Bought a RTX 3080 and Got Scammed through Gumtree via PAYID. - Any Chance of Getting Money Back?

Hi I decided to buy a RTX 3080 Strix off Gumtree but the seller was located in a different city. These cards are very rare and he was selling it for a good price so I decided to go ahead with it.

I stupidly accepted that he didn't do PayPal and paid via PAYID. It's been 3 days since the seller has been ignoring me. The payment has confirmed.

Is there anything I can do about it to even have the slightest chance of getting my money back?

Thank you.

OP, can't help you, but I am amazed at the number of people on this forum that get burnt by this type of scam on Gumtree!

burnt by this type of scam on Gumtree!

Oldest scam in the GT book.
It proves the KISS principle. Keep the scam simple, people will still fall for it.

"I have accidentally paid the wrong person because I made a mistake inputting their PayID. What do I do?
Speak to your financial institution and they can help you take the necessary steps to recover the funds."

That's from the PAYID FAQ. Try contacting your bank.

      From the PayID FAQ.

I think I have made a payment to a PayID that has been used for fraudulent purposes. Who do I tell?

If you have made a payment to a PayID that you later suspect may have been a scam, you should report this to the police and contact your financial institution.

Or… I dunno… tell a bunch of random people on the internet who have no ability to recover your money.

I stupidly accepted that he didn't do Paypal and paid via PAYID.

Even paying with Paypal doesn't guarantee protection.

    • +1

It's about increasing your chances, especially if funded with a CC.
There's a reason why experienced sellers do not like Paypal.

      • +2

Maybe also the fact that a genuine seller can get effed over by a scamming buyer if buyer protections leans on the Buyers side.

I buy a product, pay with PayPal, & claim its faulty or got a block of wood instead of a graphics card, etc etc when in fact its all good. I'm sure some would pull this stunt.

ebay or cash in hand. Nothing else.

  • +9

How many times does it get posted here that Gumtree transactions should be cash only

    • PayID is fine (imo better since you can't be given counterfeit cash) as long as it's during an in-person sale.
Paying in a cash-like method (PayID, money transfer, cheque, cash in mail, etc) to a remote seller and expecting them to send you the item after they've been paid is very risky.

I've sold a few items to remote sellers on Gumtree or FB Marketplace and accepted PayID but for everyone's sanity I advise against it.

CASH IN HAND OR YOU DESERVE TO GET SCAMMED!

So which option did you choose?

    • Different city? Fly to the seller, Take chances with Corvid are better than an honest seller. What a world we live in.

  • Yes, what you can do is learn from this, as your greed got the better of you and you can put it down as an expensive lesson.

Someone scammed on Gumtree, I find that hard to believe /s

They even say on their website.

Only trade with sellers who you can meet in person and never send or wire money.

A fool and his money are soon parted, as the saying goes.

  • Sad to hear

  • reading where aust gov is implementing fines etc for troll posts on social and other media wonder how OzBargain will fare?

    • +2

I'm starting a GoFundMe now to cover my fines

  • Have you spoken with your bank and asked them to do a 'best endeavours' recovery?

  • remember, gumtree = pay by cash

  • +1

why would you do something so dumb?

These people should be able to be traced.
The govt are talking about kicking your door down if you hurt someone's feelings, so why are they not concerned about these scammers that hurt much more than just feelings?

    • I agree; while it’s true people need to be wise and savvy and take precautions, this can’t be the end of it all. Too many websites and games and other things facilitate trading and absolve themselves of responsibility.

Of course there's something you can do.

Call your bank and report the fraud and do a charge back.

    Isn't that obvious?

    • It was a bank transfer, not a credit card charge.

      • -4

        And?
You think you're the first person in the world that wanted to reverse a transfer?

        • -4

Nice of you to downvote my comment because you don't like the tone.

I'm not your friend and I actually gave you proper advice.

I literally called Commbank today because I made a transfer to someone and typed in the wrong account number. They were more than helpful.

Like I've said twice before, I'll say it again:
Call your bloody bank and tell them this guy ripped you off (or you typed in the wrong number or whatever you want to) and get them to reverse it. They will do it.

          • @hotpants: I didn't downvote you (I've only just now seen your responses) and I'm not the original poster of this topic with the problem.

However, you referred to reporting fraud and requesting charge back; they are credit card terms. Reversing a transfer is different, and is a process they can go down but it also depends on the person on the other end aiding.

@davidmwilliams: Mate, this is just wrong.
1)l - if you've paid for something and the person hasn't sent you the goods, that's considered fraud.
Literally just look it up. noun: wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.

              2) What's in a name? When I spoke to my bank I literally used the term 'charge bank' and they knew what I wanted to do and did it.

You can keep discussing it here or just call your bank.

              Bye.

              • @hotpants: @hotpants, as before, I am not the original poster. Why are you continually telling me to call the bank? I did not make this topic.

  • Similar story, I once sold a camera lens on gumtree for $1300, I specified cash. The buyer offered to meet and only then did he say he was not carrying cash, and would payid. I was naïve/dumb at the time and accepted out of anxiety and not knowing what else to do. For some reason his payid client said it went through (commbank payid transferring to beemit), but I did not receive it 'instantly' on mine. I gave him the lens anyway, and nervously waited 3-4 days until the money reached my account. I will never accept payid for gumtree transactions again, and having experience now, I would not hesistate to turn the buyer away. Cash only.

    • So did you get the money at the end or not?

      • +1

Probably not. Many banks will hold PayID purchases over a certain amount. I think CBA might do it for over $1000?
You have until the next business day around 10 AM to cancel it.

I'm confused about the Beem It bit though. Why use PayID with Beem It when you can just use Beem It directly via the credit card network (Mastercard/Visa)?

      • until the money reached my account

        Yes.

  • +1

Under epayments code, your bank is obliged to help. Same with NPP (payid etc) - call them and report the transaction as fraud. Make a polic report as well and forward to your bank.

Timing is key here - the more you wait, the more chance is that the funds are removed from the other account. If the money is available in the ‘to’ account, your bank can help freeze it in a day or two.

My apologies - I saw this post a few days ago and wanted to respond above. Completely missed it :(

  • Your own fault mate sorry pay id is not secure and they could simply just shut down that account and there's no way to get any money back….

  • very rare and he was selling it for a good price

If it's too good to be true…

  • It's gumtree, always deal in cash and in person at a public place such as a police station.
