be that they are shifting investment to outlying areas at the expense of growing the capital cities as indeed I've noticed reduced performance here in Perth also. I like the choice of lower voice and data costs when I'm working away in the bush, now. Even if i have to pay for it with reduced performance in the big smoke. :)

  • got double post!

  • Hey all!
    My first post on here!
I ordered the 15gb/30gb portable wifi on the 13/12. I had never received it. I have called them and they have no record of me buying it. All I have is my bank statement which doesnt have a any reference number on what to do. Can anyone give me any advice on what to do?
    Thanks, all is appreciated…

As evidenced by some of the posts above, Dodo's order page was playing up so you're not alone in having to chase things up. It would be interesting to know how many people are still waiting, or in frustration have decided to let things slide.
You said Dodo can't find reference to you, so they can't claim sent and lost by courier. You will need to get the transaction details directly from your card provider and then get back in touch with Dodo. Don't let the first person you speak to fob you off. Or the second. Or the third. Best of luck!

  • as a last resort you can contact your back to arrange a chargeback if you paid by credit card.
