    • I’m planning to get this to do the hard lifting of transcoding as my Gen8 is struggling with two or more streams. My only problem is networking which I’m bad at. The gen8 has two Ethernet port, should I daisy chain it so it goes switch > gen8 > gigabyte nuc? Or connect them both to the switch?

      • Get this and stick 5gbps networking on the thing

      • +2

No. You can't Daisy chain networking like that without some trickery on the gen8 to bridge the connections or setup routing. Just plug both directly into your network switch like any other device.

        • Thanks, as I suspect

        • Did I say literally anything about daisy chaining? WTF?

Stick a 5gbps network adapter on it and use it like a normal network adapter

EDIT: Oh, my bad, read the comment you were replying to. Yeah, no need for daisy chaining, just use a 5gbps network adapter if you want to. Although 2x 1gbps is also perfectly sufficient.

  • Would this be good use for a conferencing system for a meeting room connected to a TV and Logitech webcam and a microphone?

I have the i5 version of this NUC, which I bought for the two HDMI outputs to run one on my TV and the other on a monitor.

Be aware that these NUCs have a whiny and revvy little fan in them that can be quite annoying without countermeasures such as undervolting, passive mode cooling and balanced or power saver power profiles. I haven't found a Windows 10 program yet that will detect, let alone control the fan speed, so you can't even manually set a fan speed.

Great deal though. I paid $509 for the i5 and it came with a free Gigabyte 256GB SSD, but this is an even better deal than that.

  • Heads up that they have just released a new AMD Ryzen Brix (4000 series Ryzen). Haven't seen any yet so don't know if they're available but food for thought.

    • Plex doesn’t support amd hardware transcoding I thought? The only reason to get this is for quick sync

  • Bought two of the $520 bundle to add to my Proxmox cluster. Excellent.

  • Can I run pfsense on this and use it as a router and a 24/7 device to run surveillance cameras?

    • pfSense would be hard because it only has a single NIC. Without PCIe, it's hard to get an additional NIC in one of these things. Try getting a dedicated pfSense box on AliExpress, comes in around $300 or so with storage and RAM and will usually have a 4-port Intel NIC onboard.

  • how are you connecting storage for the plex server?

    • Usually network share, some are connecting via USB, perhaps. You could also probably put a 4TB 2.5" drive in here that would house all of your media too if that's your jam.

      • I have about 16TB of media….
I bought a case which can house 12x 3.5" HDD so that I can keep adding to it.

I thought maybe you might have another way

  • Mine just arrived

    • Picked mine up yesterday. It was available for pickup that afternoon after i ordered in the morning. First impressions are very good, i really like it. Just make sure you don't mess around in bios too much, the cmos is a bit annoying to reset lol. Only tried it with Ubuntu so far but it took the OS fine and was a breeze to set up.

      • Im lazy and didn't want to drive in (about a 40 min drive) so went for delivery.

Im using windows 10, setting Plex/Sonarr/Radarr/nzb360 up now.

        • haha fair call, 20mins for me. I am still learning linux so will take a while before I am up and running. Plan to run everything in docker containers though and I have my script ready so shouldn't be too bad. Enjoy!

          • @drinkin-beer: I still have no idea what the advantage of docker containers for a plex server is tbh, windows and plex standard setup has always worked perfect without issues.

Hey am i missing a driver or is the wifi on this thing quite slow? maxing out at about 100mbps while ethernet hitting 500+ mbps on speedtest.net im running wired but noticed it while i was using wifi setting it up.

            • @Axelstrife: It's just trying to keep things running with as lower resources as possible is all. For Linux users docker makes installing everything you need one simple command and you're up and running on a new machine with a different distro. This is irrelevant for windows users but if you want to cut back on the unnecessary resources windows uses this is the best way.

Actually now that you mention it, I think there is missing wifi drivers. When installing Debian it picked up that there were some missing network drivers. It alsed me if I had them on a USB and to insert it if I did. I didn't do it didn't install them but pretty sure it's missing some.

    Do these come with OS?

Also, are there SFF versions that might fit a 3.5" drive?

  • Since this deal has the attention of plex experts, cananyone recommend a bloat free windows OS to use with plex server? Planning to use it with sonarr, radarr and sabnzb. Also an alternative to teamviewer to remote in and troubleshoot when required? I accidentally used teamviewer at work and now it’s marked as a trial commercial license

    • +1

If you want bloat free, best to learn Linux and docker and do it that way. It will also be much more stable. If you do not wish to do this then you are stuck with windows. As for team viewer, it's probably the best for the job. Just be careful not to make the same mistake again. Alternatively you can use vnc but to access remotely you may need to set up a vpn, not sure if that will work either I have never done it.

Received my unit today but no RAM. I ordered the i5 10th Gen + 16GB RAM + 480GB SSD package…

Man… That's really shitty… Give mwave a call and see what they can do for you.

To anyone who bought this, does yours have a drive cage attached to the bottom panel where the 2.5” drive is supposed to go? That’s what the instructions say but mine doesn’t have a cage.

    • +1

Nope no drive cage. Was pretty sure it just sits in the bottom with the adhesive padding that is attached to the base plate.

      • Thanks for the reply. I peeled the plastic off that pad and felt it and it didn't feel adhesive at all to me so it wasn't clear to me what purpose that served.

Some context: I was already very suspicious of the unit because I noticed dirty marks on the box underneath the plastic seal and also when I opened it I noticed there were already little scratches and a dent on the exterior case. Then I read in the instructions how there's supposed to be a cage and saw that dodgy looking pad in it's place. There's also the fact that included is a set of 4 screws that fit where the cage would go.

I don't see how you could mount it on the back of a monitor with that VESA plate as they advertise and expect the drive to stay in place with that dinky pad. I'm not very impressed.

        • +1

I tried to find a video of the unit being opened so I could compare it to mine but the only one I could find of an identical unit was in German. The video is "Der PERFEKTE ZWEIT PC? DIESER PC ist KLEINER als meine HAND! GIGABYTE BRIX S im Test". The video goes for over 10 minutes but of course when he pulls off the base plate he doesn't show the side where the drive mounts.

Every single other video I could find of similar (but not identical) units, there was a drive cage.

          • @eapchay ateskay: Yeah the advesive pad is not very sticky. But mine seemed slightly sticky. Mine did not come with a drive cage and was definitely factory sealed, was very clean. I suppose another option is to secure the 2.5 inch drives down with some strong double sided tape. I must admit, when I opened mine up I wondered why it didn't look easy to mount a 2.5 inch drive in there. I just have an nvme in mine, very happy with it though.

        • There's also the fact that included is a set of 4 screws that fit where the cage would go.

The GB-BRi5H-10210(E) support page PDF instructions indicate those four screws hold the 2.5" drive to the inside of the bottom panel, no cage.

  • Did anyone who bought a Brix S find the 'HDD Cage' mentioned in the Quick Start Guide (in 13 different languages)?
The guide says it's already screwed to the bottom of the case and needs to be unscrewed and flipped over to hold the 2.5" HDD.
Sounds reasonable except my unit doesn't have an HDD cage.
I've found pics of it online https://www.gigabyte.com/Mini-PcBarebone/GB-BKi7HT2-7500-rev…

I found some tiny screws and used them to screw the HDD directly to the base plate.
Is that the thing to do?

    • it doesn't have a cage. you need to screw it to the base plate as @Thrift mentioned above.

  • How did everyone go with setting up hardware transcoding in Plex with this bad boy? I'm in the final stages of setting mine up with unraid but can't get the hw transcoding to work as of yet. Made some headway though, can see the igpu in /dev/dri which I couldn't before.
