Do you Avoid American & U.S. Signs and Symbols on Your Possessions When Travelling Internationally? (& AmericanTourister Luggage

Does the logo plaque on an American Tourister hardshell suitcase come off without putting a hole in the suitcase? I'm thinking of getting one but I am put off by the logo.

I ask because I have heard you should avoid any American and/or United States signs or symbols on clothing luggage etc for security reasons when travelling internationally.

    When Travelling Internationally?
Won't need to worry about this for awhile yet.

    • true but i'm not sure i want to save money on a deal on a suitcase and then be stuck with one i can only use domestically and have to buy another for international

Are you going to 🇸🇾 or 🇦🇫 ?

Even small I can recognise these flags…. yay geography!

      • What other flags can we add to the no go zones for Yanks list?

what makes you think being Australian is any better now? It used to be a good thing to be Australian, but over the last 4 - 8 years we have become linked to the US more and more.

    • there is the recent war crimes thing too. until now i think we might have been the only country who's military didn't have that stain.

but it is a thing that people say. and americans sometimes (often?) follow that same advice and even lie as much as possible about where they are from when travelling for the same reasons of safety and security.

    • over the last 4 - 8 years we have become linked to the US more and more.

Has that over taken the reputation for going to cheap countries, partying, getting drunk and getting into trouble? I believe Aussies get Eastern Europe (Croatia) mean while the British get Western Europe (Spain)?

Can someone show me any deals on foil hats?

    Get American New Zealand Tourister.

  • +2

Get Samsonite instead. Problem solved ..

    • +1

They're both owned by the same company, aren't they?

      • People who travel know that. OP doesn't. AT is a cheaper budget version of Samsonite.

        • i did know that. but i like the colour of this AT one.

  • +1

I am guessing you are trying to avoid overt symbols that reference America. As dasher86 said, get Samsonite, and even though they are owned by the same company, you won't have this issue. Also, you could get Antler - I have some Antler luggage and so far happy with the quality.

    • antler do have one i was looking at in the same colour i like in AT. the AT one is a couple of liters bigger. and i do like the pattern of the AT one more.

Just whack a smiley emoji and/or peace sign on top of the American Tourister emblem, problem solved.

Or a bit of gaff tape

    • yes i was pondering what i could possibly stick over it. its just that its one of those moulded shells with ridges in patterns, and i'm not sure how well something will stick on it. also of course something stuck on isn't going to withstand a lot of baggage conveyerbelts, but i suppose i could just keep replacing it.

    American Tourister hardshell

Nobody cares. Anyone who knows anything know it is mid budget brand and it doesn't mean you're American or American leaning. Chill out and relax.

    • +2

I think this is wrong, and in some countries an English speaking person with bags showing the stars and stripes will definitely be assumed to be American.

      • +1

Speaking specifically to "American Tourister hard shell" none of the American Tourister luggage shows the stars and stripes.

        Google would help you there.

Also you got to be dopey to have any luggage that is a sign of "please target me for theft / violence (or what ever you think might make it worth it to commit a criminal offence)"

lol hopefully u don't wear tommy, ck, polo clothes
don't drive Ford or Holden, or telsa
    don't have apple products
    don't wear nba, nfl clothes

    • +1

      no i don't actually lol

i'm not into brands, especially ones that try to make me advertise them for free by sticking their logos all over everything

but even if i did none of those have the word 'american' on them

  • +1

Put tape above it and write "NOT".

  • +1

Why not just use a cardboard box?

      The cat stole it….

      • And Homer stole it from the cat

How artistic are you with nail polish? You can put on your own design or just do a block of colour.

It's what I do with sink and bathroom taps for aged/vision impaired clients ever since the red [hot] and green[cold] colours apparently became a bad idea..

    • Great idea! it would hold up better than something adhesive. thank you.

  • You can look at July’s suitcases instead. They’re a Melbourne based company, beautiful colours, same lifetime warranty but cheaper than Samsonite and the quality is fantastic. I have two that I’ve used for 12 months (domestically) and I’m really happy with them. https://july.com/luggage/

    • Seems more expensive than Samsonite. Samsonite is almost standard 40% off RRP

  • I've never noticed the logo on my American Tourister luggage

  • +1

You could put a sticker over the logo.

  • YES…. it spells TARGET.
Lets face it, the US Authoritarian Regime is not a democracy, yet roam the world dictating their ideology upon all others.
The Authoritarian Regime needs a bogieman in order to validate their paranoid neurosis. Now it's China! How many bogieman can one neurotic have?
I make the mistake in thinking Canadian's are from the USA when I first hear their accent… they despise their neighbour… I wonder why.

    • +1

Your kiwi accent is strong today.

  • If you are traveling with an American Tourister suitcase it's unlikely you're going to Afghanistan. Shouldn't be an issue.

  • +2

If you are too risk averse to buy AT luggage I can't see you going near any countries where it may be an issue.

  • +1

I wouldn't be travelling with American flags on my gear, unless travelling to North America exclusively.
Only takes one crazy in Paris, or London, to think your'e American and the best you can hope from your holiday is a great story. They shoot/stab Police Officers, a random "US tourist" is bonus collateral damage.
