Where to Find Wild Devil’s Ivy (Pothos) Plants?

Hi y’all,

I hope y’all are enjoying your holiday so far.

Does anyone know where I can find some wild Devil’s Ivy plants in Sydney? Apparently, I read that Ivy plants are quite invasive and grow like weeds if left unchecked in the garden.

I’m trying to get a few Devil Ivy’s cuttings so I could grow them in water (in a glass vase) to liven up the Indoor areas. I have driven around my local neighbourhood trying to suss out a garden with Devil’s Ivy so I could snip a few small cuttings under the cover of darkness while ‘walking the dog’. So far, no Devil’s Ivy in sight.

I’m sure there must be Devil Ivy plants growing in the wild somewhere in Sydney. Could someone please direct me to a location where I could find some. Thanks and appreciate it.

Edit* Thanks y’all, I appreciate that y’all have talked some sense into me.
I’ll break the bank and buy the damn plant in Bunnings :/

  • Whats it look like?

  • I’ve got a crapload of weeds growing at my place, you’re welcome to come take some.

    • If the weeds are Devil’s Ivy and not Devil’s Weed, donn’t mind if I do take some.

      I’ll repeat: Devil’s IVY!

  • Pothos is an indoor plant. You won't find it growing outside.

When you hear of ivy being invasive, that would be referring to English or Boston ivy.

    • Indoor just means it prefers shade. I grow mine outside, and it was originally started from a cutting of a plant growing outside :-)

  • Bunnings. Take scissors.

    • I’m not gonna lie, this did cross my mind when I was checking out the plants at Bunnings earlier. I don’t think I could do it though as I feel that would be stealing. Bunnings are selling the plants and having me cutting off a few stems could ruin the plant’s overall appearance and cause them to lose potential sells. I don’t think I could live with the guilt.

On the other hand, i’m too cheap to want to pay for the plants, hence, I’m asking other Ozbargainers and see if y’all would know where I could find some Devil’s Ivy out in the wild. I’m sure there must be some growing out there on public lands right???

Not that I've ever seen but there might be a greenhouse in botanical garden somewhere that wouldn't miss a cutting or two.

Try a local Buy Nothing, Pay it Forward or plant group on Facebook. There's probably someone with a green thumb with some cuttings to spare.

Alternatively, buy one plant from Bunnings and propagate it yourself. There's a line between being frugal and just being a literal thief…

The amount of effort you are going to to save $5 is astounding.

Would you really drive an hour away for example if there was a plant you could steal a cutting from? The petrol would cost more than buying one locally not to mention the time (of which you've already wasted a lot by making this thread and spending time thinking about it)

You’re right. I did spend an insane amount of time googling for wild Devil’s Ivy in Sydney + Potential petrol costs.
