These are obviously very similar laptops and most head-to-head reviews recommend the Envy because it's cheaper in the US, but Australian price gouging seems to complicate things a bit. At the moment HN has the Envy R5/512GB for $1598, more expensive than the Spectre i5/256GB for $1588.
Can anyone shed some light on which laptop is the better deal overall? Cheers.

i would go with envy, apart from the less "premium" design everything else is about the same. The envy runs a far better processor. Look at benchmarks with the r5 vs i5, the amd is much better. Remember if you are with unidays or student edge you can get 30% off direct from the hp store
I have a slightly older i7 Spectre x360 as my more portable work laptop and it's great. What got me first was the power button is on opposite corner to where one of the Thunderbolt ports is. Sometimes under heavy loads it will get quite hot with the fan making a bit of noise, but that's expected given the small size and the hardware inside.
I don't use the touchscreen much but the display and overall build quality like the hinges are excellent. I also use mine with an eGPU as I run a Samsung ultrawide and works much better with dedicated graphics. Certainly a pro of having Thunderbolt compared to the Envy.
spectre is a premium consumer
envy is mid-tier consumer./end thread

Looks like we'll have to restart it with the <insert HP competitor shill here> downvoting us all.
I like spectre.
spectre x360 looks and feels more premium.
I would also say for the build quality.
you can see the difference in hinges.
emmm, they are quite expensive overall, and I don't think the new edition is available in Australia now. I would rather go for lenovo yoga 7 series, or surface laptop 3, they too discount at the moment.
or even the old edition of Xps 13, you can get one as low as aound $1200
