Which Large Hisense 4K TV for Budget of around 1.5k-2k

Hi all

I've been out of the TV game for tooooo long…
Looking to replace my 10yr old Samsung Plasma (the last gen). Preferably cost around $1.5k…
Currently interested in the following Hisense models as the brand seems to get a lot of decent feedback on OZB:
1. 70S5 - around $1k. Has Dolby vision that the other models dont have…
2. 65Q7 - around $1.2k. Has Local dimming.
3. 75S8 - around $1.4k. Largest of all but no Dolby vision or local dimming
4. 65Q8 - around $1.8k. Has local dimming, 200hz. This one is stretching my budget…

My main uses for it would be to:
1. Stream movies (eg. prime videos/youtube) and blurays
2. PS4 pro (maybe a small portion of PC gaming occasionally)

At the moment I'm leaning towards 70S5 as it seems the cheapest but still have Dolby Vision that other models lack, while still at a decent 70". 2nd preference is 65Q7 as it has local dimming although I've a review on JB or harvey norman that it has really bad smearing in dark scenes.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Depends on your use case. If you watch a lot of movies in the dark, then yes, local dimming is valuable and I'd go with one of the Q8 models, which are actually really good (better than the Samsung Q60T IMO).

If you're mostly watching TV in the afternoon in daylight or use the TV to play some sport in the background to entertain kids/guests, then I'd go with the bigger S8, which is still a decent TV (I have a 55S8 in my bedroom), but the picture quality isn't going to be the same as the Q8 in terms of contrast, colours, black levels…etc.

I wouldn't worry about features like 200 Hz, because it's not true 200 Hz anyway (really just interpolation), and I've always found that this ends up looking worse for most content.

At this stage, I wouldn't go with an S5 or Q7 as they're outdated models by this stage. Stretch for the S8 or Q8 instead.

    • S and Q models are the current generation. The Q7 has only been in Australia since October. You might be thinking of the R5/R7.

    • Thanks @P1 ama, but like what @dazweeja said I thought S and Q are 2020 models (at least on Hisense/JB website). It just puzzles me how S5 has Dolby Vision where as Q7 or S8 dont if it's a lower end model…very confusing

We sort of had the same choices

We picked up a 65Q7 for $1158 from GG which is pretty close to the $995 current price of the S8 but I get a better panel. From what I can tell the Q8 has the better built in sound and better refresh rate but at $1795 it was at the limit of price justification I ended up getting a Hisense sound bar with the Q7 at slightly cheaper price. They are also allegedly discounted as well.

I'm not sure where "not a bot" got the $1999 price for the SX from (below). The current JB price for the 65SX is $3295

    • Great information - Thanks!

Don't get one without local dimming. Seriously, once you're used to it you notice it gone on other TVs. Also check that the models you narrowed down with local dimming have the same amount of lights in them, one might have even more local dimming. You do get a bit of flaring around bright objects in a dark, like a candle or a tiny moon in a dark sky. But it's better than your whole TV flaring, just think of the flares like an in-lens effect

    • Thanks mate, but I've read that the local dimming could cause smearing in dark scenes so not sure….

I think the halo smear around tiny bright objects is fine. It's not like these are OLED or mini LED TVs where they can make just one pixel super bright. But I don't see how a TV can get around it without local dimming, surely the halo is better than not being able to brighten up the candle or moon individually at all? And when you get a scene where a barn door is opened to a bright outside it's like the TV is shining a torch in your face, it's actually better than OLED ever could be in situations like that in terms of bright light in certain parts of the screen with HDR.

        • mmm…sounds like maybe Q7 is the go then given my budget…i guess only losing 5" compared to the 70S5 but get local dimming which i guess it might be worth it by the sounds of things

you can get the 65SX for 1999 in a couple days from JB, it looks like an OLED and comes with a wireless subwoofer. It's their flagship tv and replaces last years OLED model from Hisense.

    • thanks mate, but I've read the dual cell tech arent really gonna fly…due to a few fundamental issues with them.
If you're interested you can google "dual layer LCD" on the HDTVTest youtube channel…

      • So I watched his video and it's interesting but the major problem according to him is power consumption because the backlight needs to light up 2 LCDs, but 2k for an OLED competitor that draws even 1.5x the power is kind of a bargain imo.

The 65SX has the same wattage as the Q8. Dual cell TVs aren't in the US/Europe yet, only China and Australia. So any American reviewers are largely guessing.

From looking at TVs I really couldn't tell a difference between the Q7/Q8, but the SX looked fantastic for not that much more.

    How does a Samsung TU8000 compare to a Hisense Series 8 (2020)?

  • Came to post and found this thread- very helpful thanks

    • glad to hear it helped someone out too :)
Which model did you end up getting?

      • I am upgrading to get a better picture, so quality was important
I nearly went the Q7 because it is 2/3 price and the quality will be an upgrade
But I couldn't see either in store and the local guy convinced me to go the newer Q8
I am regional and was happy to pay my local betta $1795
Don't have it yet so can't report but it will be an upgrade over my current Aldi quality for sure

nice one! :) Yea I'm sure it'd be an upgrade from the aldi one lol (or I'd hope ;) )

        • Have you got your TV yet? How is it? I'm interested in the 65Q8 as well.
